Unlike other automakers, Tesla is headquartered in the hills of Palo Alto next to beautiful rolling hills with lush green scenery and horse crossing signs. As you can imagine, a place like this would have some of the best driving roads in the country. We were slightly disappointed that the man behind it all, Elon Musk, was out of town. But coincidentally this gave us the perfect opportunity to borrow his personal Roadster Sport while he was gone.

The CEO’s Roadster came fully loaded with all the carbon fiber you could dream of — which it needs to keep weight around 2,700 lbs. The fully electric car has a 990 lb battery that delivers 215 kW of power. It’s capable of propelling the Roadster to a supercar-fast 0-60 mph in only 3.7 sec. Not only is the Roadster fast, but it also has an enormous range of 245 miles. A fully charged battery stores 56 kWh of electric energy (the Volt’s battery stores 16 kWh).

During hard testing in the mountains we clocked 165 miles before the low battery warning light came on. Considering our driving, it’s hard to believe Top Gear only made it 55 miles.

There is something very magical about driving the Tesla Roadster. It’s the realization that the future is truly here. Not only is the Tesla an electric car, it’s also engineered to perform. You can see that in every sharp turn or long straightaway. The Tesla Roadster pulls forever as if powered by smiles, a childhood dream come true.

The electric sports car scene is heating up with Porsche‘s confirmation of a new all-electric sports car based on its Boxster. The company is conducting daily tests of three research cars to study battery systems and electric drive components.

Porsche President and CEO Michael Macht said in a statement that Porsche will “definitely be offering electric sports cars in the future,” but that the performance and cruising range must be comparable to existing sports cars. Greater efficiency and lower emissions are the company’s goals for the new vehicles.

The Boxsters will compete with Tesla‘s Roadster, which has been in production since 2008 and recently received a makeover. With Tesla’s help, Toyota is rumored to also be working on an electric sports car.

The original Boxster was produced in 1996 and became the company’s top selling car for about seven years.

Electric Boxster cars will be field tested early next year to determine what infrastructure is needed to support regular usage and to observe how users drive the car.

But don’t get too excited yet – it will still be a while before the new Boxsters hit the road, and with companies like Mercedes and Audi also working on electric sports cars, they will have plenty of competition.

Maybe the 0-60 mph in 3.9-second Tesla Roadster isn’t quick enough for some folks. Maybe some trust fund babies want to spend an extra $20k to improve that time to only 3.7-seconds. Well, Tesla unvealed the Roadster Sport today at the companies first NYC dealership just for them. This model will cost $128k. We already knew that this model was coming – along with the NYC dealership – but how about a quick recap?

The new Sport model features a a hand-wound stator and the winding density was increased. The hand winding allows more wires to be used within the electromagnet, which in turns allows for more current to hit each segment increasing the current. The higher current then spins the attacted rotor faster and sends the Tesla Roadster Sport to 60MPH faster than a $194k Porsche 911 GTS. And remember, the all-electric Tesla doesn’t use any gasoline while kicking the pants off of a Porsche.

Apparently Bill Clinton was mere moments away from <strike>picking up chicks</strike> experiencing the finest in green transportation all over Burbank, California in a Telsa Roadster. Jeremy Snyder, general manager of the Los Angeles Tesla Store, handed a set of keys to Mr. Clinton at the end of a President’s Day luncheon after the former president expressed interest in driving a Roadster.

At that point, however, secret service agents informed Clinton that it was time to leave. Come on, Secret Service – it was President’s Day! That’s like your bonus birthday if you’ve ever been the president before. Let the guy have a little fun, eh? Apparently during lunch “President Clinton announced he was eager to take the Roadster for a ride around the block.”

Around the block – come on!

Greenwich Time, the newspaper for denizens of Greenwich, Connecticut, got to look at the Tesla Roadster and came away awed, if a little empty. Greenwich is a town famous for being the home to many New York millionaires who wish to lay their red, pulsating egg sacs under stately old oaks. Colin Gustafson, a “special correspondent” (read: someone related to one of the editors) rode along with a rich man named Gary Patrick on his first test drive of the Tesla Roadster.

What did this rich man have to say about the car? He was impressed enough to put down $108,000 to buy his own and he really enjoyed going fast while still helping the “environment.”

“We’re in a wealthy area,” Patrick added, “so, while gas prices aren’t as much of an issue, you can still feel like you’re fulfilling your green responsibiltity [sic] and reducing your carbon footprint with a car like this.”

He then proceeded to suck the intestines out of the reporter’s gut and before the Roadster flew into a ditch he unfurled his dark wings and flew into the air towards Hartford. He is now unavailable for comment although he did dropped a gardener’s severed head onto the roof of the Greenwich Post Office, which presumably signifies buyer’s remorse in his dread language.

I saw two guys riding Spyder Roadsters last night — it was too dark to get pictures — and I was amazed. These are three-wheel motorcycles with two articulated wheels up front and a powered wheel in back. They were hitting about 60 MPH running alongside us and when they went to pass they literally looked like Storm Troopers on Speeder Bikes. The entire frame articulates slightly at high speeds, giving them an incredible boost. Has anyone ridden one? Care to share the experience?
