Anthony Coombs is CEO of Interact and a passionate Philly tech booster who helped us gather a great group of people last week to our Mini Meet Up. I took him into a dark quiet corner to talk about his startup, the tech scene in Philly, and the burgeoning NJ/PA tech corridor. → Read More
While the name may be a bit unruly, TalkFavorites.me is a rating system for the best stuff near you. There are no reviews to AstroTurf, no business details to mess up, and no horribly-written screeds against unfairly-judged businesses. Instead, you vote for the best stuff in your area and then consult those lists as you look for, say, the best pizza in West Chester, Penn.

Know what I learned the last time I was in Philadelphia? Ben Franklin invented EVERYTHING. So it may be that Mr. Franklin is behind the surprise early launch of T-Mobile’s 3G service in his fair city. A post left yesterday on HowardForums details the adventures of one young man unexpectedly enjoying “800-1000kbps download and 200-300kbps upload” speeds. While some definitive rollout dates… → Read More

A Wi-Fi signal broadcasts in Philadelphia. Let’s all celebrate! Right. The municipal Wi-Fi system in Philadelphia that was abandoned a few months ago is now back, thanks to a local gaggle of investors. The network, which was started by Earthlink some three years ago, is about 80 percent complete. The goal is to cover as many of the city’s 1.6 million residents in Wi-Fi. The new group… → Read More
My buddies Tim and Eric from Geekadelphia sent this over and I just couldn’t stop laughing like a hyena for five minutes. Storm Troopers invaded the field and Darth took on the Phillie Phanatic in a deadly lightsaber duel. Why can’t Storm Troopers show up to everything? → Read More
I guess Philly is the new hotbed of geekdom because on top of the Star Wars exhibit that’s still going on at the Franklin Institute, they’ve got Don Miller aka No-Carrier who’s a bit of an artist. His medium happens to be NES consoles and magical game cartridges programmed to create visuals that might cause flashbacks from your Dead/Phish/Techno/whatever days (if, of course, you… → Read More
As the resident tattooed freak at CG, I feel inclined to inform those of you with Rock Band that you’ve got some great Americana included besides those classic rock tracks you’ve been jamming to the last few months. Being able to tattoo your band members in the game isn’t anything new, but do you know any of the history behind some of the tattoo flash that’s available? Have… → Read More

I think it’s safe to say that everyone knows what each and every one of the included photos is and which episode it was from, so I don’t need to bore you with details. I was hoping they’d have an Imperial speeder bike since those were my favorites as a kid, but they didn’t. I almost cried about it. → Read More
It’s hard photographing subjects in crowded museums and such, but it’s even harder when there’s tons of glare and the object you’re trying to shoot is encased in glass. I did my best and hope you guys like it. All of the models and props at the Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination exhibit at The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia were used in at least one of the six… → Read More
So I finally got around to getting a true Philly Cheesesteak this weekend. I was aware of the whole Pat’s versus Geno’s thing, but a sizable contingent of local Philadelphians steered Peter and me to Jim’s on South Street. As a born-and-bred Midwesterner, I’m down for anything with melted cheese, meat, or mayonnaise and while the cheesesteak I got from Jim’s (see… → Read More
I remember watching a behind-the-scenes-type show on Star Wars years ago where they dissected and said what everything inside Vader’s helmet did, but this was the first time I’ve ever seen it in person. Looks like a complicated process, huh? I wish this had been an interactive display that showed what every gear and pulley does, but it was still a neat display. → Read More
The Garrison Carida members of the 501st Stormtrooper Legion are a dedicated and crazy bunch, but in a good way. Aside from their normal appearances at events like this one at the FI, they also do a ton of community service around the area like handing out toys during the holidays and visiting sick little kids at local hospitals. It’s a tight knit group that makes all their own costumes and… → Read More

I know you can watch the video of the fight, but I thought I’d include the photos as well. These guys were really, really good and I could have sworn that the character actor playing Anakin was Hayden Chistensen. Enjoy the gallery. Be sure to stop by the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia and check out the exhibit for yourself. It runs until May 4th. Want to know why it ends that day? May… → Read More

This is for the hardcore Star Wars buffs in the audience. Do you notice anything wrong with this picture? No? How about the Jedi on the far left? Still not getting it? Well, you’re not much of a Star Wars fan then. Heh. See, the supposed Jedi on the left has a purple lightsaber and that’s a big no-no. Sam Jackson, who played by Mace Windu, personally requested a purple lightsaber… → Read More
