Yik Yak is an anonymous social media app for iOS and Android. Developed by Tyler Droll and Brooks Buffington and launched in 2013, Yik Yak allows users to anonymously create and view “yaks” within a 10-mile radius. Unlike other anonymous sharing apps such as PostSecret and Whisper, Yik Yak is intended for sharing primarily among people in close proximity to other users. Users can contribute to the content by writing, responding and up- or down-voting “yaks.” The app is focused on serving college campuses as their go-to source for news and gossip.
In April 2014, Yik Yak secured $1.5 million in funding; later in June 2014, it secured an additional $10 million from other investors. Yik Yak, like similar apps, has been used for bullying and harassment; as a result, many schools and school districts have taken action to ban the app. In December 2014, Yik Yak closed a $61 million series B round of funding.
