While I doubt they’re much healthier for the environment than a $10 drug store Timex, you can at least pretend you’re heeding the Lorax while wearing one of these thanks to the eco-friendly bill of materials shown on their website.

You can buy these guys online and, sadly, they all feature quartz movements (but they come with mercury-free batteries).

Last week during Apple’s iPhone 4.0 Preview, Steve Jobs announced iAd, a product that could help turn the mobile ad industry on its head. The new product lets developers quickly integrate rich, HTML5 ads into their applications — ads that Jobs says will meld the emotion of television commercials with the interactivity of online advertising. There’s just one problem — many of the rich ads you see online are built in Flash, which the iPhone and iPad famously do not support, and Apple doesn’t appear to be offering tools for building HTML5 ads. Sprout, a startup that’s long dealt with rich Flash applications, may have the answer: its ‘Engage Ads’ platform allows advertisers to build rich ads and simultaneously deploy them in both Flash and HTML5.

In other words, Sprout could be the magic bullet advertisers are looking for, allowing them to build ads that will work both in desktop browsers and smartphones. Today, the platform is launching a private beta to advertisers, which you can apply to here. Note that at this point, Sprout’s platform is focused completely on serving ad agencies and large businesses, so mom-and-pop shops won’t be accepted yet.

Sprout’s ad builder uses drag-and-drop, WYSIWYG tools and doesn’t require any coding. CEO Carnet Williams says that while the platform is designed to be easy to use, it allows for a high level of customization, and allows advertisers to build and integrate their own ad components. One of the nifty features of the platform: even after deploying an ad, you can modify it from Sprout’s platform and the changes will be reflected immediately in the wild on both HTML5 and Flash versions of the ad.

You can see an example ad that automatically switches between HTML5 and Flash depending on what your browser supports here. If the ad looks familiar, it’s probably because it’s the one that Steve Jobs showed during his presentation as an example that has interactivity but not much in the way of emotion. In other words, using Sprout doesn’t guarantee that an ad will live up to the iAd promise — the creative will be key as well.

So how does Sprout already have a HTML5 export tool available when iAd was only announced last week? Williams says that the company made a big bet over a year ago that things would be moving toward HTML5, especially given that the iPhone had shown no signs of supporting Flash. That bet looks like it may pay off. As for competitors, Williams says that Adobe’s CS5 does include some Flash-to-HTML5 exporting, but that this still requires that the advertiser know ActionScript, and it also means the advertiser has to find a way to serve the ad— Sprout’s service takes care of ad hosting. Aside from that, Williams says there aren’t many comparable options, though I suspect the field will be much more crowded very soon.

We should note that the ad platform is a relatively new business for Sprout — the company has long offered tools for building Flash apps, but these tools were marketed toward consumers, not advertisers.
Sprout is notable for the power it gives non-techies to design impressive pieces of distributable content, which can be used primarily for viral marketing campaigns. These pieces, called “sprouts”, are like mini-websites in that they can contain pages with elements you’d find on regular webpages: text, links, graphics, video, audio, and even interactive components like polls and maps. In April, Sprout announced an SDK that could be used by 3rd party developers to integrate functionality into the Sprout creation tool, thereby turning it into a platform of sorts.
Cluttered and candy-coated are two ways to describe Wix, a new Flash-based website and widget creation tool that we’ve been anticipating for months. It’s also feature-rich, very well-designed, and – sorry – still in private beta. Wix joins a multitude of browser-based website creators such as Weebly, Synthasite, and Google Pages. But it reminds me the most of Sprout, a widget-creation tool that can also be used to make websites, since both provide fluid Flash interfaces that appeal to your inner designer. Both of these companies are blurring the line between content that’s meant to stand alone as distinct websites, and content that’s meant for syndication over blogs, social networks, and other destinations. It’s because of this obfuscation that they’ve opted to use the unspecific, yet self-referential, names “sprout” and “wix” when referring to their creations. Whereas Sprout is mainly marketed as a tool for spreading media content, Wix most certainly appeals to a younger population that’s obsessed with expressing themselves online (call them MySpacers, if you will). Wix does have a collection of tasteful business themes, but the vast majority of its templates are for fun and fall into categories like “street art”, “emo”, “playground”, and “sexy”. Once you pick a theme for your new website (or widget, just depending on your dimensions), you are taken to a popup Wix Editor that provides you with an overwhelming number of ways to spice up your creation. You can add shapes, clipart, photos, videos, songs and animations; you can tweak colors and set visual effects for user behavior; and you can add text paragraphs and headlines. Photos can be uploaded manually or pulled in from either Flickr or a royalty-free stock collection; videos can be embedded from YouTube; and there’s also a collection of free song clips that can be used in a range of skinnable music players. Each wix supports multiple pages with links between them. When you want to edit a particular object on a page, you click on it and options for rotating, resizing, and positioning are revealed. A Mac OS-looking doc at the bottom of the screen also provides icons for setting effects, behaviors, animations, and more. You really need to play around with Wix to fully appreciate how much flair and how many customization options it affords. As you work on your wix, you can hit a preview button to see what it will look like.

