Founded in 2012, Aereo was a technology company that allowed subscribers to view live- and time-shifted streams of television on Internet-connected devices. Aereo operated by leasing users an individual remote antenna and allowing subscribers to view live broadcast television and record broadcasts for later viewing.
In June 2014, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against Aereo in a case brought by several broadcast networks. The Court found that Aereo infringed upon the rights of copyright holders. As a result, Aereo announced in June 2014 that it would suspend its services while consulting with the Court about how to proceed. Aereo filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in November 2014.
