You can get this functionality in an iPhone app (onOne), but it probably kills your battery, and besides: in photography, more accessories equals more glory. So check out this little doodad — it hooks onto your camera’s hot shoe and beams a signal to a little LCD monitor, where you can adjust aperture, take an exposure, and so on.

The only trouble is that it doesn’t seem widely available, and I’m not really sure what the resolution is. The website claims 960×240, but that can’t be right. Looks like a handy and simple little thing, though at $335 it isn’t cheap. There are surely other versions of this that I’ve just never sought out — maybe it’s time for a little light googling.

The very useful-looking DSLR Camera Remote app for iPhone has finally (finally) been updated to version 1.1. Those of you who haven’t been following along wouldn’t know that this is a major release, adding Nikon support to the mix. That’s great news for Nikon owners, obviously, but Canon shooters like myself also will find an improved interface, bugfixes, and new features. And if you’re really out of the loop (god!!! Why am I even talking to you!), this is an app that lets you control and shoot your DSLR from afar, pretty much controlling every aspect of the shot and getting a live preview if you have that set up right. You can check out all the new features in 1.1 here (it was finalized a few weeks ago). The developers note that they’ve gotten word just a little bit early, so they’ll have a link to the new App Store entry soon. In the meantime, you can wait till we’ve got the link (I’ll update this post) or you can just search for the app tomorrow, when it’s sure to have gone live.

The boys at onOne are still on track for a July release of their popular DSLR remote control app and with v1.1 comes a new UI. As you can see, controls have been moved around to make things a bit more accessible and user friendly. Other than a UI update and support for Nikon DSLRs, onOne is mum on what else we can expect from the update app.

Please add support for Pentax, onOne. Please?

Now here's an app many creative professionals might find useful. The DSLR Remote iPhone app lets you trigger your camera's shutter, adjust almost any of its settings, and view photos it's taken. The catch, unfortunately, is that the camera needs to be wired to a computer for this to work. Even so, I can think of plenty of situations where this could come in handy, though admittedly there are few where a professional would absolutely need it. Still, the more tools you have, the more versatile your whole setup is, and who wouldn't want to snap pics via their iPhone anyway?

Now here’s an app many creative professionals might find useful. The DSLR Remote iPhone app lets you trigger your camera’s shutter, adjust almost any of its settings, and view photos it’s taken. The catch, unfortunately, is that the camera needs to be wired to a computer for this to work. Even so, I can think of plenty of situations where this could come in handy, though admittedly there are few where a professional would absolutely need it. Still, the more tools you have, the more versatile your whole setup is, and who wouldn’t want to snap pics via their iPhone anyway?

It even works with Live View, so you essentially have yourself a gigantic spy camera if you need it. It’s available now at the App Store in two flavors: Lite for $2 and Pro for $10. I’d spring for Pro, because that lets you do the more advanced adjustments and use Live View.

There are plans for a Nikon version but they’re still testing that. Patience, grasshopper.

It’s not out yet but there’s a new app that lets you take photos from your EOS Canon camera using your iPhone. You still have to connect the camera to your laptop via USB but the system transmits Live View video to the iPhone and then lets you take the snap at the decisive moment.

Okay, if you’re wondering how it works, here’s a quick run down.

 1. You need either an iPhone or an iPod Touch
2. You need a supported Canon EOS DSLR
3. A laptop or desktop computer running the free companion DSLR Remote Server software
4. A USB cable to connect your supported Canon EOS DSLR camera to the computer running the free server software

The DSLR Remote app running on your iPhone (or iPod Touch) communicates to the DSLR Remote Server software via a WIFI connection.

From your iPhone you can control settings such as shutter speed, aperture and white balance. You can of course fire the camera shutter as well. If you have a Canon EOS DSLR camera that supports Live View you can even get a live stream of the camera’s viewfinder on your iPhone.

It works with the following cameras: Digital Rebel XT, Rebel XTi, Rebel XS, Rebel XSi, 20D, 30D, 40D, 50D, 5D, 5D Mark II, 1D Mark II, Mark IIn, Mark III, 1Ds Mark II, Mark III.
