Amazon-logo

Amazon is holding a press event in Los Angeles on Thursday, in which it’s likely to announce new versions of its Kindle tablets. You know, now that the Kindle Fire is all sold out. There have even been some leaks about what that product will look like, and the fact that it could be ad-supported. But the location of the press event in Santa Monica could also mean that Amazon will be making a big… → Read More

ultraviolet_logo_onwhite

UltraViolet might sound too good to be true, but the service is growing. More Blu-ray titles are featuring the digital media option and consumers are at least trying the movie industry’s alternative to, well, piracy. iSupply just announced that there are now more than 800,000 household accounts, up from 750,000 at the beginning of 2012. But so far it seems most of those accounts are just testing… → Read More

Paramount Begins Selling UltraViolet Movies Directly

brave

Just over a week ago I spoke with the head of DECE and UltraViolet about the service, its origins, and where it’s going. The conclusion seemed to be that there was great potential in the service as a value-add, if it’s handled correctly, but that much depends on the content producers. Paramount is the first studio to start offering UV movies on their own, via a dedicated site – Paramount Movies. → Read More

An Interview With DECE/UltraViolet President Mitch Singer Goes Horribly Right

header

Our readers are probably familiar in passing with UltraViolet, a new content rights management system that is supposed to unify the rights architecture on the web, allowing cross-platform sharing and authentication of movies and TV. But for such a major effort by so many device makers and content producers, very little has been heard or said about it. Probably because it’s still in its infancy… → Read More

DRM-Curious? You Can Create An UltraViolet Account Now

aaa9

You may remember the “one DRM to rule them all” we heard about last year, UltraViolet. It’s essentially a DRM scheme that all the heavy hitters are getting behind, from device makers to content creators to distributors. Everyone, that is, except for one 800-pound media gorilla: Apple.

The last we heard of it was over a year ago, with nary a peep since then except the odd mention here or there. → Read More

With DECE's UltraViolet, We're About To See Just How Powerful Apple Really Is

When I hear the name UltraViolet as it pertains to Hollywood, good things don’t come to mind. Namely, I think about the 2006 Kurt Wimmer film of the same name that was awful. But that apparently isn’t stopping the Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem (an awful name in its own right) from choosing UltraViolet to be the name of its forthcoming new digital security format. The one much of… → Read More

Review: GermGuardian UV-C Mini Wand

I have an aunt who’s a germophobe. When she travels, she cleans the hotel room in which she’s going to stay. She goes so far as to clean the shower rod in the bathroom, lest some terrible contagion fall upon her. This Christmas, I’ll be getting her the Germ Guardian UV-C Mini Wand. Read on to enjoy the review. → Read More

He found out that 500 million birds are killed by impact with windows annually in the US, Canada and Mexico. → Read More
