Travel for Geeks: What's In Your Bag?

A true gadget nerd is only as good as the gadgets that they carry with them. We live in an age of amazing laptop bags with room, as well as special pockets, for just about everything a real world person could need, from cellphones to PDAs to the ubiquitous laptops. That doesn’t mean, however, that all gear carriers are made the same. In fact, the differences in gadget encumbrance not only make each road warrior and weekend geek unique, but can give you quite a bit of insight into the person carrying the pack. In today’s installment of Travel-for-Geeks, we take a look at the equipment three geeks on-the-street and ask them why they’re hefting what they are, what they left at home, and we’ll try to find out what they’d bring along if they could. → Read More

    Thunderdome Showdown: HSDPA Vs. EV-DO

The battle of the year! Cingular’s newcomer HSDPA squares off with Sprint’s crowd-favorite EV-DO. Speculation has been splattered from one side of the Internet to the other about which technology fairs better and I’m here to set the record straight. Using both a Novatel Merlin XU870 HSDPA ExpressCard and a Merlin EX720 EV-DO, during my travels to various points across the country I was able to fully realize the pros and cons of these bitterly contested opponents. Can EV-DO maintain its dominance over the WWAN arena with its consistent performance, or will HSDPA clinch the title with its fast and fancy footwork? → Read More

How Not To Get Your Laptop Stolen (And How To Protect Yourself If It Does)

Millions of laptops are stolen from travelers each year. (OK, I made that up, but it does happen a lot.) Or at least that’s what the notebook security companies want you to believe! (Actually, no, notebooks do get stolen quite often from people traveling.) People are going to swipe laptops no matter what, but there are a handful of steps you can take (and products you can buy!) to encourage ne’er-do-wells to lift some other sucker’s property instead of yours. → Read More

    Travel For Geeks: The Accessories

The CG staff travels a lot for work reasons and our own Mike Kobrin put together a tasty selection of gear he likes to travel with for work, but we didn’t want to stop there. After all, travel gives us geeks an excuse to buy more-mobile versions of things we already own, hunt for new solutions to travel problems we didn’t know we had and feel like giants when we use our travel-sized deodorants. (Yes, some of us do use deodorant.) To that end, we put together a list of some of our favorite products to take with us — for business and pleasure — and a few brands and Websites you’ll want to check out when you go shopping for travel-related accessories, both tech and otherwise. → Read More

Gaming on the Go: The Best of Laptop Gaming

Hitting the road or taking flight doesn’t mean that you can’t take the gaming with you. Unlike consoles, which are reduced to handheld games via a Sony PlayStation Portable, Nintendo GameBoy or Nintendo DS (not to mention all those mobile phone and PDA games), you can actually play the same PC titles on the go that you play at your desk. Of course you’re not going to be engaging in any epic multiplayer encounters on an Airbus A380, as no one will be too happy with you setting a Wi-Fi network, or running RJ-45 cables through the cabin, but that doesn’t mean strategy and action games are grounded either. Laptops can actually handle the latest games as well as any desktop system. → Read More

    Best Travel Notebooks

There has never been a better time to be a geek road warrior. Technologies exist today that seemed like the stuff of science fiction just a decade ago. Laptops in particular have seen a glorious augmentation of performance with a concurrent reduction of size. Good times. I recently found myself in this situation and, even in my position, it was an incredibly difficult situation. But given the process, I was able to note and demo several possibilities for all types of road warriors: → Read More

    The Ultimate Geek Go Bag

Last year, I built a mobile audio lab so I could do audio testing, recording, and writing on the go, but it quickly evolved into the geek’s ultimate travel pack. My particular setup is still slanted towards audio, but you can always adapt it to your specific needs. This is all stuff that can be kept in a small backpack, ready to go at a moment’s notice. → Read More
