Happy Friday, deal hunters. You can pick up a Dell Mini 9 netbook for $199 today. Can’t you find a little extra room near your couch for an inexpensive netbook? Won’t you give the Mini 9 a decent home?!

If you can find it in your heart to adopt this computer, you’ll find it has the following specs:

Intel Atom N270 CPU (1.6GHz)

8.9-inch LCD at 1024×600

4-cell battery

Ubuntu Linux

512MB RAM

4GB solid state drive

No Bluetooth, no camera

So it’s not a powerhouse by any means but, hey, couch + netbook = never having to get up.

As netbooks go, Dell has the Mini 9 and the Mini 12. Now it appears that the Mini 10, as shown at CES, has quietly emerged in the UK. You can buy it from Tesco for £349.00 if you’re not down with the 9- or 12-inch versions.

I checked Dell’s UK website and there’s no mention of the 10-inch Mini, so perhaps its being quietly rolled out to select retailers. Early specs had put the screen at 1280×720 resolution, although the specs on Tesco’s product page list it as boring, run-of-the-mill WSVGA at 1024×600.

Aw, man. Good news, bad news. The good news is that the Dell Mini 12 is now available. The bad news is that it starts at $549, the one gigabyte of RAM isn’t upgradeable, and your only choice for an operating system is Vista Home Basic. There are three models available for $549, $599, and $678, respectively. The lowest-end has a 1.33GHz Atom CPU, 40GB hard drive, and a three cell battery. The other two have 1.6GHz processors, six cell batteries, and 60GB or 80GB hard drives. Other than that, the normally-fun process of customizing your Dell machine isn’t too involved. I’ll go on record and say that the non-upgradeable one gigabyte of RAM and only offering Windows Vista Basic is going to keep plenty of people away from this machine. It’s a shame, too. I was looking forward to this little guy.
