Adobe Flash 10.1 holds out for Windows Phone 7, 6.5 devices can haz upgrade to WP7?

Just the other day, hearts were broken all over the world when Microsoft said that current Windows Mobile 6.5 devices won’t be able to upgrade to Windows Phone 7. The good news is that might not entirely be true as Microsoft said on Twitter that it’s entirely up to hardware manufacturers. Way to confuse us! Another area where WinMo 6.5 gets no love? Adobe Flash 10.1. → Read More

Windows Phone 7 devices will come in three flavors

Microsoft is doing a complete 180 and reinventing the way it handles its mobile presence. When the iPhone was first announced, Steve Ballmer quipped that Windows Mobile was on hundreds of devices all over the world while the iPhone was one operating system on one handset on one carrier. It looks like he and the gang are thinking differently these days. → Read More

Out with the old, in with the new: Windows Mobile 6.5 gets a name change

If you thought that Windows Mobile 6 would fade into oblivion because Windows Phone 7 is coming soon, think again. Not only will the OS stick around for a while longer, but it’s getting a name change, too: Windows Phone Classic. Of course, we all knew this was going to happen, so no surprises here, right? → Read More

T-Mobile gives an HTC HD2 reminder, now with more fun!

Last week, T-Mobile teased us all with a little jab on Twitter about the HTC HD2 that it will be shipping soon. It was exciting and, to be frank, it made me a little antsy. As promised, T-Mobile announced new features for the HD2 at Mobile World Congress today and I’ve gotta say, it isn’t all that thrilling. → Read More

Microsoft to introduce Zune Phone with Windows Mobile 7 at MWC

If there is one rumor that tends to come and go and agonizes Windows Mobile fans, it’s the one about a Zune phone. Although it’s not officially confirmed, Gizmodo has it on good word that Microsoft will be introducing a Zune phone at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this year. More specifically, it will be a Windows Mobile 7 phone with Zune features and capabilities, so it’s not a Zune phone, per se. → Read More

Juniper Systems rugged handheld is rugged

Ruggedized computers are typically pretty ugly, and the Juniper Systems handheld is no exception. Designed to withstand extreme temperatures, and drops onto concrete from a height of up to 5ft without damage, it’d be the ideal thing for the construction site or roadworks project. → Read More

Tekken 3 on the HTC HD2

So there’s actually two things to tell you about here; for one thing, you can play Tekken 3 on your HTC HD2 phone. That’s cool and all, but the big story is the emulator used to play it. The emulator, named FPSECE, not only supports the Playstation 1, but the touchscreen as well. → Read More

Microsoft threatens 30 million WinMo 6.5 devices by 2010

Like it or not, Windows Mobile is a predominant mobile OS. It rules the roost, along with Symbian, and although Android will shortly beat its butt – I’d expect it to reach parity in about 2012 – we’re still going to have to live with up to 30 million WinMo 6.5 devices by the end of the year. → Read More

It's coming: WinMo update 6.5 shows up for the XPERIA X1

Windows mobile has had a hard time of it of late, what with the Blackberry and iPhone being so popular. And frankly, the current version of the mobile OS, sucks. There’s good news on the horizon however, because the latest release version 6.5 is coming. → Read More

HTC WinMo phones could allow hackers to infect you via Bluetooth

While this will never happen to you ever, if you own an HTC running WinMo 6 or 6.1 you could get hacked if you accept Bluetooth connections from an untrusted source. Also if you accept Bluetooth connections from an untrusted source you deserve to be hacked. The exploit uses the Bluetooth OBEX FTP service to crack into your filesystem and traverse directories, allowing your copy of BubbleBreaker fall into the wrong hands. → Read More

Video: Shop! Windows! Phone! Your Windows phone!

WinMo 6.5′s Marketplace, basically a Microsoft App Store, is getting lots of ink this week at CTIA. 1800PocketPC has some interesting news including the addition of a 24-hour “return period,” carrier-based billing, and carrier specific stores. → Read More

Marketplace icon present within latest WinMo 6.5 screenshots

Well, look at that: A marketplace icon. There have been rumors circulating that Microsoft would unveil a Windows Mobile application marketplace sometime soon and even possibly at MWC next week, but these screenshots are the first evidence of its existence. We’ll hold off on calling the Marketplace official or confirmed, but there it is. The icon is sitting smack dab in the center of the latest WinMo leaked pics that also display a much cleaner interface overall. More pics after the jump. You should like what you see. → Read More

Yet more WinMo 6.5 screenshots

It is probably safe to say that this is what Windows Mobile 6.5 will look like with this many screen shots. No one can deny the Zune-ish feel to ‘em either. Mobile World Congress starts next week and purhaps Microsoft is reading the upcoming OS for a preview or soft launch. Previously we learned that 6.5 will hit manufacturers in April with the devices hitting consumer’s hands sometime in September. If these screenshots are any indication though, September cannot come soon enough. → Read More

Windows Mobile 6.5 coming soon, WinMo 7 later this year

We have already seen what 6.5 screenshots of the next WinMo refresh, but now we have a roadmap of the mobile OS. It seems that manufacturers will get the 6.5 update in April and those devices should hit consumer’s hands the following September. WinMo 7, however, should be released to manufacturers in November followed by devices in April 2010. Hopefully the upcoming release of 6.5 is special enough to keep our attention cause the mobile platform is dying and we can only imagine what the open source Android will evolve into a year from now; not to mention Palm’s webOS. → Read More

HP has a new WinMo 6.1 Touchscreen handset in the works – return of the Oak?

Back in January, word got out of a new WinMo 6.1 touchscreen handset floating around the Hewlett Packard labs. Called the Oak and tentatively set for a September launch on Vodafone, it had a number pad on its face and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard packed away underneath. Unfortunately, all’s been mum on the matter since the initial leak. September came and went, and the Oak didn’t make an appearance. Turns out it may have just required a bit more time on the drawing boards. The rumor mill is churning out talk of a new HP-made WinMo 6.1 device for launch sometime in the next two months. European launch? Check. Touchscreen and keypad? Check. While no one has outright stated it’s the Oak (and no one’s outright saying it has QWERTY, either), we’d hope so. The Oak would have been one of HP’s more sightly handsets, so it’d be a shame to see it kicked under the rug. → Read More

WinMo 7 delayed until the second half of next year?

Imagine today, but a year from now. You might still be waiting for the next version of Windows Mobile. Apparently hardware vendors had been expecting the final version to arrive “by early next year” but were recently told that it wouldn’t be ready until the second half on next year, according to CNET. In other news, guess what’s white hot right now? Operating systems for mobile phones. Microsoft stands to lose a lot of market share by sitting on WinMo 6 for another year. Apparently we’re to see a big update to the Internet Explorer mobile browser this year still that’ll allow it to harness the IE6 rendering engine, which means true Ajax and Flash support. That’s a step in the right direction, but I betcha every other mobile browser is about to add the same functionality, and some might even beat Microsoft to the punch. → Read More
