Their two latest models, the 610 and the 9300, will cost about $1,000 (the 610 is $900) and feature large touchscreens that slide down to create a nearly flat surface.

I, personally, have never seen the value of these outside of kiosk environment but God bless HP for trying.

UPDATE – I didn’t realize it, but our own Dear Leader foretold the addition of a sliding screen way back in 2009. That post was in response to one of HP’s earlier Touchsmart models, a device that was hot garbage.

HP Redesigns the TouchSmart PC Experience

HP TouchSmart PCs offer high style and performance with reclining display for exceptional comfort

PALO ALTO, Calif., Feb. 7, 2011

HP today unveiled its first touchscreen desktop PCs to feature a 60-degree reclining display, enabling users to adjust the display’s position for a comfortable user experience.

With a sleek, clean appearance, the new HP TouchSmart610 Consumer PC and HP TouchSmart 9300 Elite Business PC recline from upright to almost flat, providing consumers and business users increased comfort for longer-term use and making it easier for businesses to engage customers.

“As a leader in touch computing, HP has made each iteration of the TouchSmart PC more intuitive, resourceful and fun for users,” said James Mouton, senior vice president, Desktop Organization, Personal Systems Group, HP. “The latest generation is no exception with a new design that makes it easier and more comfortable to use, and it allows businesses to integrate the TouchSmart where convenience, space constraints and appearance matter.”

Ergonomic design enables users to do more and share more

From creating art projects, to playing games, to enabling natural front-desk interaction where eye contact is important, the new HP TouchSmart PCs offer consumers and businesses increased range of motion, superior viewing and an intuitive touch experience.

Both the TouchSmart610 Consumer PC and TouchSmart 9300 Elite Business PC feature a 23-inch diagonal high-definition (HD) display(1) that reclines up to 60 degrees and tilts forward up to five degrees.

The wide-angle, LED backlit LCD screen provides optimal viewing angles, even when reclined, while advanced multitouch technology allows for an accurate response.

The TouchSmart PCs’ simple one-cord setup and slim, all-in-one design save space and allow them to fit into any room or business environment. For a clean and uncluttered appearance, control features are conveniently located to the right and left sides of the display.

Intuitive software, Beats Audio for immersive, personalized entertainment

With its refined industrial design and the latest version of HP TouchSmart software, the TouchSmart610 consumer PC makes it easier and more comfortable than ever to surf the web, edit photos or access social networks.(2)

In addition to touch-optimized applications from Hulu, Netflix, Rhapsody® and Twitter, as well as HP’s exclusive RecipeBox and webcam applications, users can add new applications via the TouchSmart Apps Center.(2) The TouchSmart610 also features Beats Audio™. A high-performance technology developed by HP and Beats by Dr. Dre™, Beats Audio allows listeners to hear music the way the artist intended it – just as it sounds in the studio.

For the gaming enthusiast, select models of the TouchSmart610 are available with Ubisoft®’s real-time strategy game, R.U.S.E.™ – a $49.99 value. Users will enjoy using multitouch navigation to deceive and manipulate enemies as they lead their nation to victory.

The TouchSmart610 also features the new HP LinkUp application, which allows users to wirelessly link a notebook PC to the TouchSmart using a home network.(3) Accessing and viewing applications, files and content from a notebook on the TouchSmart’s large HD screen creates a more comfortable and productive experience.(1) Changes are saved directly to the notebook so there are no file transfer hassles.

Innovative touchscreen PC technology for businesses

Ideal for customer-facing environments in hospitality, retail and healthcare, the HP TouchSmart 9300 Elite Business PC combines HP’s powerful touchscreen technology with essential business benefits. Businesses can configure the TouchSmart 9300 to meet a variety of workplace preferences, including desk or counter positioning, wall mount(4) or kiosk placement.

The TouchSmart 9300 delivers superb computing performance with second-generation Intel® Core™ processors and a choice of Windows® 7 operating systems. It also offers up to 16 gigabytes (GB)(5) of memory and an optional 160 GB(5) solid-state drive to enhance productivity and interaction with touchscreen applications. In addition, employees can log in using the HP TouchSmart Elite 9300 Business PC’s high-resolution, adjustable webcam(2) with facial recognition software for enhanced security.

