The word is that customers have spoken and the response to the 3-tuner option has been so “favorable” that Arris is going with that option for every model. The cost will remain the same with the 3-tuner model going for $599, $100 more than the lesser model but it of course doesn’t require a monthly subscription plan. Amazon still has some of the 2-tuner models in stock, however, if you’re looking to join the Moxi party for a bit less.

The former Digeo has managed to stay busy despite going through an acquisition by Arris. The company just went live with a slew of updates that show the company is serious about the DVR game. First and foremost is a new HD DVR model. This boy is almost exactly like the current Moxi HD DVR except it comes equipped with three tuners that will allow you to record three separate stations at one time off of a single multi-stream Cable Card. Take that, TiVo.

The new three-tuner model is perfect for the somewhat new Moxi Mate that will soon be able to utilize the tuners in a Moxi HD DVR for live TV viewing. Picture this: you’re streaming a recording from your main Moxi HD DVR onto the Moxi Mate in your bedroom but the wife fails asleep. This means you’re no longer obligated to watch Gray’s Anatomy and instead of switching to your TV’s tuner, the Moxi Mate will act just like a full size Moxi HD DVR and stream content live from one of the free tuners located in the full size Moxi HD DVR. You can even change the channel, view the guide, and timeshift live TV all over magic of Ethernet.

Up to two Moxi Mates can connect to one three-tuner DVR but can access live TV only when the main Moxi has a tuner available. If the tuners are in use, the user will be notified of the conflict and given the option to cancel the recording to free up the tuner. The necessary Moxi Mate software update will be available within the coming weeks along with an update to the Moxi HD DVR that tweaks the menu structure a bit.

Of course the new three tuner Moxi HD DVR can do the standard DVR functions too. Except this model allows you to record on three stations while watching a previously recorded program.

With the new model comes price drops. The two-tuner HD DVR is now $499 down from $799 and the standalone Moxi Mate is $299 instead of $399. The three-tuner model is only available in a bundle pack with either one or two Moxi Mates for $799 and $999, respectively. Just like before, there is no monthly fee with any of these products.

Arris, and formerly, Digeo has been on a roll ever since the Moxi HD DVR was released last December. This is the 3rd straight quarter that the company has significantly updated its Moxi HD DVR product line. TiVo hasn’t done that in years.

Digeo just pushed the summer Moxi HD DVR update and I had to check it out. I had a few issues with the DVR after the last release that was supposed to be resolved. One, I hate the vertical channel guide bar thing and the summer update added a traditional grid guide. Two, the GUI was supposed to be faster now and require less button presses. Three, the player was finally suppose to be able to playback more video file formats like AVI and MKV.

Spoiler: Digeo fixed two out of the three issues mentioned above and ignored other glaring problems like the fantastically funny but also very offensive Porn search tool.

If you read my review of the Moxi HD DVR, you should know that I’m not a fan of the vertical bar channel guide. I think it’s a pain and doesn’t utilize the widescreen layout of an HDTV efficiently. But the summer update was supposed to add a grid guide and that was the first thing I checked out.

So I went to the settings, and sure enough it was enabled. I then quickly navigated to the Channel icon (and ignored the onscreen message about the grid guide in the settings menu) only to discover that damn vertical bar was still there. So this time when I went back to the settings, I actually read the message that explained the only way to access the grid guide was to hit the little square icon on the remote twice.

Yeah, so when you hit the Moxi button, you still have the vertical channel guide. When you navigate to the guide through anything else, you still have the vertical channel guide. The only way to get the grid guide – which looks like it was designed by an 8th grader btw – is to hit the little square icon on top of the remote twice. Dumb.

There is some good news though. This update does speed up the GUI a bit. It doesn’t lag like it did before, which is always nice. Also, when navigating the network shares, you no longer have to hit the back button twice. A single click to the left navigates the system down one step. Before the GUI would ask you if you wanted to step back even though you hit the back button. This was a huge pain if you where several directories into a network share.

