Wiimbledon 2009 has come and gone and I’m happy to report that it was a great success! We had 98 tournament participants and everything went off without a hitch. With the help of generous eBayers, tournament attendees and Barcade, we’ve raised somewhere in the vicinity of $5,000 for the Child’s Play Charity. If you’re unable to make the event in Brooklyn then you can either donate directly to Child’s Play via their Paypal account (please add a note to your donation referencing Wiimbledon and CrunchGear) or bid on items that CrunchGear has allocated for Wiimbledon on this page. (It’s a little ghetto because it’s my personal eBay page, but I’ve linked all auction pages to the Child’s Play Charity and they’re getting all the proceeds). Check out all the items now. We’ll be adding to it over the next day so keep checking back.

Here’s a quick update on this year’s Wiimbledon, folks. If you’re unable to make the event in Brooklyn on June 27th and you still want to help CrunchGear raise money for Child’s Play then donate your used gadgets to Gazelle. We’ve set up a “Gazelle for Goods” page and we’re hoping to raise $2500 for Penny Arcade’s charity, Child’s Play. Go dig into your desk drawers and find some old gadgets to donate! Don’t forget to sign up at Eventbrite if you want to play in the tournament and remember, it doesn’t cost anything to attend.

Wiimbledon Gazelle

What Steve Bryant and Lane Buschel started two years ago in Brooklyn has now become something more than just a Wii tennis tournament. I went last year and had an incredibly fun time watching folks in all manner of costume playing a little Wii, drinking a lot of beer and having a generally fun time. But we’re changing that around a little bit this year to include a fundraiser that will hopefully raise the single largest sum of money for Child’s Play ever.

To help raise money for all the sick kids out there we’ve asked hundreds of tech companies to pitch in products for giveaways and for an auction that will start in the coming weeks ahead of Wiimbledon. We already have a ton of sweet doodads for the auction, but we’re not revealing everything just yet. We still have to lock down a few more sponsors and goodies for tournament participants, but we’ll make a big reveal very, very soon.

So in the mean time mark your calendars for June 27th and be sure you’re at Barcade in Brooklyn. Sign ups for Wiimbledon are now open with a $3.99 entry fee (to play, it’s free to attend). If you’re not in NY you can always donate to the cause as well, but more on that a little later.

Look here, New Yorkers, June 7th in Brooklyn at Barcade marks the second coming of Wiimbledon. Details are far and few between at the moment, but I just wanted to give you the heads up. An open bar will be sponsored by Brooklyn Brewery and Prince is providing a gaggle of prizes along with Brunswick. Registration will open up a week prior, June 2, and will be online with 128 spots. More details as the date gets closer. You’ve been warned.
