Apple Patents Explore Echolocation, Text-To-Speech Voice With Adaptive Personalities

Apple’s looking into some intriguing things in a couple of new patent applications spotted oday, including sonar-style echolocation for passive proximity detection, and a text-to-speech engine that takes contextual cues about what it’s reading and adds personality to the computer-generated voices it employs. Random House shuts down Kindle text-to-speech for their titles

And so it begins: Random House has switched off Kindle Text-to-speech by default, angering educators and advocates for the blind in the process.