But – this is rich – now when navigating the network, the GUI asks you if you want to enter the folder you just clicked. Let me you walk you through this. I select PlayOn Media Server and click OK. The GUI then asks me if I really want to enter that folder, which I then must confirm by clicking OK again. Then I select Videos, which prompts the same confirm screen that I have to say OK again to. Then I can select the genre of movie I want to watch. But don’t forget about that confirmation screen which wants to make sure that you really want to enter the folder you just selected.

I don’t get it, folks. Navigating a menu should be as easy as possible with no extra steps. I think the purpose of this confirmation screen is to allow users to add the folder to a favorites menu, but there must be a better way of doing things. The current method is downright aggravating.

Just as Diego promised though, the Moxi HD DVR can playback more video file formats including AVI and MKV. Although, don’t expect to be able to watch any MKVs though as it seems that the speed is too slow and the playback is very choppy on larger files. AVIs playback fine although this is something that PlayOn resolved a few weeks ago. But now you can use any DLNA service including TVersity and Twonky.

I still have one major issue with the Moxi HD DVR and that’s the search tool. As a family man, I really don’t want my child seeing descriptions of 18 Petite N Creamy, 18 Year Old Dream Teens, or any of the hundred other programs shown in the search tool. The problem is that these stations are available from Comcast, and even though I don’t subscribe to them (promise), all the programs show up in alphabetical order starting with numbers. This is a major problem I noted in my review that still hasn’t been addressed. The search tool should not show you programs on stations that aren’t available, pornographic in nature or not.

I would grade the Moxi summer update as a C. It’s not failing, but it’s also not excelling. These tiny fixes and poor implementation of a grid guide probably could have been rolled out without any fanfare. Don’t get me wrong, this $800 HD DVR is dramatically better than anything cable offers, but it still doesn’t reach the level of usability or function set by TiVo years ago.

Also, now the Moxi supports Switched Digital Video. Certain cable companies have adopted this format on new stations, and even the CableCard doesn’t pick them up. Now the Moxi can, just like TiVo. All you need is the SDV tuning adapter from your content provider if you indeed require one.

Digeo has rolled out more video codec supports for the Moxi HD DVR. The company is specifically not listing which formats the Moxi HD DVR now support, but it seems like most H.264 and even MKV containers should now work – even though officially Digeo hasn’t said this. At least the company is addressing what was one of my biggest complaints previously.

The summer update also adds compatibility with LaCie 4big Quadra 6 TB drive via the rear eSATA port. Do you know how much HD programming can fit onto a 6TB drive? 1000 hours. That’s a lot.

So the Moxi Mate. This is designed to be a second room streaming device. You’re limited to only one per full size Moxi HD DVR though. The little fanless device allows you to stream all the content from the full size to the second room. In addition to the remote content, the Moxi Mate can also access all the network content via the DLNA network and PlayOn software. However, a person cannot tune in stations nor schedule recordings from the Moxi Mate.

The Moxi Mate will cost $399 retail, but is available in a $1000 package that includes the $799 Moxi HD DVR. Expect it to be available on Moxi.com tonight and on Amazon by Friday.

The software should start hitting Moxi HD DVRs later today and is expected to be complete later this week.

But that’s not why I’m excited. I’m stoked that this update finally, finally brings .avi and .mkv support to the Moxi HD DVR. If you’ve followed my coverage of the TiVo-competitor, you should know that the lack of support of those file extensions was one of my biggest complaints against the DVR. But MediaMall has stepped up where Digeo dropped the ball.

So far I have played around with the updated feature – that also happens to be in beta mode – for a few minutes on the Moxi HD DVR and it seems to work as advertised – both .avi and .mkv files play. I have always ran DLNA services including TVersity and the previous version of PlayOn off of a Windows Home Server, but this time around, the Intel Atom-powered CPU didn’t have enough juice to transcode and stream the files without lagging a bit. I’ve chalked the performance issues up to the software still being in beta for now. The service ran just fine on my quad core desktop though. I didn’t have any issues at all.

