Secret is an iOS and Android app that allows users to share messages anonymously within their circle of friends, friends of friends, and publicly. It was founded by David Byttow, the former technical lead for Square Wallet, and Chrys Bader-Wechseler, a former Google product manager at Google.
Released in January 2014, the app added privacy controls in February, including subscribe and unsubscribe options, post flagging and unlinking. In May 2014, Secret launched on Android and became available internationally.
Technology commentators have linked Secret with a growing trend in anonymous and quasi-anonymous sharing, a pushback against Facebook’s attempt to encourage the use of real names through the Internet.