The HP Interactive Solutions Partner Program for independent software vendors (ISVs) delivers touch-based customer solutions to businesses. Tikatok, a division of Barnes & Noble, has piloted several interactive kiosks as part of Barnes & Noble’s new Educational Toys & Games department. The kiosk, designed as a life-size book, features an interactive demo of Tikatok’s proprietary online application. The demo is hosted on HP TouchSmart PCs and allows children to try out the book creation module or read books that other children have created at Tikatok.com.

Chico’s FAS, which offers women’s clothing and accessories through Chico’s, White House|Black Market and Soma Intimates stores, has rolled out HP Business TouchSmart PCs in almost 1,100 stores. The PCs provide one-touch application access, enhanced employee training sessions with full-motion video and a technology platform for management packages.

Pricing and availability(6)

The HP TouchSmart610 Consumer PC is expected to be available on Feb. 9 in the United States at a starting price of $899.99. The HP TouchSmart 9300 Business PC is expected to be available in May in the United States; pricing will be provided closer to availability.

HP announced their latest desktop systems today, including a new consumer level all-in-one system, and a new business desktop. They also released the latest specs on their TouchSmart line, which will now be available with the Intel Core i3 and i5 CPUs. All of HP’s new systems are made without BFR/PVC products in the plastic, and the All-in-One is the first desktop to be made this way.

The new HP Pavilion All-in-One 200 consumer desktop features a compact design with wires. The base unit comes with a 21.5 inch LED monitor, an Intel E5400 CPU, 4GB of ram, and a 500GB hard drive. HP really intends this system to be a less expensive version of the TouchSmart, bringing the “computer as an appliance” functionality without the touch screen. The All-in-One is available now, with the MSRP starting at $699.

HP also updated the TouchSmart line. It’s now available with either a Core i3 or Core i5 processor, 4GB of ram, and a 1TB hard drive. It still features that custom touch screen interface, but the new CPU should eliminate the lag that we saw before. HP also worked with Dr. Dre to improve the sound quality by adding Beats Audio to the TouchSmart 600. HP brought in Corel to create a new touch screen specific version of Paint It Studio for graphic editing. The TouchSmart 300 is currently available on HP’s website for $799, the TouchSmart 600 (with the Core i3 and i5 processors and the Beats Audio) will be available on April 28th with an MSRP starting at $1099.

Finally, HP announced the Compaq 6005 Pro series, their latest business desktop machine. The new line features AMD processors, ATI Radeon 4200 graphics, and is customizable based on customer need. The 6005 machines also use a highly efficient power supply, and are produced without the use of BFR or PVC chemicals. The Compaq 6005 Pro Ultra Slim starts at $599, and should be available on April 26th from HP.

Short version: HP’s TouchSmart 600 isn’t the perfect solution for a touchscreen based home computer, but it comes pretty damn close. The TouchSmart system works well as an internet home appliance, but the thing that makes it special is also where it starts to show some problems. Features: 23-inch touchscreen Blu-ray playback Multiple inputs for video devices Wireless keyboard, mouse, and Media Center remote MSRP $1479.99 as reviewed Pros: TouchSmart interface is fun to use Perfect for a media appliance Clean design keeps clutter to a minimum Cons: Integrated graphics lack processing power Appliance style case could hamper repairs Fingerprints on the touchscreen can be distracting Full review: The TouchSmart 600 is one of the next generation of touch screen computer appliances developed by HP. While it’s not the ideal computer for a business or gamer user, it is ideal for a casual user or someone who wants easy access to media, or has a limited amount of space and needs something that can fulfill multiple roles. The system I reviewed came in a fairly decent configuration, sporting an Intel Core 2 Duo 9600, 4GB of RAM, and an Nvidia GT230. This makes the TouchSmart a fairly capable machine, albeit mainly useful from a media and internet appliance standpoint. It is worth noting, however, that HP recently came out with an upgraded version of the hardware, including a option to select a Core i7 720QM or Core i7 820QM processor. The part that makes it stand out from other systems is, of course, the touchscreen. HP built a custom interface over the top of Windows 7, and it works really well. The interface allows you to access Hulu, Twitter, Netflix, and a really nice recipe program. For the most part, the Hulu and Netflix interfaces are customized and optimized to work with the touch screen. The Netflix interface is particularly well done, and scrolls by nicely with the flick of a finger. I also (being a photographer) enjoyed the Canvas program. It really takes advantage of the multi-touch functionality, allowing you to shrink, enlarge, drag, and otherwise manipulate your images on the touchscreen. If you move at a slower pace, the screen is about 98% accurate. If you move too fast though, you do lose a bit of accuracy. The screen is responsive, but you do have to be careful not to flick too fast. Running programs in the background

Full review:

The TouchSmart 600 is one of the next generation of touch screen computer appliances developed by HP.

