MediaMall, the folks behind the popular PlayOn media software, just announced the closed beta of PlayLater, a so-called DVR for online video. The service, which is available in a closed beta starting today, allows users to “record” online programming from over a dozen service for viewing later either on the computer it was recorded on or a device loaded with the retail version of PlayOn.

PlayOn, an iOS app for the iPhone and iPad, has gained a major update and now allows media streaming over WiFi and 3G. This includes playon content like Hulu, Netflix, Comedy Central, and MTV.
The system requires a computer running the PlayOn server. Once outside of the home, the server sends content over the air in HTML5 format, allowing you to watch almost anything anywhere.

PlayOn is good piece of software but it also requires Windows Media Player 11 to install. This is a problem on Windows Home Server as I just discovered while reviewing a Moxi HD DVR review. However, it can be installed as one intrepid commenter pointed out.
