Google today launched a native iPhone version of its Google Offers app. Unsurprisingly, the app is very similar to the Google Offers Android app, which the company launched last November. With the new app, Google Offers users in the U.S. will be able to buy deals right from the app and find nearby deals while they are on the go. They can also use deals they have already bought right from their… → Read More

Google Quietly Launches Groupon Now-Like Free Google Offers Across The U.S.

Google Offers (Beta)

Google today announced its latest update for Google Maps for Android with support for Google Offers. One interesting piece of this announcement that stood out was that Google Maps for Android users now get access to free Google Offers – think coupons for a free coffee or dessert – through the app. Turns out, that’s actually just a small part of a wider update to Google Offers. Merchants across… → Read More

Google Offers Versus Groupon: The Portland Throwdown

Google Offers just finished its first month. Google has been testing its Groupon compete in Portland and I’ve been closely tracking the results.

Doing a head-to-head comparison like this is a bit difficult because the two companies run deals differently. Groupon runs multiple deals each day. Many Groupon deals span multiple days, with some running for three days. Google Offers on weekends ran… → Read More

Why I Want Google Offers And The Entire Daily Deals Business To Die

There has been a lot of excitement about the daily deal being the next big thing in online marketing. It’s actually just a clever repackaging of old ideas. Google’s entrance into the space with Google Offers gives the daily deal business a legitimacy it doesn’t deserve.

There is a false perception that Internet magic is why these daily deals are so cheap. Most accounts in the mainstream press… → Read More

Google Offers Is A Cheap Knockoff

Google’s recently released Offers product is showing mixed success in Portland, its first market. In this post I will try to look at both the good and the bad of Google Offers. As I point out below, they get an A- for effort, but a C for originality.

Since launch, the offers have included discounted coffee, pool table time, a Lebanese restaurant, tanning services and a pedicab brewery tour. The… → Read More

Why Daily Deals Are Becoming A Raw Deal

floydscoffeeshop

In the wake of Groupon’s IPO filing, it’s worth looking at the fundamentals of the offer. Growth numbers to date have been phenomenal. But is it a business that can last?

We love daily deals for a simple reason: the deals have been outstanding. If revenue growth in the first Internet bubble was about selling a dollar for 50 cents, growth in the daily deals business has been about getting other… → Read More
