Lazertag looks like I wanted it to look when I was a kid

This shot of the Lazertag Multiplayer Battle System, $80 from Amazon, looks so cool that I might need to get me some. The new guns have recoil and rumble as well as a shot blast system for simulating a shotgun. As John Brownlee points out, a lot of us 80s kids never got to play Lazertag because a police officer shot a kit who was playing it in the dark. I suspect that the story was urban legend… → Read More

How do terrorists drink tea?

Out of terrorist teapots! If you’re angry at that joke, don’t be mad at me. Instead, direct your anger towards the maker the teapot. On the other hand, if you enjoyed it I expect a high-five the next time I see you. Some features of the teapot are: – The menacing teapot should scare most tea drinkers away. Sometimes you just don’t want to share. – The mask is removable, just in case you… → Read More

Wedgits: You know, for kids

I’ve seen quite a few toys in the past two years but Wedgits are actually something I’d recommend. My buddy Jer brought them for our son and he’s been building towers and knocking them over with reckless abandon. They are essentially symmetrical square rings (is there a better geometrical term?) that stack and lock without force. Because they fit inside each other you can… → Read More

Building "Smart" dominos with sensors and circuits

This looks like fun, and actually seems simple enough that even someone with a fear of wires could put together a pretty competent smart-domino setup. And it’ll give you a reason to go dig around in your parents’ basement for those old legos you secretly want to have around anyway. I like the marble circuit-break. The whole thing reminds me of stuff like The Incredible Machine and… → Read More

French school tells its students to turn off TV, computer, video games

So get this. There’s a school in France that’s telling its students to give up watching TV, using the computer, playing video games, etc. in a “game” against “an enemy.” (The school’s director’s words.) The enemy, presumably, is fun. The 10-day long ordeal is modeled after our own “TV-Turnoff Week,” which found that kids consumed, so to… → Read More

Mr. Robotato Head at Disneyland's newest high-tech ride

Yeah, that’s not freaky at all. This weird robot-potato-human hybrid (there’s a hidden operator) is a first among Disney’s robots, as it is able to form the shapes of words with its mouth. Just a few more steps to fully functioning Cylons! The ride, Toy Story Mania, is super high-tech with lots of audience interaction and advanced technology which Mr. Potato Head embodies most… → Read More

Happy Cheese Weasel Day!

My buddy Jeremy reports: Unknown to most, April 3rd is Cheese Weasel Day, the holiday where the Cheese Weasel brings dairy goodness to all the good boys and girls in the tech industry. While the origins are murky, it seems to have started around 1992 when a weasel was spotted carrying a Kraft Single. This, they assumed, must be the Cheese Weasel, and therefore, that it must be Cheese Weasel Day. → Read More

Review: WowWee Flytech Butterfly

It flies like a real butterfly! I was actually quite surprised at the build quality on this thing. Usually these sorts of things blow into a million pieces on the first day but the Flytech butterfly withstood quite a few crash landings during our trials. The dog also bit it a few times, which is usually the kiss of death for toys like this. → Read More

First the iPhone gets Spore, now it gets Legos. What's left?

Spore, the ultimate sandbox video game, and Lego, the ultimate sandbox brick-based toy, are now both coming to the iPhone. It’s only a matter of time before Lincoln Logs and Candyland are part of its expanding game empire as well. Man, the iPod Touch is going to start cutting into the DS’s market share. Did anyone see that coming? The site’s interface is pretty slow and annoying… → Read More

We're iPhone clippable

Just a quick note: I just upgraded to a jailbroken 1.1.3 and I went over to clip CrunchGear.com and place it onto my desktop. Much to my pleasure and surprise, it turns out old man Hickey made us a fancy icon for the iPhone home screen, making genuinely happy for the first time in weeks. I may be a sad, bitter man but at least CG has an icon! → Read More

I dare you to take this clock through airport security

It’s a desk clock shaped like something out of an episode of 24. It’s also one of those, “why didn’t I think of this?” gadgets that we love. It’s just a concept piece now, but if this hits the shelves, we know we’re getting one as soon as possible. Artist’s site [via Technabob] → Read More

