Texas Instruments Cuts 1,700 Jobs As It’s Driven Away From Mobile Chip Market By The Rise Of Custom Chipmaking

    Screen Shot 2012-11-15 at 11.05.14

Chipmaker Texas Instruments has announced it’s cutting 1,700 jobs as part of a business restructuring move. The company says it’s shifting its historical focus away from mobile chips because it’s become too resource and investment intensive to play in this space, blaming large customers “increasingly” developing their own custom chips. → Read More

    ti-logo

Amazon is in “advanced negotiations” to buy Texas Instruments’ mobile chip business, according to Israeli newspaper Calcalist, with the price expected to be in the billions of dollars range. If the deal goes ahead Amazon would take a step close to rivals Apple and Samsung by gaining the ability to design and manufacture its own mobile chips. → Read More

Texas Instruments Announces New Partnerships For OMAP 5, But Wait…There’s More

    TI2

Texas Instruments announced earlier today that they are partnering with Harman and iRobot to provide OMAP 5 as the core processor for new products being developed in these two companies. To understand what this means in TI’s greater strategy, we need to back up a bit to take a look as some other initiatives they have going on and see where they all tie together. → Read More

    national-semiconductor-corporation-picture

Texas Instruments has closed its $6.5 billion acquisition of fellow semiconductor manufacturer National Semiconductor. In April, Texas Instruments announced all-cash deal, which was valued at $25 per share. The deal has now cleared all regulatory reviews and has shareholder approval.

Santa Clara-based National Semiconductor is a semiconductor manufacturer, specializing in analog devices and… → Read More

Texas Instruments Promises All-Day Battery Life With 2013 OMAPs

    050115_a1000_14

Since battery technology isn’t really enabling us to pack more than a few watt-hours into our portable devices, companies like Intel, Nvidia, and Texas Instruments are working hard at making their chips and processors more efficient. Apple is acknowledged to be the leader here — their vertically-integrated device creation process (and the mysterious A5) gives them the control they need to… → Read More

With Adapter, Wi-Fi Comes To A Texas Instruments Graphing Calculator Near You

Texas Instruments will be adding Wi-Fi, via a new adapter, to its TI-Nspire CX Navigator graphing calculator. Wi-Fi! Is there a Cydia-like repository for TI applications? → Read More

Texas Instruments' Blaze tablet is for developers only

Well look at that: Texas Instruments has itself a tablet PC. It’s called the Blaze, it’ll be available this August, and it looks to be fairly well-equipped. A 10.4-inch screen (1024×768 resolution), built-in cellular modem, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and, for whatever reason, FM radio. Tablet PCs: the savior of the radio industry~! → Read More

Unsurprising: TI doesn't approve of calculator hacks

It wasn’t too long ago that hackers were successful loading custom firmware onto Texas Instruments calculators. This hasn’t been sitting well with TI, who have been sending legal threats to the plucky hackers. I’m not surprised, are you? → Read More

Brute forcing success: load any operating system onto your TI-83+ calculator

It’s been a very long time since I last used a Texas Instruments graphing calculator. I thought it was cool to write programs on the TI-80 I used in college. It seems that in the time since, things have gotten a little more complex: TI calculators now have cryptographically signed operating systems! Ostensibly this is to prevent clever hackers from loading their own operating systems onto the… → Read More

Chrome OS Partners: Acer, Adobe, ASUS, Freescale, Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments

Google is starting to respond to questions about the just announced Chrome operating system. In a short FAQ today they talked about cost and initial partners.

First of all, the software will be free, which was an easy assumption to make since it will be open source. Like Android, Google will not charge users or device manufacturers to use the Chrome OS.

Yesterday Google said they were already… → Read More

Texas Instruments develops wallet-size notebook adapter

Wanna know something about laptops? No matter how small and portable you make ‘em, the AC adapter’s always going to be the size of a ham sandwich. Well that gravy train is about to crash into a brick wall of ingenuity thanks to Texas Instruments. The company has apparently developed a 90-watt AC adapter that measures 85x60x11 millimeters or, as the above photo shows, about the size of a wallet. → Read More

IBM and TI feel the heat, lay off thousands

Just so you know it isn’t just the younger players dropping jobs like it’s going out of style, it looks like the blue chips are feeling it, too. IBM and TI filed their papers just recently and they have been found to be scraping the bottom as well. TI more than IBM, but still. Condolences to all. → Read More

Students, putting games on your TI-84 calculator is pretty easy

This is an oldie but a goodie—just like CBS FM in New York—especially as school starts pretty soon for kids in the northeast. It’s step-by-step instructions on how to install games onto your TI-84 or TI-84 Plus Silver Edition calculator. The games aren’t too complicated, but they’ll help you get through physics or calculus class with some degree of sanity. → Read More

Dell's pocket projector outed, we told you so

TI's 3D projector "press photo" is pretty damn crazy

    Texas Instruments intros lamp-free projectors

Your next projector (or first projector?) may very well not have a lamp in it. Texas Instruments recently showed off some prototype devices using what it’s calling “PhlatLight” LED lighting. Cool, it’s like the “F” in FlatLight is actually “Ph” instead. That’s both radical and extreme at the same time. Anyhoo, TI claims that this new technology will eliminate the need to replace… → Read More

Texas Instruments drops world's first WUXGA DLP chip into projector

When Devin and Matt were in town for the CrunchNetwork party we decided to go and see Iron Man on opening day. When I was picking the venue on Fandango I decided to opt for the DLP projection room and I’m glad I did. I couldn’t really put my finger on it, but it just looked better. It was brighter and crisper. DLP makes good stuff. Today, TI announced that the DLP group has implemented the… → Read More

    Texas Instruments pocket projector prototype

Here’s something that excites me greatly. It’s a prototype of a tiny projector that fits inside of a cell phone. It’s up to device manufacturers to integrate it into their products. I’d think… → Read More

    DLP invades IMAX, replaces film

Isn’t OMSI cool looking? IMAX theaters are set to rid themselves of 70mm film and replace it with TI’s fancy DLP Cinema digital movie files for 2D and 3D movies. So I guess those cool viewing bays with the film going around are now obsolete, which is kind of sad because that was neat to look at while waiting on line. At least it was at the OMSI in Portland. But the DLP cinema projectors… → Read More

DLP powered Sim2 C3X 1080p projector now shipping

Looking for an ultra high-end 1080p home cinema projector that you won’t want to hide in a cabinet? Well, Sim2 seems to own this category and the latest edition is now shipping and it looks great. I had the opportunity to check them out and see David Lynch in full HD from his home in California (I think). He loves the Sim2 and picked them out of a handful of other high-end projectors. TI Navigator Adds Wireless Connectivity To Calculators

I’ll admit, when I first saw the TI Navigator, I couldn’t help but think why someone would need wireless connectivity on a calculator. According to Texas Instruments, the TI Navigator is more of a device for the classroom than the individual student. It allows the teacher or professor to view the student’s calculator in real-time so they can see where people are getting stuck on… → Read More
