A few years ago these guys took MWC by storm, promising a tiny phone that fit into different sleeves that offered various functions like game playing and movie playback. Why not have one phone that’s good at all of those and didn’t use the sleeves? We still don’t know, but Modu is still kicking and they just released the Modu T.

The T is a Java-powered 3G miniphone that is apparently the “lightest phone in the world,” not that people have been concerned about weight thus far. Regardless, it appears to be available overseas and an upcoming Android model, called the W, should be considerably more interesting.

Regardless, you’ll probably never see it in the wild so enjoy looking at it here.

modu introduces modu T, a 3.5G touch phone which was awarded a Guinness World Record for being the lightest touch phone in the world. We have undergone a difficult time in which we have learned, innovated and grew stronger and I truly believe that we are on the right track to becoming a leading company in its field. The mobile industry is considerable in size and is currently undergoing changes which would allow for companies like modu to enter the market and be worthy players in this industry.

modu T is unique in its modularity, enabling connectivity with the different “fy” devices, which allow it to have additional features and functionalities which extend the user experience to higher levels. This modularity allows each user to enjoy advanced functionalities which are specifically relevant to each such user, while enabling specific compatibility to such user’s changing needs and preferences. The connectivity to the “fy” devices is done through a unique technology developed by modu.

The modu T “fy” family of devices, which enhances and complete the user experience, includes:

Israeli modular phone manufacturer, Modu, looks to be shaking things up with its next modular gadget – Modu 2. In a recent interview with TechRadar, Modu CEO, Dov Moran, has let (some of) the beans spill on Modu’s ambitions for its next generation of devices. For anyone who is unfamiliar, Modu’s modular ecosystem includes various “jackets” which “create a new look and provide added functionality” to the underlying Modu phone. In the same way that you and I change our clothes based on our plans, Modu’s phone can change jackets for different functions, such as playing MP3s, taking digital photos, or at its simplest, changing its outward appearance with a dressy “suit” jacket. Despite the relatively young company’s inability to launch non-3G products in big-time markets, like the UK, Modu seems more determined than ever to push its modular phone platform forward. To better position its future lineup for more wide spread adoption, Moran spoke about some of the necessary updates needed to compete in the growing mobile space: “Our second [Modu device] will be a touchscreen, a very unique concept, and will justify its label of being innovative. It will be a 3.5G product, but will also have a number of other features.” Thus, it comes as no big surprise that along with the improved hardware Modu is also working on bringing Android into its “wardrobe.” Moran explained: “We’re also planning to have a jacket based on Android, which will enable programming capability [on the Modu unit], but these plans are too early to expose.” If Modu can successfully integrate Google’s mobile OS with some new and improved hardware, Modu 2 might be just what the doctor large mobile market ordered. Well, now they do.

At the heart of the Modu ecosystem is a small modular mobile phone (the lightest one available according to the Guiness Book of World Records) that comes with complete mobile functionality but also doubles as both a music player and a mass storage device (2 GB). The modu phone boasts a seven-key keypad to perform basic functions even without a jacket, but it’s really the jackets that make the product unique.

Straight from the press release, the freshly unveiled Modu jacket line-up includes:

Night jacket: inspired by the nightlife scene, this jacket includes futuristic styling with an edgy keypad, flashing lights, night mode imaging and a unique graphical user interface

Street-art jacket: capturing the expressive and vibrant street art scene, this jacket fea tures stereo speak ers and dedicated music keys for a powerful music experience

Classic jacket: designed to fit the everyday needs of a modern lifestyle, this jacket carries all essential mobile communication features with an air of elegance and fine taste

Express jacket: this jacket transforms the modu phone and user interface with a rain bow of fun, playful flavors

Modu, the heavily-funded Israel-based modular phone manufacturer that enables you to slip a light mobile device into a variety of so-called “jackets” (think music players, other cellphones, car stereos, digital cameras, etc.), is prepping its big commercial launch for this year by unveiling its family of phones at the upcoming Mobile World Congress. The actual sales for the device will start at the beginning of next quarter.

Modu started teasing everyone in January last year, and revealed what it had in store a month after. Crunchgear’s John Biggs dubbed it cool but flawed, but this was all way before the company ever had something to show for its promises and – meanwhile – over $85 million in venture capital funding.

Pictures:

More jackets will be announced in the course of this year.

The jury is still out if Modu is onto something here, but it’s refreshing to see a company in the mobile industry risk such a bold move and truly try to innovate the space. I’m curious to find out what else they’ll announce at the Mobile World Congress; they’re promising more news on “global distribution of the Modu phone and jackets, with a significant initial order; partnership agreements; new product news; and manufacturing and production capabilities”.

Modu was founded in 2007 by Dov Moran, the inventor of the USB Flash Drive (he was the founder, Chairman and CEO of M-systems, acquired by SanDisk Corp for $1.6B at the end of 2006), and you can hear him explain the product in the interview embedded below.

Clearly things are not all rosy at Modu, but the company now has some more cash to pursue its very risky mobile play. If anyone has any further info, please post it in the comments below.

