Sony Developing Video Walkman

Even with the iPod maintaining, at last count, a 243% share on the market, Sony’s not giving up on their Walkman line of MP3 players. Oh no, they’re actually ramping up efforts to make a Walkman that plays video.

Their Senior Vice President said they were making a product that handles images, which by any logical assessment means that player will do video as well as images. We’re guessing “images” probably means “moving images”, and the translation from Japanese was just wonky.

No other details about the Video Walkman has been released, but if they’re to have any significant impact on the market, the video players will either have to be backed up by a video store, or handle lots of codecs – DivX and XviD for example – to make them more friendly to movie downloaders.
