Craigslist

Craigslist

Craigslist, founded by Craig Newmark in 1995, is a classified advertisement website with sections devoted to jobs, housing, personals, items wanted, services, community, gigs, resumes, and discussion forums.

It began as an email distribution list featuring local events in the San Francisco Bay Area before becoming a web-based service and expanding to other U.S. cities. In January 2000, Jim Buckmaster joined Craigslist as lead programmer and chief technology officer, and in November 2000, he was promoted to chief executive officer.

eBay purchased a 25 percent stake in the company in August 2004, though this has had no substantive effect on the nature of the website. In August 2004, Craigslist also began charging $25 to post job openings.

As of 2007, Craigslist had over 80 million new classified advertisements each month, making it the leading classifieds service in any medium. By 2012, over 700 cities and 70 countries had Craigslist sites.
