Booyah! Amazon just updated their Fujiflim F200EXR page with an availability date. The most promising and probably the best point and shoot available will start shipping March 7th. We can’t wait to see what that EXR sensor can do.

More sample images from a Fujifilm F200EXR emerge [Update]

Dpreview has just posted a batch of sample images from a pre-production and production F200EXR. They certainly look better than this original batch, but we’ll need more time to sift through them.

My initial impression is that picture quality is very sharp, but it gets a bit noisy at higher ISO settings. What do you photogs think?

Update: Here’s a little commentary from my brother based on comparisons to the F30.

The iso 1600 images beat the F30 images at 1600, hands down. Pretty sure the 800′s are better too, but it’s closer.

Some of the 800s look like crap at 100%. Very processed looking. And I had higher expectations for the 400′s.

The 100s and 200s look nice, but I see some noise in sky areas for instance.

Fuji’s highly anticipated follow up to the F30, the F200EXR, is available now for pre-order from Amazon. Sure, it’s a $400 point and shoot, but if it’s even marginally better than the F30 then we’re all in for a treat. Check out test shots here. Ideally, we’d really like to see these sample images at 100 percent with crops at ISO 800 and 1600 to see what it’s really capable of. But until we have one in our possession for testing we’ll reserve judgment.

Fujifilm's fine new F200EXR features that sexy new sensor

A long time ago, on a site design far, far away from the current one, we mentioned that Fujifilm was preparing to release a totally awesome new sensor for point-and-shoots. A fundamental reorganization of the photodiode pattern results in… well, if you want to know, read the post. But the point is that they’ve made a more intelligent sensor instead of just packing more megapixels in.

Of course, the F200EXR isn’t short on megapixels, either. 12 of ‘em should satisfy the most demanding point-and-shooter, and while the 5x optical zoom isn’t going to set the world on fire, it’s decent and you can always, you know, step closer. It has three modes, two of which are actually new and possibly useful:

Fine Capture Mode, which is basically normal mode
Pixel Fusion Mode, which uses pixel binning to increase sensitivity at the cost of fine detail — but in low light you were going to lose that detail anyway
Dual Capture, which takes two exposures at the same time and combines them to create a wider dynamic range.

It’s also got the usual face detection, image stabilization and shot modes. It’ll shoot rapid fire, but not very rapidly. The main selling point on this thing is the EXR sensor, which is probably difficult to demonstrate without actually trying it; that’s why we’ll get a full review of the thing up as soon as we can.
