Plextor’s latest Blu-ray writer is of course the fastest yet. That’s a given as speed increase, not decrease. The PX-LB950UE writes at 12x speeds, which is twice as quick as the previous version. The magic comes by way of USB 3.0 and eSATA connectivity where the older models relied on USB 2.0. The drive can write both single and dual layer discs and is LightScribe enabled. All this Blu-ray fun doesn’t come cheap, though. The Plextor PX-LB950UE is available now at a $239 MSRP. → Read More
Plextor, Plextor… Seems they have a new Network Attached Story for you to consider. It’s the PX-NAS2, and it’s the company’s first NAS. Two bays in this bad boy—that means you can slip two hard drives in there, if you please. → Read More
All the cool kids are playing SSDs these days. So much so that every manufacturer wants of piece of the sweet cherry pie. Even Plextor who was previously known as an optical drive/media company has a set of 64GB and 128GB SSDs available now. Too bad these options tastes more like a supermart-made pie than your grandma’s home cooking. → Read More
It seems like nearly every computer accessory maker has a line of SSDs now and Plextor just joined that club with two SSDs. The company showed off its upcoming models at CES 2010, but now both the 64GB and 128GB options are available — for a pretty price. → Read More
We’ve reported on the Qflix service before – you’ll recall that it basically lets you download movies from the CinemaNow movie service and burn them onto blank DVDs as though they were actual, real-life, CSS-encoded DVDs like you’d find in a store. Such magical, whimsical, techo-wonderment is only possible by using special hardware found in participating DVD burners, and Plextor has just announced two of them. The PX-Q840U (above, left) is a 20X external burner with an MSRP of $149.99, while the PX-806SA (above, right) is an internal 20X DVD burner that’ll sell for $89.99. Plextor’s site lists both of the drives as “coming soon” but the company’s recent press release that they’re both available now through distributors and retailers. → Read More
OK, so I showed you Buffalo’s new USB 2.0/FireWire hard drives, so here’s Plextor’s external dual-layer DVD±RW drive to go with them, which includes combo ports as well. And it is also Plextor’s first external drive to feature 10x DVD+R dual-layer recording speed (6x for -R). Also, while some drive makers throw in some “lite” utilities, Plextor’s including the Roxio Easy Media Creator 8 software suite along with its PlexTools Professional software, a package of six utilities for getting the most out of the drive. This seems like a great choice for a home or office where upgrading the optical drives on your computers isn’t an option. Or, since it’ll work with Windows and Mac, it’s a good option for a mixed-OS situation. It’ll be available mid-November with a MSRP of $159. For the time being, you can check out more details on Plextor’s European site. → Read More
I get a considerable amount of pleasure from throwing the countless AOL discs I receive in the mail through the Fellowes shredder I have in my office. Unfortunately, this creates a huge pile of plastic shards and allows the organic dye coating the discs to escape and possibly cause environmental damage. Plextor aims to solve the problem with its standalone PlexEraser PX-OE100E drive. Designed for industries such as finance, government/military and research and large corporations with sensitive information, the $249 device uses a laser beam to destroy all data stored on a disc and works with eight types of disc formats in both 12cm and 8cm sizes. It might not be as satisfying as tossing them through a shredder or as fast since it takes about three minutes to destroy a single disc, but at least it leaves them ready to recycle and won’t help create three-eyed fish. <img src="http://tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com/2007/01/RWs at 24x. No pricing or availability and it seems like a bit of a niche product. It's powered by USB only, so there won't be an ugly wall wart to worry about. I have a Gateway ultralight , the NX100 with only one “spindle” – that’s marketing talk for any disk drive, which, in this case, is a hard drive – and no optical drive. As a result, I’ve been looking for something like this, actually, so I’m glad they’re now available and sufficiently portable to warrant stuffing one into a laptop bag. Not much else is known about the PX-608CU aka Add and NT At the End and Have Hours of Fun With Your Friends, but we’ll keep you posted.
