Rumor! Grains of salt and whatnot. Forward-looking statements, etc. Thinking caps on, pencils down and what have you. Gearfuse apparently got a tip from an insider close to the HTC Dream saying that the device “will feature a keyboard and trackball almost identical to the Sidekick.” If this is true, fine by me. The Sidekick’s got a nice keyboard. I’m not head-over-heels, take-it-to-the-prom in love with the trackball but it gets the job done. This video from a few weeks ago is supposedly the Dream in action and, yes, the fleeting glances of the keyboard and trackball make them look like they could be in the same league as the Sidekick’s. → Read More
YOUUUUUUUUUUUU!!! Besides being a master lyricist with such classic lines as “Gurl B Double O-T-Y-M-E A T You Know It Dats Dat Bootymeat”, Soulja Boy also happens to be a cell phone aficionado and a super amazing gamer. Knowing this, Danger apparently sent him an otherwise unreleased Xbox 360 themed Sidekick LX, which he in turn filmed and put online. Update: And by that, of course, we mean he installed a widely available theme and pretended it was special. Looks like Danger might be using their recent Microsoft acquisition to push out yet another limited edition handset. The only differences visible in the video are on the software end of things – a bit of 360 based graphic and sound modifications, and some sort of ancient looking Resident Evil mobile game. Unless somethings going on on the backside, the hardware is all the same — even the mood light LEDs are still blue, rather than the 360′s signature green. YOOOOUUUUUUUU!!!! Here’s an apparent video of the HTC Dream running Google’s Android operating system. The video looks to have been shot at incredibly high altitude, as even the most basic and delicate hand movements have left the guy working the camera completely out of breath. This looks a little clunky for an HTC device so I don’t want to say that this is definitely definitely definitely the HTC Dream but whatever it is, the Sidekick-like sliding screen looks nice. For all we know, it could just be a tricked-out Sidekick so take what you see here with a grain of salt. Unless you’re the guy who shot the video – it sounds like you might benefit from cutting salt out of your diet altogether. via BGR → Read More
Good morning from CrunchGear. We have the new Sidekick 2008, a svelter, sexier version of everyone’s favorite messaging phone here in the office in a sexy shell from SidekickShells.com. The phone itself is $149 with a two year contract and shells are $14.99 for one and $20 for two. The shells are probably the coolest thing about the new phone, aside from the amazing size and weight. Compared to the LX, this thing is a feather-light. UPDATE – Based on a random drawing the winner is Shaun. He intends to write “Hands off” on his Sidekick. We don’t blame him. → Read More
Word on the street is, and by street I mean Cellphone Signal, that the Sidekick Gekko/Gecco has been officially dubbed the Sidekick 2008. Hiptop3 points out that this should be a red flag considering it’s July of 2008. If you’re familiar with Sidekicks then you know that the back of the swivel screen clearly states what model it is and according to the last thumbnail it just says “Sidekick.” Do people still ‘skin’ there phones? → Read More
I’ve been a fan of the Sidekick for years now and, like everyone else, I was disappointed when the latest devices (LX and Slide) from T-Mobile were sans video recording capability. It was basically a slap in the face if you ask me. Who releases four new devices in the span of a year without video recording on any of them? Hello! It’s 2008 not 1998. In any case, Sidekick LX owners will finally get the much-needed feature via OTA beginning June 25. Of course, you can pick up the Tony Hawk edition, which comes with the latest firmware pre-installed. But video recording isn’t the only new feature. Sorry Slide owners, you’re SOL. → Read More
It is according to the BGR, but it won’t be available until mid-July. The Birdman’s limited edition Sidekick will supposedly have a “skateboard look and feel with a grip-tape-texture and his well known hawk graphic.” Stoked for the signature Hawk graphic since it’s something I mentioned that I’d like to see on this limited edition SK from T-Mobile. More importantly, the Tony Hawk version of the Sidekick LX will ship with stereo Bluetooth support and the ability to record video, which other LX owners will get as an OTA later on this year. If I decide to go to bed at a reasonable hour today and someone is up super late then feel free to check out the Sidekick site since BGR says it will show up there sometime tonight or early tomorrow. Update: Photo after the jump. → Read More
There isn’t anything new revealed in the manual pages that Hiptop3 managed to get a hold of for the upcoming Gekko aka Aspen Sidekick, but here it is anyway. Photos taken with the 2-megapixel camera can be stored on the device or microSD and videos (.3GP format) can only be stored on external memory. Nothing exciting. → Read More
Sort of a disappointment, but at least we know it’s out there. Doesn’t look much different than what’s on the LX right now. More Gecko details here. Totally fake! → Read More
I’m beginning to wonder whether or not I really want to switch back to the Sidekick after spending the last few months with the Curve. I can’t handle these tiny upgrades that should have been there to begin with. Nevertheless, Sidekick LX owners will be getting A2DP during the next OTA says Hiptop3. → Read More
Hey Danger/T-Mobile- It’s nice to finally see you bringing video playback and capture capabilities to the Sidekick LX. That only took 6-million years to do, but as the cliché goes, better late than never. According to Hiptop3, it’s unclear which video format the LX will support. So it could be H.264 or H.263. I’m pretty sure it’s going to be H.263, though. Don’t ask why, but the half-ass-ness we’ve seen before on the Sidekicks is enough evidence to back this up. Oh, one more thing. The LX saw a $50 price drop so it might be a good time to pick one up. → Read More
Well, here it is, folks, the Sidekick Gekko/Aspen. It’s still unclear which name T-Mobile will be going with, but it’s clear that they’re the same device. From the looks of it it’s pretty obvious that the Gekko takes design cues from the iD and you may be able to customize the bumpers. Hiptop3 also has word that the screen on the Gekko will be the same Sharp AQUOS LCD that resides on the LX. Again with the .5 upgrades. So weak sauce. → Read More
Flickr’d If TmoNews is to be trusted and something tells me they should be then here’s a bit of info on the Sidekick Gekko I told you about the other day. It will be an entirely new device and not a limited edition LX or Slide like Tony Hawk’s forthcoming model. It will, however, replace the iD with a few major upgrades. Does anyone else feel like the Sidekick gets refreshed in half increments? For example, the Sidekick 3 was more like a Sidekick 2.5 while the LX and Slide were what the 3 should have been. Right? Anyway, the Gekko will see a 2-megapixel camera (bout damn time) with video capture. It will be highly customizable and may have some sort of video sharing software. TmoNews believes the Gekko and Aspen are one in the same. Who knows. → Read More
Today is chock full of Sidekick rumors and this one seems a bit more plausible than the prior one. Hiptop3 is claiming that the Birdman is getting his own Limited Edition LX on July 16th, which is two days before the start of Tony Hawk’s Boom Boom Huckjam presented by T-Mobile Sidekick. There are no other details at the moment so we’ll take this with a grain of salt as well, though it’s not as big as the one TmoNews is forcing upon us. I just hope this LX gets a Birdman skull. → Read More
TmoNews seems to have the inside scoop that there may be two new Sidekicks being announced in late July. The SK Gekko is slated for July 27th and the Sidekick Aspen should surface on the 30th. It’s unclear whether or not these are new devices or anything else, really. So let’s all take a big chunk of salt with this one. But this gives me hope that the recent acquisition by Microsoft is not the end of the Sidekick line. My BlackBerry is starting to bore me and I miss the Hiptop. Keep your fingers crossed. → Read More
