Tip: Use packing peanuts to hold nails and screws in place

Using a foam packing peanut to hold a nail or screw in place is brilliant. I like to think of myself as a pretty mild-tempered person but any time anybody’s asked my wife about the most angry she’s ever seen me, she always tells the story of when we first moved into our apartment here in Boston and I went around the house hanging our window blinds. Shoulda used peanuts. Read More

Reminder: Please use your laptop ergonomically

Flickr’d Oh man, the Wall Street Journal sure is concerned about your Health and Well-being. It seems that laptop sales have, for the first time in recorded history, have overtaken desktop sales. That’s bad news because laptops encourage people to sit in all sorts of unhealthy positions and develop poor computer-using habits. (“Golly gee, why don’t I surf YouTube all night… Read More

Quick Tip: Hold down F2 on MacBook Air, new MacBook Pro at start up to enter Hardware Test Mode

Just an interesting little tidbit: there is a system test built into the EFI on MacBook Airs and MBPs – most Alu MBs with an Intel processor. If you hold F2 and start the computer, it will drop into hardware test version 3A152, which is apparently right in memory. This saved me when I didn’t have my MacBook Air start-up disk available. Tip of the Day: On Scarlett Johansson's success and nuptials

A charming soul sent us this note as a reaction to a story about young Scarlett Johansson getting married to Ryan Reynolds. While to many this would be a happy occasion, we can be assured that Ryan will be very disappointed because Scarlett Johansson is a clone and has no secondary sexual characteristics! This, clearly, is why she wouldn’t let us examine her when we were following her… Read More

Black Friday reports? Send them to tips@crunchgear.com

From here We received our first Black Friday report this morning from Florida where Best Buy was doing business as usual. Our spy went to the store at 4am and found no crowds or pushing. In a considerably sadder situation, a worker at a Long Island Wal-Mart was crushed and a woman miscarried. Holy crap, right? That said, tell us what you saw today in your travels. Email us at tips@cg or drop a… Read More

Mysterious boatload of something declared by Apple

We received a mysterious tip in our e-mail inbox from Ryan Peterson at ImportGenius.com that stated the following; Hi, I conducted a comprehensive analysis of Apple’s U.S. customs declarations over the past few months, and detected a massive surge–188 containers–of a new product never before imported by the company.  Given the dwindling stocks of the current generation, and the… Read More

Dear People Who Make Horse Catheters and Want Us to Write About You: Cory tells you how to send us links

Good old Cory Doctorow. Is there anything the man can’t do? He makes fiction, babies, and blog posts with reckless abandon and he has a nice soft head, like the head of a wee chick but a wee chick that can beat your ass in a conversation about Net Neutrality in a second. Anyway, InformationWeek hired Cory to tell the PR world how to submit links. His main suggestion? Send a link with an… Read More
