There are rumors going around right now that Sony is going to make a play for IMAX. Since IMAX is a major (so to speak) venue for 3D films, it makes some sense, and the sale would put Sony in control of a large amount of high-profile theaters around the country. How does that sound to you? Not so good? Yeah, same here.

Actually, I doubt it would make too much difference; it’s not like Sony theaters would fail to show movies you wanted to see. The deal would be a good one for IMAX, with the offer rumored to be $40/share and the company currently valued at around $26/share. It’s all unconfirmed, but it would make some sense. Sony likes to put itself in positions of power in the distribution structure, and the “last mile” of having control over IMAX would be a coup for them.

IIMAX, the company that makes really big movie screens and projectors to match, is winning the movie wars. The company hit earnings of $115 million this quarter, up 37% since last year. Avatar gave them a huge boost last quarter but grosses are still up especially with 3D movies like Toy Story 3 and Iron Man 2 bringing in the audiences.

Writes Forbes:

nclude the two-part “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” “Batman 3” and “The Hobbit.” On June 23, Disney agreed to three additional 3D films with IMAX in 2011. “The IMAX Experience adds another level of impact and excitement to a movie,” said Chuck Viane, president of distribution, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. The planned Disney titles include sequels to “Cars” and “Pirates of the Caribbean.”

Considering the only IMAX movies I ever watched before the resent spate of films was probably something about deep sea diving or the Arctic, those are amazing numbers for the company.

Discovery will launch the station sometime in 2011 under its name and will be a sort of showcase for 3D. It will likely be a lot like what Discovery HD Theater was to high definition a few years back. While ESPN 3D will only be up during live events, this station will be running 24/7. Now all we need is more affordable 3D HDTVs. Hopefully some will be announced at CES this week.

Did you see Star Trek. You had to see Star Trek. It was tits. But if you missed it the first time around or you need something to do for your anniversary, JJ Abrams’ Star Trek will be re-released in 85 IMAX theaters this Friday.

The film is getting shown again because it was only available in IMAX for two weeks originally, starting on May 8th. Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian kicked Star Trek out on May 22nd and IMAX films generally get a four week run. So it’s the right thing to do and we’re excited. The movie is great.

Did you know that not all IMAX screens are the same size? I had no idea. It seems that in order to expand its market, the company has installed smaller screens in some theaters.
Wired talked to the CEO of IMAX and found that it’s true, not all IMAX screens are the same size. Traditionally, an IMAX screen was around 72-feet, but the company compromised in order to install more systems in more markets. According to the CEO though, it’s not just the screen that makes an IMAX special.

These IMAX-lite theaters were apparently modified to further the IMAX experience. The projectors were upgraded, the audio systems enhanced, and the seats moved around so viewers would perceive a bigger screen. At least that’s what the CEO is saying.
View IMAX or LIEMAX? in a larger map

Still, I don’t know if I would pay the added cost to go see a movie in one of these theaters. If I’m going to see an IMAX movie, I want an effn gigantic screen. Use this Google Maps guide to see if your local IMAX is a LIEMAX.

Didja catch Star Trek last weekend? Some people did ’cause the movie brought in an estimated $72.5 million. Anyway, one of Joel Johnson’s friends just so happens to be an IMAX engineer and offers up an explanation on why the new Star Trek isn’t a real IMAX film dispite being shown on IMAX screens. She goes into a bit more detail than “it isn’t IMAX ’cause it’s not film on IMAX.”

Just for future reference, ST was not shot in IMAX, and therefore is not a true imax film. imax is 65mm, 15-perf film, with an aspect ratio of 1:1.37 and a MASSIVE amount of image area, approximately 4x the size of VistaVision (VV is also the same format 35mm still cameras shoot, imagine a negative almost four times the surface area of one that was shot in your still camera.)

Star Trek was shot in cinemascope, an anamorphic format that squeezes the image on the film, but projects it through lenses that stretch it back out horizontally to its 1:2.35 aspect ratio. C-scope is run through a normal movie camera vertically, (90 degrees to a still camera) and exposes a frame taking up four perfs of film – about half the film area of a 35mm still camera.

The Bay, that’s how we’re going to refer to Michael Bay from here on out, has announced that a handful of sequences from Transformers 2 will be shot with IMAX cameras. However, the rest of the movie will be re-mastered for IMAX, but those scenes will be seen in traditional letterbox. When the IMAX sequences come up the picture will fill the entire screen. The movie coming to IMAX is old news, but scenes being shot with IMAX cameras is new, in case you were wondering.

“The extraordinary level of detail and intensity captured by the IMAX camera creates many exciting possibilities for us with this film,” said Michael Bay, the film’s director. “IMAX’s all-encompassing format will take this story to a new level, and I am once again very excited to share The IMAX Experience with Transformers fans around the world.”

