Oakley Could Be Cooking Up Smart Glasses To Take On Google’s Project Glass

oakleypatent

Back when rumors of Google’s fabled augmented-reality glasses began picking up steam, one of the most frequently repeated bits was that they bore a striking resemblance to (rather old) Oakley’s Thump mp3-friendly sunglasses. The concept that Google eventually revealed looked nothing like them, but it turns out Oakley may eventually throw their hat into the smart eyewear ring.

Those Oakley 3D Glasses Are Now Certified 3D Glasses

RealD has officially given the Oakley 3D glasses its nod of approval. The certification states that the Oakley 3D glasses will “complement and optimize the 3D entertainment experience for audiences all over the globe.” This is no doubt important to the dozen people who bought the 3D glasses for use in exclusively in the theater. Everyone else that simply jumped 3D fashion bandwagon… → Read More

Oakley Releases Special TRON 3D Glasses

Oakley and TRON, sitting in a tree, marketing synergistically. Oakley is “selling” $150 limited edition 3D glasses that are going to make your TRON:Legacy experience just about as amazing as it can be. That’s right: these are basically expensive versions of those cheap glasses you get at the theatre. Presumably the only time we’ll ever see these is when the stars wear them… → Read More

Bacon-themed Oakleys: better than wearing real bacon? (No.)

Here’s the thing. If you’re going bacon, you have to go all the way. Bacon-like has never been enough — and it never will be. This is why Bacon Bits will always outsell Fakin’ Bacon, and this is why it will always be better to fashion a pair of bacon goggles than wear a bacon-themed pair of Oakleys. → Read More

Oakley, Surfline launch free surf report app: Surf Report

I haven’t run into any surfers with iPhones, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t out there. Today, Oakley (the guys that make those hideous Thump sunglasses) and Surfline announced their free app: Surf Report. There’s only one other surf-forecasting app, GreenRoom Surf Forecasts, available today and it costs $2.99. It’s limited to spots in California, but you can get a seven-day forecast… → Read More

Oakley JK15 Split Thump: Please, just stop

I like the Oakley Thump MP3 line of sunglasses. I really do. Call me a dork, but the second edition worked very well and were really good for working out. Unfortunately, I think this ship has sailed in terms of usefulnacity vs. price and $569 for these Thumps with removable MP3 earpieces and 1GB is just wrong. Incidentally, the ones you see here are for Jamiroquai fans and only 500 will be made… → Read More

Oakley updates MP3 sunglasses for some reason

I’ve never actually seen anyone wear Oakley’s MP3 sunglasses in person. I’ve seen athletes wear them and I think Dog the Bounty Hunter wore them, but he’s been taken off the small screen for his racist remarks so he doesn’t count anymore. I think it’s a good idea, but why? Not everyone can pull off these sunglasses because they simply won’t fit your face properly. I guess there’s… → Read More

Oakley Announces Thump Pro

Oakley apparently didn’t get the memo that their MP3-playing sunglasses, known as the Thump, are a flop. They’re ugly, feel weird, and are costly. But lucky for us, Oakley isn’t going to let the man get them down. They’ve announced a November 17th release date for their new sunglasses, the Thump Pro. Thump Pro is designed for athletes and performance-demanding individuals, who need… → Read More