What’s so strange about this feature suddenly being available on the Moxi HD DVR is that I tried almost every DLNA software listed here before chatting with Digeo only to find out that it couldn’t be done. The first couple of techs and reps I spoke with told me it had something to do with the Broadcom chip used in the DVR not liking those file types, and the CEO later explained he personally had choose to focus on other areas of development before fixing that issue.

All that matters now is that the Moxi HD DVR can finally playback all the content stored on a local network, which is a huge step in the right direction. The DVR still has major issues to address, but I finally feel confident enough because of this feature alone to upgrade my recommendation from “Wait until the bugs are worked out” to “Buy if you’re okay with the $799 price and lack of ATSC tuner.”

PlayOn is normally $39.99, but it can be had for only $19.99 until June 31 with the coupon code PLAYON1999. Also, MediaMall is allowing everyone to try the software for 14-days for free – even those that have tried it before.

Widgets and gadgets are the latest trend to hit HDTVs. Vizio is upping the game by equipping its soon-to-be-released HDTVs with an impressive suite of Internet applications and video streaming sites. So much so, that this portfolio will place them on top of many people’s wish list as these TVs will be better equipped than a TiVo or even Windows Media Server.

Forget about Vizio being a mid-tier, Walmart brand. These features might make some people question why they pay a monthly fee for a TiVo. Owners will be able to stream content from Revision3, Showtime and Pandora for free, while also able to subscribe to Vudu, Netflix, Blockbuster OnDemand, Amazon Video On Demand and Rhapsody. Plus, the sets are able to work with Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and the Yahoo Widgets Engine.

All this content should be easily controlled and managed with a Bluetooth remote that features a slide-down QWERTY keyboard. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing this feature finally becoming available. Hopefully similar remotes will soon be available from TiVo and Moxi as there is nothing more annoying than typing via an on-screen keyboard.

The HDTVs connect to the local network via either 802.11n or wired networking. There is no word on DLNA support, but we wouldn’t be surprised if that finds its way into spec list.

Expect the new XVT series to be available next month and start at $749 for a 32-inch. The series continues up in price as LED-backing and 240Hz options are added. The top of the line VF551XVT has both options as well as five HDMI ports for $2,199 and will be available this September.

We’re just hoping that the picture matches the impressive feature list…

He brought up in our 45 minute conversation that there will be an update coming this summer that will address some of the usability concerns that annoyed the hell out of me in my review. No longer will you have to confirm twice that you want to watch a program on the guide. Other small issues will be addressed, but I’m hoping this update will pave way for more built-in apps including one for viewing online media.

Gudorf indicated that they are working on a true online media app instead of relying on the lackluster PlayOn DLNA service. He didn’t seem to agree when I mentioned that Hulu would be the TiVo-killing app. But maybe I’m wrong so I’m asking all of you.

Think the world has enough media streamers? Hells no. There is definitely room for the AMEX DIGITAL Venic-V38HD with it’s 2TB storage. The trapezoidal media player does about everything. It streams all major file formats off a local network (including AVI’s, Moxi), plays media files off USB drives, has a DVD/CD player – that’s about it. The only thing missing is a Blu-ray drive really.

We just wish we could get a peek at that user interface. That tends to be the sore spot on some of these media players. The hardware is solid and complete, but the user interface was developed at the last minute. Maybe someone can hack Boxee onto the player.

All you have to do is fill out a form to be entered in one of the giveaways. The other giveaway is a bit more involved, but also includes a 500GB external hard drive and an extra $1000 bucks for your home theater setup. Both include a one-year Rhapsody Unlimited membership and a PlayOn license. I wasn’t a big fan of the DVR, but free is free. What do you have to lose?