Running programs in the background will definitely have an impact on the responsiveness.

Cosmetically, the TouchSmart looks good. The black plastic shell fits in well no matter where you want to put it, and the 23 inch screen doesn’t have too much glare, though as you may be able to see in the pictures, it is extremely glossy and reflective. When I first took this machine out of the box, I immediately thought it would be ideal for in a den, dorm room, and even potentially in the kitchen. The TouchSmart comes with a low profile wireless keyboard and a standard wireless mouse. You technically don’t have to use the keyboard or mouse, due to the touchscreen having a keyboard, but don’t expect to be able to type with any speed using the on-screen keyboard. I supposed it’d be fine for Tweets or Facebook updates, but I’d be reluctant to use it for anything more strenuous.

It’s worth noting that the TouchSmart 600 also came with some Microsoft Surface programs, which, while pointless, are quite fun as technical demos. The Globe in particular is nicely executed, using multi-touch to rotate, zoom, and generally manipulate the world.

The bottom line: The TouchSmart 600 is a cool computer. The touchscreen is fun to play with, if not entirely practical for everyone. The custom interface makes it an ideal media platform, and I’d recommend for pretty much everyone except a power user. Casual games work great, but the TouchSmart lacks the computing power needed to run anything too graphically intensive. Prices start at $1049 directly from HP, but you can get it from other retailers at better prices.

Hewlett Packard refreshed their TouchSmart line of computers today. If you’re not familiar with these, imagine an iMac all in one computer that has a touch screen, and you’re most of the way there.

I really like the TouchSmart line, and use a second generation machine as my main Windows test computer. The touch interface is done via infrared, which is a very cost effective way of creating a touch interface on a large screen. Microsoft, in fact, uses it in their experimental TouchWall product that can make a touch screen of virtually any size wall (more TouchWall footage).

Overall I give the TouchScmart top marks – the only drawback is that it is inexplicably heavy at something like 60 lbs., and no one seems to know why. But since it sits on your desk, it’s not like you’re lifting it very often, so it doesn’t really matter.

But the machine is still all wrong. Anyone who has used one for a long time will tell you that they quickly revert to using the keyboard and mouse. And it isn’t because of the software or touch technology – both are fine.

Until September 16, HP is giving away six HP Photosmart Premium TouchSmart printers as part of their HP PRINT 09 Innovation Sweepstakes. All you have to do is send a Tweet on Twitter for your chance to win!

HP is giving away six HP Photosmart Premium with TouchSmart Web printers between September 11 and September 16. All you need to do is tweet about the innovation that you think will change printing or publishing forever and incorporate the #hpprint09 hashtag. Participants can be creative with their tweets, or retweet the sample tweet below from HP, but the important thing to remember is to tag it with #hpprint09 and then follow @HP_IPG to find out if they’ve won.

Today, HP updated their popular TouchSmart PCs. Both the IQ804 and IQ816 feature a 25.5-inch HD 1920×1200 resolution display. The main difference between the two boils down to a DVD drive for the 804 and Blu-ray drive for the 816 along with a few other minor spec changes. The 804 comes with a 2.10GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T5850 proc while the 816 has a 2.10GHz T8100 Intel proc. Both handle up to 4GB of RAM. Graphics are handled by an Intel GM965 Express Chipset. The IQ804 starts at $1900 and the IQ816 at $2100.

Hit the jump for specs on both.

When HP first introduced its TouchSmart PC line of desktop computers in 2007, it was a novel idea, but it also had enough flaws to keep many away from buying it. The TouchSmart was primarily meant for the kitchen, mainly because of the interactivity behind it, but also because it’s probably where the family interacts most in the home.
This new iteration of HP’s TouchSmart series (the IQ 504 & IQ 506) is better out of the box, not because it has more power and 64-bit processing, but also because HP has streamlined things a little with its own software interface. I tried out the IQ 506 ($1,399) and noticed a couple of significant changes. For one, the hardware itself is less obtrusive by taking up less room, despite the screen being bigger.