Facebook got drunk with ABC News over the weekend, posted pics, now there's a politics section

Now banned in Syria, Facebook is getting into U.S. politics. Woooohoooo!. Facebook signed a deal with ABC News, apparently giving the site an air of credibility beyond the “look how drunk we got last night” crowd. Users will be able to follow off-air ABC reporters as they cover all the excitement of the campaign, from candidates dodging answers in Des Moines to professional handlers… → Read More

Have fun with a Beninese scammer

Hey, guys. If you’re bored at work today, I have a fun little game we can play. I posted some Ikea dressers on Craigslist in New York and sold them a few days later. However, I got an email from Mrs. Mary asking to buy the dressers for $300 or something and that she would send me $700 for me to cash and send her the “change.” Standard scam. However, I’ve got Mrs. Mary going… → Read More

The reason you live: Super Mario sound FX keychain

Look, let’s cut the bullshit and get straight to the point, shall we? This is a keychain that plays Super Mario Bros. sound FX and has a bright red paint job with an old school Mario logo. It is without a doubt the best $5.99 you will ever spend. Why’s this? Because the next time you get drunk off your ass and stumble out of the freshman dorms at your school, you’ll find a party… → Read More

Rolling Cooler Brings You Tunes, Beer

I thought this would be a day too late to be useful for your 4th of July reveling before realizing that it rained quite a bit yesterday. Baja Motorsports 70cc Dirt Bike Review

So much fun in such a small package I want to tell you a story, so sit down, grab a Miller Lite and ease into your chair. Alright, let’s get started. We were still hungover from the night before and were feeling equally buzzed on this particular afternoon. After discussing our options of… → Read More

The Toy Polaris Sub Revealed

As a child of the early seventies, I grew up in a time between the scams on the Interwebs and scams on the backs of comic books. My parents were fairly savvy when it came to this kind of stuff, but on this one point they were dead wrong: the Polaris Sub, once available for a mere $6.98, kicked major ass. Look at this kid. Happy, submarining, just waiting for dirty commies to roll up on him. → Read More

Video: How To Build a Water Balloon Catapult

By following this how-to video to the letter, you’ll be able to make a water balloon-flinging catapult this weekend. All you need are some sections of PVC pipe, a couple of general purpose tools and the wherewithal to put it all together. (Which, frankly, leaves most of us here out.) This video does a fine job of showing the play-by-play, culminating in the launch of a toy cow on top of a… → Read More

Life-size "Lost in Space" Robot Only $25K

Goody, more robots! Today’s is a Robot B9 replica—you know, the one from “Lost in Space” that always ran around flailing his arms in the air warning about danger and hippies. She’s full-size, too, which just makes the $24,500 price all the more inviting. Right. If I had an extra $25K I probably wouldn’t be buying robots, but rather some Air Jordans and matching… → Read More

BlinkyBugs: The Coolest DIY Project You'll See Today

PT over at MAKE has a great post on BlinkyBugs. These electronic critters are made up of LEDs, a watch battery, and a little coper tubing. You can really get creative and add pipe cleaners for that “fuzzy insect” effect. Each BlinkyBug will light up when picked up or moved thanks to a little set of antenna that act as a circuit. DiscEraser: One Swipe For Total CD/DVD Data Destruction

I recently had to destroy 200 CDs due to a mistake from a reproduction company and a file mix up. I ended up throwing the discs through a home shredder, which not only took forever, but is bad for the environment. (Doubly so, since my local recycler wouldn’t take the shredded bits, just whole discs and the dye used on the discs is a contaminant.) If only I had had the $12.99 DiscEraser. The… → Read More

Neuromancer Graphic Novel Online

Speaking of florid cyberpunkian prose, how about a great way to spend a Friday? I saw this graphic novel in a comic books shop (Monkey’s Retreat in Columbus, Ohio) back in high school. I haven’t been able to find it until BoingBoing dug it up. I’m kind of afraid of reading because, as far as I remember, it was so cool that I had to go get some cash and come back for it but when I… → Read More