We hear that the program will not be available to everyone initially. Until some legal issues are ironed out, 13 states and the DC region will only be able to purchase the box with the streight $799 pricing.

Sure, TiVo’s implementation of media streaming is far from perfect. The system actually copies the video file onto the TiVo hard drive, which is annoying but supports nearly every file format including the two in question here.

The Moxi is a DLNA compliant device but that doesn’t mean that it will stream AVI or MKV file formats as I just found out. I’ve tried TwonkyMedia, Tversity, and Windows Media Connect without any luck. It’s kind of a moot anyway as a tech support guy kindly pointed me to the user guide (pdf link – search for WMV) where it doesn’t list those file formats anyway. He also confirmed numerous times – I was being thorough – that the Moxi HD DVR does not support AVI streaming in anyway, shape, or form.

Two of the listed supported file formats stream fine: WMV and MPEG-2. However, I couldn’t get any MPEG-4 files to stream. Honestly, I only have two files of that format anyway ’cause everything is in AVI or MKV format so it could have been me.

There is no reason why this gigantic oversight cannot be corrected by Moxi with a simple update. No one would convert their entire library of videos to WMVs when a TiVo or hundreds of other devices support the file formats fine. It doesn’t matter how slick or cool the Moxi looks on an HDTV when basic functionality isn’t there.

This is big, Moxi. Fix it.

I finally received and installed a Moxi HD DVR after some shipping issues with Fedex . I have to say though, I’m not that impressed two days in. The company screams on the official website that the Moxi is superior to TiVo in almost every way – seriously, it does – but besides the pretty eye-candy GUI, I wouldn’t call everything superior. The Moxi has some sweet extra features that TiVo doesn’t, but I feel like the core functionality of watching and recording television isn’t all that better.

I have two TiVo HD boxes in my house. I like ‘em. The interface is outdated, but it works well. Big props to the Moxi as it looks so much better in HD than the TiVo. That is probably ’cause the interface was designed this decade rather than during the Clinton administration.

However, the GUI doesn’t take advantage of an HDTVs real estate properly when surfing the channels. The layout is a vertical bar, which fits great in a SDTV but leaves a lot of unused space that could show more info on an HDTV. This complaint could be that I cannot stand the vertical channel bar and its limited info. TiVo offers a similar guide layout, but also allows for a grid type display, which shows future events on numerous stations simultaneously.

There are some cool features built into the Moxi. Superticker I found to be convenient. It displays a small ticker at the bottom of the TV that is easily navigated for sports, weather, and news info without taking away too much from the TV program. The Flickr support is superb as was the Moxi HD setup which only took a few minutes.

The TiVo HD XL  is still hooked up to the TV and is just one click away on the remote, but I’ll give this Moxi box a fair chance before coming to any solid conclusions. So far I have to say that I’m not as impressed as I thought I would be.

PlayOn notably brings Hulu and Netflix support to the DVR. It’s too bad that the DVR doesn’t get native support, but at least Digeo is throwing in the $40 PC software. Rhapsody has also been added, including the free 30-day trial of the music streaming service.

The DLNA update brings a simple browser interface to the box for streaming network local content to the box. Now, this isn’t a Boxee or XBMC type interface, but it essentially gets the same results. Expect a very simple file system structure-type layout. At least it still brings the Wolverine workprint to the big screen though.

Oh, there is more. Flickr support gets added in a swanky “Mosaic” view. Digeo even threw in a taste of home automation with Z-Wave devices and various IP cams. Plus, there is MoxiNet that lets you bookmark your fav websites – like CG – and browse them on the DVR.

Overall the huge update is a step in the right direction for the $800 DVR. The high price tag for the 500GB DVR must be a big turn off when the similarly priced TiVo comes pack’n a 1TB storage system. Yeah, it’s got a monthly fee, but even 1TB isn’t enough storage in high-def land. If Digeo can develop a XBMC-type media browser for network-stored files, the Moxi will win over a lot more buyers. That’s what I need.
