MacRumors is reporting that the new MacBook will be dubbed “Air” and that it will have a 13.3-inch screen, external optical drive, but it won’t be a sub-notebook, rather, just a thin one. 9 to 5 goes on to speculate that Air implies WiMAX will come to the new notebooks or to AppleTV. → Read More
PHOTO CREDIT: Ars Technica Ars Technica got a snap of the first banner to go up for Macworld 2008. It says, “There’s something in the air.” What could it mean? My guess is that Apple is definitely starting its own airline to compete with JetBlue, Virgin, and SkyBus. Your thoughts? Macworld.Ars: First banner up at Moscone Center [Ars Technica] → Read More
Apparently I should be speaking with friends back in Oregon more often. I always knew my friends or their parents worked at Intel, but haven’t thought about ever asking them which groups they work in. Yeah, I know, it’s pretty lame of me. So I did some poking and prodding and promised some things I probably shouldn’t have to get this info, but I think it’s worth it in the end. → Read More
The iPhone will soon join us in the 20th century by offering cut and paste. Sources at MacScoop are saying that the new firmware will offer copy and paste functionality as well as faux-GPS, the ability to send mass SMSs, and a multi-page home screen. Macworld 2008 is shaping up to be the hottest ticket this month. Quite possibly rivaling CES for press coverage. Why? Besides the announcement of a sub-notebook and/or multi-touch notebook, iTunes movie rentals, and HD video editing software we may see a shift in the format wars. Apple has remained quiet on the subject in terms of hardware by not picking one side of the other to support, though we know it would be Blu-ray for any number of reasons, but this Macworld may change that and possibly shift the war in favor of Blu-ray. If Shaw Wu, an analyst from American Technology Research, is to be believed along with his sources then Apple will announce that Macs will begin shipping with Blu-ray support. He attempts to step back from this claim and say they might throw in a combo drive, but I don’t see that happening. Apple supporting a Microsoft backed product? Nah. Who really knows, though? We’ll find out on the 15th. Apple set to ship Macs with Blu-ray support – report [Apple Insider] → Read More
What if I told you that now even Popular Mechanics is jumping on the “Apple will introduce a tablet Mac at Macworld” bandwagon? What then? What if I told you that they also have a completely fake and not-even-good-looking video of the device? Then you’d have absolutely nothing else to impress you for the rest of the year, and for that you’d be sorry. But don’t take my word for it, head on over the Popular Speculation Mechanics and have a gander for thyself, and then come back here and tell us where you think it scores on the BS-ometer. Not the fact that Apple’s working on such a device, I think they are, but that it’d be this fugly. Macworld 2008 Prediction: Apple’s MacBook Plus Tablet Laptop [PopMech] → Read More
Part of Macworld next month will be a thing called the Final Cut Pro group, just for you video guys. And we’ve been tracking rumors that there will be a special surprise on the 16th. We’ve done some digging, and we’re fairly sure that this surprise has something to do with the Red One camera and Final Cut’s integration with Redcode. In reality it’ll be an update to the Final Cut Studio suite with native Redcode support, as well as support for third party video cards (yes, including nVidia). For those not in the uber-geeky look, Redcode is the name of Red’s editing workflow software. Since the Red One can shoot at up to 4k, there needs to be a way to edit by proxy, as editing RAW 4k footage would be a task for even the largest grids out there. Redcode allows you to edit within Final Cut at a much lower resolution, and translates the edits to the final cut, if you’ll forgive the phrasing. There’s also a possibility it’s related to Red’s new “pocket professional” HD camera, code named Scarlet. Rumor has that Scarlet would debut at NAB, but if working with Apple is going well, there’s a possibility that it will be shown off to pros at Macworld. There will be a few other surprises, but these are the things the Red users have been salivating over, and we hope this really is what all the fuss is over. → Read More
I’m not saying people will be rushing to pick up a Zen or anything, but it should be noted that Creative has announced the world’s first flash-based 32GB PMP and it’s the size of a CC. What else does $378 get you? That’s not a type typo, either, it’s $378. That’s cheap. Super cheap for 32GB of flash memory. A 2.5-inch display, 30 hours of music playback, five hours of video playback and an SD card slot. Holy balls! Could the 32GB iPod Touch be on its way? Maybe, just maybe, at MacWorld in January? Please say it’s true, Apple. Press Release → Read More
Only an Apple rumor with absolutely no legs could trump the Microsoft Zune announcement we’re expecting to hear tonight. But wait, it is just the Zune 2. In any case, the source code on the Apple iPhone Feedback Page seems to have unveiled a secret. What’s the secret? Oh, I don’t know. Maybe the iPhone Extreme, biatches. Who really knows what that means, if anything, but all fingers point to a 16GB, 3G and GPS-enabled iPhone in February. Duh. We know the 16GB iPhone will be announced at MacWorld. You’d have to be living under a rock not to know that. We’ll see about GPS and 3G. If the 16GB iPhone is not announced at MacWorld in January then I’ll eat my hat on camera because I’ll be there. Oops iPhone Extreme coming? [9to5Mac] → Read More