OMFG, Megan Fox in IMAX, OMFG!!! Mark your calendars for June 26, folks.

Warner Bros. have their eyes set on swooping up some Oscars this year with the “Dark Knight”, so they’ve announced that Christopher Nolan’s epic sequel in the Dark Knight series will return to IMAX theaters in January to remind voters of how awesome the movie was. There was no mention of re-releasing the film in regular theaters, though.

Of course, WB just wants to ‘strike while the iron is hot’ and make some loot. It’s also safe to say that they’re gunning for “Titanic” as the highest grossing film of all time, which made $1.84 billion in its reign of tyranny. Thus far the “Dark Knight” has raked in $512 million domestically, $440 million internationally, and over $55 million from IMAX screenings.

Who’s going back to see it in IMAX? I’ve seen it twice in IMAX (three times total) and will definitely go back in January.

The film showcases snowboard, windsurfing, and rock climbing, all shot on high-def’s granddaddy. Blu-ray is the absolutely, perfect medium to showcase IMAX’s 70 mm stock, but how about World’s Wackiest Police Takedowns or When Animals Take Revenge instead of lame extreme sports. Nether the less, ’Extreme’ is hitting shelves early November at a MSRP of $28.95.

Texas Instruments Announces IMAX Digital Projection System to be Powered by DLP Cinema®

2008 marks the 10th Anniversary of digital cinema led by DLP Cinema

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA – March 11, 2008: Texas Instruments (TI) (NYSE: TXN) DLP Cinema® announced today at ShoWest that IMAX® Corporation (Nasdaq: IMAX) has decided to incorporate the DLP Cinema projector solution in its IMAX digital projection systems to be deployed by commercial exhibitors around the world.

“We are excited to cement this alliance with DLP Cinema, and believe their technology will help ensure that our digital projection system delivers the best cinema experience available to audiences,” said IMAX Co-Chairmen and Co-CEOs Richard L. Gelfond and Bradley J. Wechsler. “We’ve evaluated competing cinema projection technology and found DLP Cinema to be the ideal match for IMAX.”

IMAX’s highly anticipated digital projection system integrates a suite of proprietary IMAX intellectual properties with the DLP Cinema projector solution in a way that creates The IMAX Experience in a digital format.

IMAX expects its transition to digital to help to drive profitability for studios, exhibitors and IMAX theatres by virtually eliminating the need for film prints, increasing program flexibility and ultimately increasing the number of movies shown on IMAX screens. With the implementation of DLP Cinema technology, IMAX moviegoers will experience precise, lifelike images in vibrant colors, delivered through the millions of microscopic mirrors on the DLP Cinema chip.

“We are proud to work with IMAX and look forward to the development and rollout of the best digital cinema experience in the market,” said Nancy Fares, Business Manager for DLP Cinema Products Group. “DLP Cinema projectors are the heart of every digital 2D and 3D movie experience for traditional and now large format venues. We look forward to participating in their move to digital in the months ahead.”

Digital cinema installations continue to be catalyzed by the increasing release of 3D film. The 3D movie format is serving as a revenue driver for the film industry overall, and has gained a resurgence of interest by moviegoers. IMAX has been a leader in 3D content, especially since the overwhelming box office success of The Polar Express: An IMAX 3D Experience, which has grossed more than $65 million in IMAX theatres around the world since it opened in 2005. More recently, Beowulf: An IMAX 3D Experience grossed $25 million, representing a per screen average of more than $185,000.

Celebrating its 10th year in the film industry, DLP Cinema projection technology is installed in over 6,000 theatres on every continent except Antarctica and is the only digital 3D single projector solution. Today there are more than 1,200 theatres in the country that offer the digital 3D experience powered by DLP Cinema technology, and this number will continue to increase as IMAX begins its rollout of digital projection systems powered by DLP Cinema.

10 Years of Digital Cinema

2008 marks the 10th Anniversary of DLP’s entrance into the cinema industry, with the first fully functional and Hollywood endorsed digital DLP Cinema movie projector. After years of prototypes, DLP had delivered Hollywood’s biggest image critics and cinematographers with a digital projector that met the world’s highest standards on color, brightness and reliability and therefore pioneered the digital cinema concept. A year later in 1999 the studios released the first movie in digital format on DLP Cinema which was Star Wars: Episode I- The Phantom Menace. DLP Cinema honors the heritage of the ultimate viewing experience while incorporating the latest technology innovations, such as the 3D single projector solution, and cutting costs for cinema exhibitors, distributors and ultimately the consumer.

About DLP Cinema

DLP Cinema is a proprietary technology that delivers clear, sharp, bright and accurate images to movie theatres globally. To manufacture and market under the DLP Cinema trademark, technology licensees, including Barco, Christie and NEC, must meet stringent standards and guidelines meant to ensure the best possible performance and picture quality.
