Homefront's Short Campaign Prompts Question: Is The Single-Player FPS A Lost Art?

PSM3, the PlayStation magazine, has reviewed THQ’s fancy new shooter Homefront. It got a respectable 83/100. What’s perhaps worrying, however, is that the single-player campaign clocks in at a mere five hours in length. With such a short campaign, you start to ask yourself: is that even worth the developer’s time? → Read More

THQ has teamed up with OnLive, whereby if you pre-order Homefront, the game that features a “nuclear-armed Korean People’s Army [invading] the USA,” you’ll get a free OnLive system. Said system would normally run you $99. → Read More

Will People Flip Out Over The New THQ Logo?

Well, well, well. THQ, the famous video game publisher that’s brought us all those UFC and WWE games, not to mention the criminally underrated (particularly if you have a beefy computer) Metro 2033, now has a new logo. Surprisingly, the logo doesn’t once mention the publisher’s distaste for the used games market, nor are the letters D-L-C anywhere to be found. → Read More

The First Augmented Reality Star Wars Game, Falcon Gunner, Hits The App Store

Star Wars and video games go hand-in-hand. There is a long line of Star Wars-themed games going back to the days of arcade games, and continuing through home console and mobile games. Now, the first augmented reality Star Wars game for the iPhone just hit the app store. It is called Star Wars Arcade: Falcon Gunner ($4.99, iTunes link).

The game starts with the scene from the original Star Wars inside the Millennium Falcon after they escape the Death Star and the TIE Fighters attack. You are Luke Skywalker in the gunner’s turret below, and you turn the iPhone to rotate around and shoot the attacking TIE Fighters while Han Solo and Princess Leah either encourage or heckle you depending on your skills. (“Let me guess, you are trying not to hit anyone.”) In the 360-degree background is the Death Star and an earth-like planet, which come into view depending on which way you turn. The game is completely immersive, and works especially well while sitting in a swivel office chair. → Read More

Mad Catz To Develop FightPads, FightSticks For WWE All Stars Video Game

Coming soon to your living room: WWE-branded Mad Catz accessories, specifically “FightStick(s)” and “FightPad(s)”. They’re being developed for the upcoming THQ video game WWE All Stars, the game that Dusty Rhodes (yes, the Dusty Rhodes) told me at E3 he was excited to be in. And then he told me to take a hike. Great day. → Read More

Buy Used Video Games? Then THQ Hates Your Guts.

THQ wins today’s “Well That’s A Stupid Thing To Say” award. The company, which is right about to publish WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2011, has adopted the increasingly common practice of only making available DLC to people who purchase the game new. That is, not buying a used copy. → Read More

Stung by low DS Lite sales, THQ looks to Nintendo 3DS for anti-piracy salvation

THQ is excited about the Nintendo 3DS, but not because it may open up new gameplay possibilities. Heavens no. THQ is excited about the Nintendo 3DS because it will help forestall the effects of piracy, at least for a little while. You know what else would discourage piracy? Creating good games. Just an idea. → Read More

This was truly a life-changing moment. Pro-wrestling legend Dusty Rhodes was at THQ’s E3 booth today promoting the upcoming release of WWE All Stars and WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2011. And wouldn’t you know it, he told me to beat it! Yes~! → Read More

There will be a Red Faction movie. Let that sink in for a moment.

Wow, someone has been tricked into making a Red Faction movie. That blows my mind. I base this on the first Red Faction for the PS2, which I don’t recall enjoying at all. Maybe it’ll be the first time we say the opposite of, “Eh, the book was better.” → Read More

THQ CEO says Sony's motion controller is actually named Arc, not Gem

Last time we heard, Sony’s motion controller was named Gem. That was according to EA’s CEO, John Riccitiello, back in early December. But THQ’s head man said today in an investor call that it’s named Arc. Either way it still seems like a novelty Wii Remote controller knock-off to us. Pass. (unless there’s a killer game and then we’ll jump on the bandwagon head first) → Read More

PlaySpan Strikes Deal With THQ To Power Micropayments

Micropayments startup PlaySpan has struck a major deal with games publisher THQ to power payments for its virtual currency. PlaySpan powers micro-payments across over 1,000 video games and virtual worlds and has virtual goods storefronts on Facebook, MySpace, within games and on its standalone site. THQ will be using PlaySpan’s payment methods to allow online gamers to purchase ICE (the company’s virtual currency) for the game Dragonica Online.

PlaySpan’s platform is attractive to many game publishers because it offers more than 85 global payment methods. Conspiracy theory: Is EA setting up EA Sports MMA to flop in order to secure the UFC license later on?

Here’s a conspiracy theory for you (someone call Jesse Ventura): is EA Sports MMA intentionally going to stink in order for EA Sports to lose the Strikeforce license and later acquire the UFC license? Let’s see. → Read More

THQ builds real-life Warhammer Rhino tank for kicks

I’ve seen some cockamamie promotions in my life, but building a damn tank? THQ, the developers behind Warhammer: Dawn of War II (which Peter is excited about), decided to do just that, for no particular reason — other than that it’s cool, I guess.

Head on in for video of the thing crushing cars again and again (and again). → Read More

Exclusive: Q and A with THQ’s Brian Farrell

THQ CEO Brian Farrell recently participated in a Q and A session here at the Pacific Crest Technology Leadership Forum in Vail, Colorado. While most of the focus at this particular conference is on financial performance and investing, Farrell’s session shed light on a few things that might interest gamers. In particular, Farrell spoke candidly about his company’s recent lackluster performance, a slew of new games coming out between now and next year, and the various challenges of developing for multiple platforms. He also dropped a tiny morsel concerning an upcoming MMO based on the Warhammer series that’s currently in development. → Read More

Video: Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II could be the coolest RTS game

http://www.gametrailers.com/remote_wrap.php?mid=36578 I’m not big into RTS or MMOs because I think they’re a waste of time. Nicholas and VV used to hound me about joining WoW, but I refused every single time. AT E3, however, Relic/THQ opened up my eyes to something new and exciting, Dawn of War II. I was sort of tricked into thinking that it wasn’t an RTS because it wasn’t like anything I’d seen before. Correct me if I’m wrong, RTS fanboys, but I hadn’t seen any other game where you could build up your separate platoons with all sorts of kick ass weaponry before going into battle. I’ll have to get a PC rig before the game launches next year and I’m OK with that. The game looks amazing. One more trailer with gameplay footage after the jump. → Read More

Exclusive: Star Wars: The Force Unleashed for iPhone

As far as we know and to THQ Wireless’ knowledge we’re the first with any sort of footage for the upcoming release of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and here it is for all of you readers. It’s a very cool game and an ingenious way of using the touchscreen. The accelerometer is only used to switch gameplay from landscape to portrait at any time. It’s still a work in progress and won’t be released until September 16, but we didn’t notice any glitches. I can say without a doubt that this is going to be a hot, hot game for the iPhone/iPod platform. Enough yapping. Enjoy the video. → Read More
