Apparently it’s not a matter of “if” Microsoft will bring the Xbox, in some capacity, to the wonderful world of mobile entertainment, but “when.” So says Corporate Vice-President Shane Kim, at least; if you can’t trust Mr. Kim, then who can you trust? Here’s the money quote from Mr. Kim, swiped from an interview with Kikizo: For us, it’s a matter of focusing on “when,” because if we chased after a mobile or handheld opportunity, we would not have the resources and ability to do things like… Project Natal. So we’ve chosen to focus on the living room experience from a hardware standpoint, if you will, but we’re building a service in Live that will… will extend to other platforms. No question about it. The key to all of this, apparently, is Xbox Live. Microsoft sees the service as “connective tissue,” sustaining life between your Xbox 360 and your TV by way of Twitter and Facebook integration, Netflix streaming, and so on. Nowhere does Kim explain what, exactly, Microsoft has in mind. Will it go the “traditional” route of releasing its own portable system? I can’t see that doing too well on its own: why is someone, in 2009, going to carry around a cellphone that doubles as a mobile computer and a dedicated video game machine? Perhaps a Zune phone, one so powerful that it’s able to play video games with ease? (Just look at this video of Resident Evil 4 running on the iPhone and tell me that doesn’t look playable, if not great.) It’d give the Zune brand a much needed shot in the arm, that’s for sure. I can’t imagine too many Xbox Live Arcade games giving a modern cellphone too much trouble. Of course, that’s merely speculation that I just came up with; it has no bearing on reality. I like to think out loud. It makes the day go by faster. But, now you know: Microsoft wants to bring Xbox into your mobile world. How it does that, when it does that, who knows. → Read More
Ben Heckendorn is no doubt one of the greatest computer modders of our time. Doug just interviewed him and we have featured his work numerous times on CrunchGear. He’s back with yet another incarnation of a portable Xbox. Microsoft has just announced that some new features are coming the Xbox 360 at E3. Facebook and Last.fm integration into the Xbox Live dashboard are two of them. The game Metal Gear Solid is another. But the one they seem to be touting the most right now? Twitter!
Yes, it seems the software giant, who has made some nice moves in the gaming space has just as big of an obsession with Twitter as everyone else. You will apparently be able to see tweets and post new tweets from the console starting soon. → Read More
Microsoft just announced sales of Xbox 360 consoles have passed the 30 million mark globally, up 28 percent over last year, which it claims is the highest percentage growth in hardware sales of any console so far in 2009. In addition, the Xbox LIVE community has grown to over 20 million users, coming from 26 countries.
And these users spend money, too. In a press release touting the sales numbers, Microsoft claims U.S. consumers alone have spent $14.5 billion across all categories on Xbox 360 at retail, and consumers worldwide have downloaded close to 1 billion pieces of gaming and entertainment content from Xbox LIVE Marketplace to date. → Read More

Last week Fudzilla was reporting that Microsoft could be phasing out the Xbox 360 Elite in select markets while making it a limited edition model in NA and Europe. It all boils down to the current state of the economy. And it wouldn’t hurt the sales of special edition Elite consoles like the Resident Evil 5 bundle if the black Elites weren’t so abundant. → Read More

Not for nothing, but we did a post a few weeks back about how more and more of today’s professionals are from the video game generation. That is, the man in the suit behind the desk on Wall Street (what’s left of it) or in Foggy Bottom spent his formative years in front of an NES (or whatever), and can take some of the skills he learned there and apply it to the real world. Case in point, P.W. Singer, a Senior Fellow over at the Brookings Institute, who, in his new book Wired for War: The Robotics Revolution and Conflict in the 21st Century, tells the story of a high school dropout who later became a drone pilot, using his skill he accrued while playing Xbox. How about that! → Read More
Netflix streaming launched just a few months ago and already the sevice has streamed 1.5 billion minutes of TV shows and movies. The company stated that over 1 million Xbox’s have connected up with the service to stream content so far. There isn’t an official number of how many Xbox owners subscribed to the service exclusively for the streaming service, but I know of at least one: me. Only time will tell if the service already peaked or if there is still more growing room. → Read More

Kudos to Microsoft, which has tricked more people into buying the Xbox 360 then it did the original Xbox. Redmond has sold—well, is projected to sell through the end of this month—some 25 million Xbox 360s. It took the original Xbox, which launched in late 2001, five years to reach that number. Meanwhile, the plucky little 360 will hit that number a mere three years after its own late 2005 launch. What I’d like to know: how many of these 25 million Xbox 360s are re-purchases as a result of the red ring of death? Like I said before, if my current Xbox 360 dies there’s no chance in hell I’d get another one. I’ll move exclusively to emulators—the older games are better anyway—and WoW. → Read More