As you work on your wix, you can hit a preview button to see what it will look like. And once you’re done with it, you can publish it either as a website hosted on the wix.com domain or as a widget to be embedded or sent to friends via email.

One of the major complaints many have about Flash is that it doesn’t allow for indexing by search engines. Wix gets around this by producing content that’s a hybrid of HTML and Flash, despite the fact that it’s editor is entirely Flash-based. This will be a huge benefit to anyone who uses Wix to set up a serious website, but it probably won’t make any difference to widget creators.

Update: Wix is giving out a couple hundred private beta invites to readers who email info@wix.com with requests.

Sprout – the impressive browser-based tool that debuted at DEMO in January and suddenly made it feasible for non-developers to create rich Flash-based widgets – has got even better with the release of v1.5. One of the most promising things about Sprout was that it integrated third-party services. At launch, publishers could add to their widgets, among other components, polls from PollDaddy and maps from Yahoo. Since there are countless other web services that could potentially widgetize themselves, Sprout has decided to release an SDK that effectively turns the tool into a platform. As if to demonstrate the SDK’s possibilities, the company is debuting support for Twitter, Seesmic, and Google forms (which allow you to collect information from users in a Google spreadsheet). Expect others to follow on their own volition. In addition to the SDK, Sprout is adding some simple animation effects for when users interact with the various parts of a widget. You can now, for example set shapes to bevel or blur when someone clicks or hovers over them. Simple undo functionality has also been added, although I’m still waiting for proper layers. Sprout is going from strength to strength, and as word about its capabilities spreads further, we can expect it to become quite the acquisition bait. This is a marketer’s dream tool in an era of social media/advertising, and Sprout shouldn’t have any trouble monetizing its service given that widgets are effectively advertisements for many publishers. Now with the SDK, Sprout should also attract the attention of many startups, too. The company says that 30% of its widgets have been posted to MySpace, 20% to Facebook, 25% to other social media sites, and 25% to general websites. The largest segment creating Sprout widgets are labels and artists, followed by religious and non-profit organizations, venues, and events. See a sample widget from Universal Music (which unfortunately I can’t embed because it auto-plays music). CrunchBase Information Sprout Information provided by CrunchBase

A new application called Sprout, launching in private beta at DEMO today, promises to make the creation of Flash applets a whole lot easier. Sprout is a browser-based, WYSIWYG editor for Flash with an interface reminiscent of Photoshop or Dreamweaver. Designers can use it to create, publish and track Flash widgets, websites and mashups, thereby obviating the need for them to work with programmers who would cost time and money, and who might not execute designs satisfactorily. The application itself is entirely Flash/Flex-based and won’t require account registration for first-time users (that is, once the private beta period is over). As can be seen in the screenshot to the left, the interface consists of a staging area for construction of a so-called “sprout” (don’t call it a widget!), as well as several panels for tools, components, pages, properties, and more. I found that my experience with Photoshop served me well for creating a sprout (embedded below) that displays TechCrunch feeds, since the same editing concepts are applied by both programs. That said, it would be nice if Sprout had undo capabilities and proper layering, as found in Photoshop. While all WYSIWYG editors lack at least some of the functionality achievable through direct programming, Sprout overcomes this limitation in part by providing a library of “components” that can be integrated into a given creation. The company has lined up general components such as video, slideshows and RSS feeds in addition to components from 3rd party web services such as Meebo, Yahoo Maps, PollDaddy and Ribbit. Sprout is marketing its release as a better way for designers to create distributable widgets. The company has partnered up with Clearspring, Gigya, and SpringWidgets to provide both easy distribution and tracking/analytics. Sprout creators can track the usage of not only entire sprouts but the elements, such as buttons, within those sprouts. They can also use the application to make changes to sprouts that have already been distributed across the web. While Sprout’s current focus is on the widget use case, its capabilities don’t end there. Since you can create sprouts of any dimensions, there’s nothing stopping you from creating entire websites using Sprout. Its pages and linking functionality certainly lend themselves to this type of creation. And since Sprout has incorporated 3rd party services, it can also be used to create mashup pages/portals. The range of possibilities will increase when Sprout releases an SDK in the following month, allowing outside developers to add to the components library.

Sprout should be publicly available in the next few weeks. Until then, the first 200 TechCrunch readers to sign up here will gain access to its private beta. A video demonstration of Sprout is provided below, alongside the RSS feed sprout I created for TechCrunch (hosted on their demo server so it may go down).
