They aren’t producing that many CD players these days, but that’s not the only reason the U-K525LT, announced [JP] by Kenwood for the Japanese market today, stands out. The other is that it has a nice wooden casing, made of African Mutenye teak. → Read More
The iPod Classic is one of those Mac products that, like the Mac mini, is constantly rumored to be facing its imminent demise. But, the 160 GB classic still hangs in there — its magnetic drive and scroll wheel offering the capacity that none of its flash-based siblings can’t even hold a candle to.
A reader told MacRumors that he received an email from Steve Jobs in response to a frantic request not to discontinue the iPod Classic. “We have no plans to,” Steve allegedly responded in a one-sentence reply via email. While it does sound legitimate, like with all reported Steve Jobs email responses, it should be taken with a grain of salt.
Are you ready for some excitement this fine morning? Apple has something special for you if you recently purchased a 6th gen Nano. What is it? I won’t tell until you click through!
Aw, heck, I’ll just tell you.
With iPod software update version 1.1 for iPod nano (6th generation), you will be able to:
Completely turn off the iPod, rather than just put the device to sleep.
Control music or radio playback using the Sleep/Wake button without having to look at the device.
Another day, another Kickstarter project. This one is a little iPod Nano dock that looks like a Glade Plug-In. It plugs right into the wall and then you pop the Nano on top. An internal hollow amplifies the sound and, well, that’s it. → Read More
The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library has recently undergone a $15 million tech renovation. The technology in the library is pretty impressive: 180 video screens, two teleprompters, a green screen and 250 iPod touches have been added to make things interesting.
The iPod touches will be used to guide visitors through the library, with audio narration as people move around. Also, the iPods will allow guests to take video and pictures to remember the experience and share how cultured you are on Facebook and Twitter. How fun! → Read More
Apple has quietly made a change to its repair policy regarding the liquid contact indicators, or LCI. You may remember last years lawsuit surrounding the issue. Perhaps that had something to do with it. → Read More
It’s not much of a hack – JWhelton simply removed an app and looked at the underlying OS – but this is proof of concept stuff that shows that the iPod Nano is essentially a stripped-down iOS device with severe limitations. → Read More
Is it just me, or is this iPod watchband thing getting old? Jobs makes one off-hand comment during a product announcement and suddenly a cottage industry pops up. → Read More
When the first iPod Nano watch straps appeared on the scene in September, I was non-plussed. I’ve seen plenty of wrist-mounted MP3 players, phones, and other junk to understand that anything you wear on your wrist and still have to connect a pair of headphones to is bad news. In general, you look goofy and feel goofier. But there was something about the Nano watch. Maybe it was because Apple made it abundantly clear that this wasn’t a watch. They made it hard to read the time – you have to press a button every time you want to see the clock – and they added a clip to suggest you should strap this to your jacket and not your wrist. But by gum I wanted to try the Nano watch. → Read More
Popular cartoon cat Hello Kitty is getting another gadget treatment. This time, it’s a super-cute speaker dock for the iPod or iPhone, offered by a Japanese company called CAV [JP]. The dock is an update to a very similar model CAV started offering in August. → Read More
This probably isn’t up your alley if you’re into listening to really awesome, fairly loud music all the time, but if you rely on your iPod or iPhone and don’t need a lot of volume, the Koostik might be your style.
It’s based on similar principles as acoustic guitars and other wood instruments: sound is channeled from where it is emitted from the phone to those big holes there, where it comes out slightly more… woody.
I don’t know what else to call it. → Read More
People have been remarking on how “watches are dying.” Referring to the fact that some people are choosing their mobile phones over watches. I say that these people probably didn’t have very nice watches to begin with, but that is beside the point. The point is why is it that the iPod Nano comes out, has a time function that displays an analog clock, and the geek world that is so convinced they no longer need watches, clamor to get the thing on their wrist? Isn’t that just a bit ironic? → Read More
While I rarely am able to get out to tape Dead shows anymore – what with most of the the band-members being dead themselves – this would have been a great help back when I was shipping reel-to-reels all over the country with little notes saying “Check out Ripple on this one. Man, you can hear Jerry’s stomach rub up against the mic stand.” It’s basically a stereo mic that connects to the iPod Touch/iPhone port and allows you to record in rich, beautiful stereo. → Read More
Have you been asking “How can I attach my iPad to a comical-looking speaker dock so I can, presumably, leave said iPad and dock on a very large table?” If you haven’t, why not? Bang & Olufsen, the rich man’s Bose, just released this massive dock for the iPad, allowing you to connect and play music and media from the iPad. → Read More
Of all the annoyances in my life, the one I deal with most regularly has to be the untangling of headphone wires. Several times a day I reach into my pocket and pull out a wad of cords that look as if they have been intentionally tangled up by some sort of pocket gnome. It drives me insane.
Wireless earphones are nothing new, but the best ones usually don’t fit in your pocket: the number one requirement of earphones for me. So I stick with the kind that come with my iStuff. But if 9to5Mac’s sources are correct, those may be getting a major overhaul soon. → Read More
I just bought my sister an iPod Nano and she really seems to like it. However, I don’t know how much she’d like a fake iPod Nano from the Shanzai markets. This wee fake comes in two sizes, 1.5 or 1.8 inches, and even comes in multiple colors. No pricing, but given my experience with Chinese junk I wouldn’t recommend picking it up. → Read More
The original iPod Nano watch was a little raw, and the follow-up from Incipio wasn’t much of an improvement. And let’s be honest, this new one isn’t going to win any awards either. But at least if you want to embarrass yourself publicly, you have more options than ever now. → Read More
Good news for iOS users: versatile video app VLC has been submitted to the App Store as a universal app, and I see no reason why it should be rejected. Expect to join your iPad brethren in playing a variety of video files without the need to jailbreak or part with your hard-earned gold pieces. → Read More
As someone who ostensibly tries to keep fit, I’ve found the best way to pretend to lose weight is to fiddle around with iPhone apps during my workout. First, it reduces the mind-crushing pain of exercise and allows me to go to a place in myself where I can avoid the boredom of exertion. To that end I decided to test out the new Nike+ GPS app alongside an old favorite, RunKeeper. Both apps have their pluses and minuses. Clearly RunKeeper is aimed squarely at the professional or at least obsessive runner, while the Nike+ software is aimed at a more casual user. Both have their value in the training arsenals of the average runner, and many of the hardware-specific features of Nike+ have been stripped out of the new GPS version, thereby putting both apps on equal footing. → Read More
The Paris Motor show is going on now. The usual car unveilings are a given, but also the shows are becoming a place for automakers to showcase and release exciting new tech. Take BMW for example, they are known around the globe for making the “ultimate driving machines.” Now, they are entering the realm of being the ultimate connectivity machine. → Read More