Modu, an Israeli startup founded in 2007, is going to be adding $100 million to the $20 million in venture capital they’ve already raised, says Israeli newspaper The Globes.
[photopress:scaled.IMG_1205.JPG,full,pp_image] I was pretty down on Modu, which is essentially a module-based GSM system that consists of a tiny handset — no bigger than a business card and about a quarter-inch thick — and a bunch of “mates” or “jackets” that wrap around the phone to do different things. Now that I’ve seen it up close and talked to the founder, I’m a bit more interested yet still reluctant to state that this will be an absolute success. The idea is this: Modu makes the modules and sells an SDK to manufacturers like Bosch and Magellan, two actual partners. The partners write a few GSM hooks into their firmware and to make calls, pick up SMSes, and get data. You buy a module and two jackets for about 200 euro in shops and then buy additional jackets — media players, GPS devices, vibrators, etc. — as needed. [photopress:scaled.IMG_1203.JPG,thumb,pp_image][photopress:scaled.IMG_1204.JPG,thumb,pp_image][photopress:scaled.IMG_1201.JPG,thumb,pp_image][photopress:scaled.IMG_1206.JPG,thumb,pp_image][photopress:scaled.IMG_1202.JPG,thumb,pp_image][photopress:scaled.IMG_1199.JPG,thumb,pp_image][photopress:scaled.IMG_1197.JPG,thumb,pp_image] My concern is this: the market is ruled by handset manufacturers who will not cede territory to a wee start-up. The buy-in for the consumer is fairly large. I have to invest in the phone and the jackets and hope that the company doesn’t go belly-up in the next few years and that partners keep releasing jackets. As a manufacturer, however, I have the chance to make and sell all my same products but easily, and without FCC approval, add the powers of a cellphone to my gear. I could add Modu compatibility to almost anything, provided I follow the recommendations and get certified by Modu. My time to market is about four months rather than two years. They expect product to ship early next year and they already have carriers in Italy, Russia, and Israel interested in the product. Founder Dov Moran knows the industry — he was one of the grandpaters of the thumb drive world — and he has a good team. I only fear that skittish consumers will forgo buying a tiny phone with no track record and a bunch of CE stuff that only works with that phone. Then, add in the possibility of doing this all over Bluetooth or near-field communications, without a physical module, and you’ve got some heavy competition. I accept the the concept but I worry that this won’t get far past this initial stage. Only time will tell. Product Page

Modu, the mysterious modular cell phone doohickey that we told you about a couple weeks ago, “is set to announce Thursday that it will launch the phone, also called Modu, on Oct. 1 with Telecom Italia SpA in Italy, OAA Vimpel Communications in Russia and Cellcom Israel Ltd,” according to the Associated Press. The Modu system consists of a small iPod Nano-sized module that works like a very basic cell phone and can be popped in and out of “jackets” that allow it to do bigger and better things. For instance, you can have a jacket in your car, a jacket in your office, a music playing jacket, and more. Modu founder Dov Moran expects Modu to sell for roughly $280, which includes the main module and two jackets. This price can and likely will be subsidized by the various carriers “down to free or almost free with a two-year contract.” What’s interesting is that the jacket concept can be approached differently depending on the country. Modu founder Dov Moran said in an interview that the Italian carrier is excited about the concept because it can make cell phones more like fashion, tempting consumer to update their looks every few months… The Russian carrier wants an emphasis on kids, who are the big growth market for cell phones there, so Modu is making jackets with cartoon themes for them. The Israeli carrier wanted a cell phone for soldiers, so Modu is making a rugged, green jacket with a built-in flashlight. Other jackets could focus on music, coming with pre-loaded tunes, or have full keyboards for texting. Universal Music Group said it is looking at making jackets that center on its artists. Moran says that Modu won’t be able to launch here in the US until 2009 at the earliest. Also, the initial Modu offering uses painfully slow GPRS data but the company is already at work on an HSDPA version so maybe that’s the version we’ll see here.
Looks like our own John Biggs will be eating his hat very soon. Thanks to a stealthy tipster we have some info on Modu just for you. Chances are we’ll see an official announcement and a hands on with the device at 3GSM. Modu is a device with the absolute bare minimum in terms of cellular telephony. It can make a call, send SMS and hold a contact list. Its small size is due mainly to the fact that it holds just these most basic telephony capabilities. Think of it as an expanded SIM card. WiFi is not included, storage may not be either. This is where 3rd parties come in. The idea is that the user will carry this core device and stick it into a variety of “skins”. These can be anything… For example, a camera that with the Modu core can send pics directly to your mom. The “skins” will cost less because they could be produced without telephony functionality. This could take the iPod accessory ecosystem and the concept of the iPod tax to a whole new level and platform. Modu

In an obvious attempt to generate buzz, mobile stealth startup Modu is circulating the teaser video below about its soon-to-launch product. (Perhaps in advance of a launch at Demo next week the Mobile World Congress in February?). We’ll bite and help spread the video because of who is behind the startup. CEO Dov Moran sold his previous company—M-Systems, which pioneered the concept of the USB flash drive—to SanDisk for $1.6 billion in 2006. Now what’s Moran up to at Modu? The company recently changed its name from InFone Tech, an Israeli startup that raised $20 million in June, 2007 from Gemini Israel Funds and Genesis Partners. Since Modu is inviting speculation as to what it is all about, here is mine: it looks to me like a mobile device, or possibly a broader platform, based on a removable flash drive that can be swapped from your cell phone to your car to your MP3 player to your laptop. Taking your music with you in a Modu flash drive would be one obvious application, but maybe the startup has grander ambitions than just music. Can you figure out what Modu does from the video below? Update: I’ve received more information that suggests this is a cell phone/flash drive. That is, it has cellular capabilities and you can store your music, pictures, videos, and contacts on it. Plug it into your car and it becomes your phone and music player on the go. That device you see at the end of the video is the default device that you snap the flash drive/phone into. It has a one-inch screen is supposedly very power-efficient. CrunchBase Information Modu Information provided by CrunchBase
