LaCie announced the latest in their line of external drives today, the Rikiki Go. Apparently, a Rikiki is a small monkey with a mohawk, as seen in the product documentation on the LaCie website. Regardless of strange marketing tactics, the latest drive has a brushed aluminium enclosure, and integrated USB cable, and comes with automated backup software included with the drive. The Rikiki comes in… → Read More
Luxury storage masters LaCie have introduced a new drive (well, drives) intended for maximum data protection and connectivity. Inside that forbidding black box are two hard drives, and every bit that’s written to one is written to the other in true RAID 1 fashion. It has built-in server and torrent download functions, which could be nice, and if it’s connected to your router, you should be able to… → Read More
Short version: Western Digital’s refreshed My Book Essential external hard drive provides a simple, unobtrusive, and relatively inexpensive home backup solution. With an enormous 2TB capacity, built-in WD SmartWare software, 256-bit built-in encryption with password protection, an “illuminated capacity gauge,” and a MSRP of $249.99, there is very little not to like here. → Read More
If you feel like riding the wave (and are made of money), look no further than the newest configuration of Mercury On-The-Go Pro, which is the first that I know of to put a 2.5″ 1TB HDD in a bus-powered enclosure. Sure, there are 1TB units already available (for under a hundy, even), but they use 3.5″ drives, making them bulky and rarely bus-powered. These Mercury ones are the only truly portable… → Read More
One of LaCie’s most recognizable products, the Rugged line of external HDDs has been around for ages, but only recently expanded into the 3.5″ HDD realm with this 1TB unit. The design is much the same, but obviously it’s significantly larger — and more spacious. But is it worth the premium over other 1TB drives? → Read More
Convergence abounds with Brando’s laboriously-named SATA HDD Dock Station Combo Stereo Speaker + Hub. The product costs $59 and serves as a dock for 2.5- and 3.5-inch hard drives, a speaker system, a two-port USB hub, and features microphone inputs for VOIP headsets. → Read More
If you like to hoard stuff digitally, you’ll love the price on this two-terabyte external hard drive from Newegg. It’s the Western Digital My Book for $249 with free shipping. That’s cheap! Just think of all the questionable content you could store on it! Set it up striped as RAID 0 or go for broke and mirror it as RAID 1. And remember, it looks like a book so you can put it amongst the… → Read More
Nothing really revolutionary here, but it is very pretty. Wait, I was looking at the girl. The hard drive, as I was saying, has very smooth skin — damn, that’s the girl again. Okay, seriously, this LG XD4 hard drive is a normal external HDD with a good-looking shell, available in 500GB, 750GB, and 1TB capacities. It uses 3.5″ drives so it’s not quite portable, but if it… → Read More
Ahhh, this is very 24. I can see Jack Bauer pulling nuclear secrets off it after choking a terrorist to death with the USB cable. I don’t think that’s the image Lenovo is going for, though. In fact, its appearance is plain practically to the point of invisibility, looking more like a credit card reader than anything else. The passcode system allows for an administrator and up to 10… → Read More
Son of a motherless goat, that’s a lot of storage. You can pick up the two-terabyte Western Digital My Book from Newegg.com for $369.99, which includes free shipping. It packs two one-terabyte drives and can be used in a RAID 0 or RAID 1 array. It also has USB 2.0 and FireWire connections, a 7200RPM spindle speed, and 16MB cache. Western Digital My Book Mirror Edition 2TB [Newegg.com via… → Read More
This is a nice little drive that Freecom is launching. Tasteful, simple, even covered in a non-slip rubber finish. And it tips the scales at just over 155g or 5.5oz, which makes it light enough to carry in a purse (or murse). It’s USB2 so it’s fast enough for most tasks and it costs around $90 for the 160GB or probably $140 or so for the 320GB. I want one! → Read More
I actually could have used one of these last night when I was swapping and backing up my internal HDDs and didn’t have enough space in my case to hold ‘em all. This multi-hard drive enclosure is not really a new kind of product, but it is by far the simplest (and the price is right). They’ve essentially just ripped the HDD cage out of a computer case and are selling it as a… → Read More
This slipped by me earlier in the month, but it’s a pretty cool little drive of special interest to shutterbugs. It’s an upcoming storage device developed in a partnership between Polaroid and Storage Appliance Corporation. Called the Polaroid Media Backup Photo Edition, it’s essentially a portable 40GB hard drive designed for backing up your photos—and only your photos. I… → Read More
