Reed Hastings is an American entrepreneur and education philanthropist. He is best known as the co-founder and CEO of Netflix, which he founded with Marc Randolph in 1997.
Prior to founding Netflix, Hastings worked at Adaptive Technology, leaving to found his first company, Pure Software, which produced products to troubleshoot software. In 1996, Pure Software merged with Atria Software to create Pure Atria, which was acquired in 1997 by Rational Software. Hastings was appointed CTO of the combined companies, though he left soon after the acquisition.
Hastings serves on the boards of Facebook and numerous nonprofit organizations, and in 2001, he was appointed president of the State Board of Education. He holds a B.S. in mathematics from Bowdoin College and an M.S. in computer science from Stanford University.
