Created by former PayPal employees Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim in 2005, YouTube is a video-sharing website that allows users to upload, view and share videos. The company uses Adobe Flash Video and HTML5 technology to display a wide variety of user-generated and corporate media video content.

Funded primarily by an $11.5 million investment by Sequoia Capital, YouTube had more than 65,000 new videos uploaded and 100 million video views per day by July 2006.

In November 2006, Google bought YouTube, LLC for $1.65 billion and began operating YouTube as a Google subsidiary. As of September 2012, YouTube was banned in China, Iran, Pakistan, and Turkmenistan.
