File this away in your “Meh” folder if you like but Verizon Wireless is offering 50MB of EVDO data for $39.99 a month. That might work for some people, but I’d think it’d be pretty easy to blast through 50MB and, according to MobileBurn.com, going over will cost a cool 99 cents per megabyte. If you’ve got no better uses for $40 and just need to hop online in a few remote locations every month, maybe this would be a good option for you versus VZW’s $59.99 5GB plan. “We are very pleased with our auction results. Specifically, we were successful in achieving the spectrum depth we need to continue to grow our business and data revenues, to preserve our reputation as the nation’s most reliable wireless network, and to continue to lead in data services and help us satisfy the next wave of services and consumer electronics devices. “The bids we won include a nationwide spectrum footprint covering 298M Pops, plus 102 licenses for individual markets covering 171M Pops. “In compliance with the FCC’s anti-collusion quiet period rules, Verizon Wireless cannot comment further until that period ends.” → Read More
Looks like Verizon Wireless was the high bidder in the C-block with $4.74 billion. That gives them control over the airspace being left by television broadcasters who are moving from analog to digital. AT&T appears to have won 227 licenses from the B-block. Details on this to come as we get them. FCC → Read More
[photopress:vx9700.jpg,full,center] Somewhere underneath the giant PHONE ARENA watermark is the latest LG phone destined for your local Verizon Wireless store, the LG VX9700. It’s supposed to be VZW’s Prada-less Prada, complete with fancy touchscreen and bubbly UI. It’s supposed to be available by the end of the month, but last-minute delays may push it back into April or May. Y’all can look forward (?) to a 3.2-megapixel camera (for taking pictures!), microSDHC, T9, etc. etc. It’s all about the touchscreen, obviously. Honestly, I liked the look of the Prada more than the iPhone, but now I’m set on either an Android-based phone or iPhone v2. I’m really liking the idea of an OSS cellphone. Update 4 with picture: LG VX9700 is Verizon’s PRADA-like phone [Phone Arena] → Read More
[photopress:somevzwphone.jpg, full, center] Heads up for those of you on a Verizon Wireless contract. Two new LG cellphones are heading your way in the next few months, ones that will be comparable to the enV and the Chocolate. The VX9100 sorta resembles the enV, but is thinner and has a simpler two-button directional pad. Other than that, it’s not breaking any new ground&mdsh;two megapixel camera, QWERTY keyboard, etc. That’s it up there, if you can see through the Phone Arena watermark. The VX8610 is a standard slider, but one with a built-in, removable BlueTooth headset. You can almost picture the VZW commercials now: buy the VX8610 (snappy, focus group-tested name TBA) and be the coolest guy on the block. The background music for the commercial will be vaguely inspired by hip hop and young, youth-is-wasted-on-the-young 20-somethings will be seen in a park or a bowling alley or some other nonsense, high-fiving and texting each other. You know. LG VX9100 and VX8610 coming to Verizon [Phone Arena] → Read More

Phone Scoop has it that Verizon is loading up another CDMA/GSM hybrid phone. The RIZR-esque Motorola has a CDMA radio for domestic, Verizon Wireless yakking, and an unlocked GSM side for international roaming. Go to Spain, get a local SIM, pop it in, you’re golden. If you’re local, you get EV-DO, and no matter what flavor of voice you like you get a 2-Megapixel cam and microSD. No date or price yet, but look for this to be a seller at the VZN biz site. What I wouldn’t give to disable everyone’s cellphone on the 7 train here. Yeah, I could buy a cheap jamming device, but I’d prefer not to be fined several thousands of dollars just for a few minutes of peace and quiet. That’s the dilemma: do I be a champion for civility by preventing people from SHOUTING LOUDLY into their phones, but would that make me a jerk? (And this is just me talking, but why do people have to whip out their cellphones as soon as they emerge from a subway tunnel or land at an airport? Unless you’re in the CIA, odds are you can wait till you’re in a place where you’re not disturbing everyone around you.) → Read More
The Samsung Juke is a tiny, tiny phone. It’s a good phone, too. Hell, it’s a great phone. The call quality for such a small phone is impressive. If you’re looking for a great, pocketable phone that’s capable of making and receiving calls reliably, this is a great option at $99 with 2-year contract. → Read More
ZDNet has an article about how, because of the iPhone, “rivals have to generate some kind of cool factor.” And the uncoolest of them all? Verizon. The article’s author, Larry Dignan, gives three examples of Verizon’s recent shift in strategy. → Read More
Interested in knowing when the light blue LG Chocolate comes on Verizon Wireless? What about the BlackBerry Pearl 8130? Then take a look at this Joint Photographic Experts Group image, which lists the release dates for several VZW cellphones. There’s no point in rewriting a chart (that’s why it’s a chart to begin with), so soak it in. Why does VZW refer to some phones as “phones” and others as “devices”? Anyone? It’s common knowledge round these parts that Verizon probably has the best coverage, but their devices have been so-so. Oh, who am I kidding? The phones available on that network are about as atrocious as their customer service and rate plans. But their device lineup is certainly shaping up to take on the likes of T-Mobile. Well, actually, every major service provider is getting a boatload of cool phones in the coming months, so Verizon just needs to work on not being so shady, but I digress. → Read More
