This is what you get. You knew there was a good reason why that Durabrand DVD player only cost $30 at Walmart when the rest averaged $80. It’s because they can catch on fire, burn down your house, and kill your cats according to a recall. So far there have been 12 cases of the players overheating with five of them catching on fire and causing property damage. Think of the cats! The recall affects 1.5 million DVD players sold at Walmart from January 2006 to July 2009. Think hard. Is this the DVD player you bought for Grandma? → Read More
Toshiba Japan announced a new portable DVD player today [JP], the SD-P93DTW, which is equipped with a One-Seg digital TV tuner. The device is Japan-only at this point. But Toshiba sells the SDP93S in the US, which is essentially the same player minus the TV tuner (the tuner is useless outside Japan and Brazil anyway). And Americans have to pay a lot less for their player. → Read More
Don’t scoff at this, friend. There are still millions of citizens of this great nation who have not and will not switch to Blu-ray or HD DVD (it’s still around if you look hard enough). Therefore, I offer Amazon’s lightning deal for the next couple hours. I’d be quick about it, though. → Read More
Toshiba realizes their folly with HD DVD so they’re trying to make up for it with a wide variety of DVD players, portable DVD players and LCD TV/DVD combos. First up is the 22-inch widescreen LCD with 1680×1050 resolution and a contrast ratio of 1000:1. Response time is a blazing 5ms with HDMI and PC inputs as well as a thin chassis depth of 2.95-inches. It also supports WMA, MP3, JPEG and DiVX playback. The 19-inch model’s depth is a mere 2.64-inches and has the same specs. There’s also a white version. Yay! → Read More

Having traveled quite a bit in the last six months I really could have used a portable DVD player to drown out the roar of the engines, the terrible movie choices made by the airline, the crying baby two seats over, or the constant jibber-jabber from my girlfriend (just joking, M). While I haven’t had any flights during the review of the Philips DCP850, I have had a handful of train rides over 1.5 hours, including yesterday when an annoying douche sat in front of me and thought he was the next Great White Rapper. This definitely isn’t your run-of-the-mill portable DVD player either. It has a few tricks up its sleeve. → Read More
If your house is anything like the CrunchGear Mansion, it’s filled to the brim with gadgetry and electronica. And with all this newfangled convenience comes an equal dose of frustration. If any companies are interested in the following ideas, I’ll be standing by. → Read More
GadgetUniverse has an interesting product up. It’s a visor mounted DVD player with FM transmitter and apparently allows your bored passengers to enjoy red hot work-out porn from the comfort of your Impala’s bucket seats. At $299.95, it seems a little iffy but the 7-inch device can play DVDs, VCDs, and MP3 disks as well as SD cards. It also has a TV tuner and a touch screen. Pretty impressive list of features for such a slim device. Product Page → Read More

This is where Zox from Japan steps in with the launch of the DS-DP105 DVD player that allows you to change the appearance of the unit by changing the cover depending on which one of your personalities is watching a movie. The Zox plays back DVD-R and CD-R/RW and drops this week in Japan for around $60. → Read More

A company like ezGear should lay off the EZ a bit but we’ll let it slide for now. Its new ezPlay Portable DVD Player is pretty decent looking. It’s shaped like an old-school Sony Discman and plays DVD, MP4, VCD, CD, and MP3 discs. What sets it apart from all other portable DVD players though is that you can hook it up to ezGear’s ezVision Video iWear system. The ezVision system is basically a headset you wear that gives you “a 50” Wide Screen View, Ultra Light Weight at just 68-grams, Built in Stereo Audio, Eight (8) hour Battery Life, [and] Privacy.” Altogether it sounds like a decent package and is probably amazing during long airplane flights. You can pick up the ezPlay Portable DVD Player for $119.99 in stores and online. → Read More
