Launched in April 2009, Kickstarter is a crowdfunding platform founded by Perry Chen, Yancey Strickler and Charles Adler. It is one of a number of similar sites that projects can use to collect money from the public, circumventing traditional avenues of investment. Project creators choose a deadline and minimum funding goal; if the goal isn’t met by the deadline, no funds are collected. Individuals who back Kickstarter projects are offered rewards and special experiences in exchange for their pledges. Though Kickstarter claims no ownership over the projects, the platform does take 5 percent of the funds raised.
