Nikon acknowledges D5000 power-on issue, fix coming next week

So apparently the Nikon D5000 DSLR has a small problem where it doesn’t always turn on. Nikon has just issued a service advisory where the company address the issue. In short, if your D5000 has a certain serial number, you will be able to ship it off to Nikon starting on July 23, 2009. Shipping is of course covered by Nikon and the company will get your camera back as soon as possible. A serial number look up tool will be available on the 23rd as well. There is nothing we like more than a company that stands up and resolves these types of issues. Right, Amazon?

If you’re the type that simply must have the latest gadget the day it comes our – you know who you are – then head on over to Amazon to pre-order the articulating screen-equipped and HD video shooting Nikon D5000. Only the kit is available for purchase, but we hear the 18-55mm F.3.5-5.6G VR lens isn’t that bad anyway. $849.

The D5000 was just an Internet rumor 24 hours ago. Nikon went official with the high-end entry-level DSRL late last night and we are already seeing images from the camera.

DPReview apparently has had a camera for a bit and posted an early hands-on including 26 sample images. What we are really curious about however, isn’t the still image quality which is probably just fine, but the 720p video quality. The video feature is what will push this camera apart and stur innovation from competitors. Anyway, check out the entire still image gallery here.

Nikon announces swivel-screen D5000, for real

Yes, dear readers, the D5000 we’ve all suspected existed (as late as tonight), does indeed. Nikon’s new high-end consumer DSLR has hit, and it looks like a serious contender with its wealth of features and sub-$1000 price point. It’s not going to walk on water or anything, but it makes for a very compelling alternative to, for example, my own Canon Rebel XSi.

Let’s just have the specs right off the bat, shall we?

12.3 megapixels
2.7″ swivel LCD
720p video at 24fps
Stills at 4fps
EXPEED image processor and 3D Color Matrix Metering II (yikes!)
Built-in dust control systems
Lots of scene modes and automatic settings you should probably avoid

So it’s nothing revolutionary, but it’s certainly a lot of camera for the price. I’d dearly love to be able to shoot 720p at 24fps on my Canon, despite my reservations about image quality. I personally don’t see a lot of uses for a swivel screen, though taking pictures among a crowd (hands in the air) is certainly one of them.

There’s a kit version, which comes with a AF-S NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR lens (what a mouthful) for $850, and a body-only version for $730. I’ve heard that kit lens isn’t so bad, so for a first time DSLR shooter, it might be a good idea to go for the whole shebang. We’ll have more info, and even a review if you’re you’re lucky, as soon as it’s available.

Well, the rumors about the D5000 have been flying fast and furious, and now it looks like someone at the leak factory let some pictures out a bit early — “early,” that is, if this camera from Nikon is going to debut at their press event tomorrow as we believe. As you can see, there’s a 2.7-inch swivel screen (swiveling from the middle, oddly). But that’s not its only trick if rumors are to be believed.

This looks like something that may or may not be a future D5000 SLR with bigger flash, microphone (for video) and a maybe even full frame sensor. Kor krikey!

We’ve been following this yeti for some time now and it seems that NikonRumor’s rumors are coming true. To recap, they thought the D5000 would drop during PMA.

So far the only spec leaked is that the camera will be loaded with a 12.3 MP sensor which is in line with previous reports that the D5000’s image quality would be on par with the D90 who just so happens to also sport a 12.3 MP sensor. Nice.

Update: Nikon Rumors manged to dig up two more pics of the upcoming camera. Plus, the site is claiming that the D5000 should hit stores on May 1st, 2009. No official word from Nikon yet though.

Update 2: The leaks keep on flowing. Nikon Rumors found some specs via sofmap.com who also lists the camera for 84,800 Yen, which works out to be $844. Seems ’bout right from a discount retailer. MSRP to be around a $1k?

OMG. It seems that the rest of the internet has finally caught wind of the upcoming Nikon DSLR and is currently climaxing over some spy shots of said camera. The supposed spy shots do not reveal much of the D60′s successor (perhaps called the D5000) we haven’t covered over the last few months with the exception of what appears to be a movable, and perhaps live, LCD screen. That is, of course, if these spy shots are real.

Look at the picture. Doesn’t it seem a bit strange. Like, was the original photographer standing out on a balcony or ledge and just so happened to notice the unreleased camera in the wild. But the photographer was too far away for a zoom lens to capture and so the picture had to be cropped to bring the camera into view. The dubious forum post states that the pics are of a commercial shoot someplace in Eastern Europe.

Speaking of Eastern Europe, Nikon has a press event scheduled for April 14 where the company might reveal their Spring ’09 lineup which might include the camera pictured above.

The Nikon D5000 coming next week at PMA?

There has been mumblings that Nikon was going to introduce a new, entry level DSLR to replace the aging D40/D60 lineup and that DSLR might just might launch next week at PMA. Besides the MP count, details really aren’t flowing but we’re hoping Nikon has a nice DSLR in the works.

Nikon Rumors, a good authority on everything Nikon btw, is stating that via a reliable source, the D5000 will be launched next week in Vegas. So far the only spec leaked is that the camera will be loaded with a 12.3 MP sensor which is in line with previous reports that the D5000′s image quality would be on par with the D90 who just so happens to also sport a 12.3 MP sensor. Nice.

Chances are though that this will not be the only entry level DSLR announced next week. Pentax just dropped the price on some of its models and Canon knows what they are doing. Next week should be a great time for camera fiends.

Nikon prepping a new entry level DSLR, the D5000?

According to the rumor, the D5000 will take over the role as Nikon’s entry level DSLR. Details aren’t exactly plentiful, but it sounds like it would be on par with the D90′s image quality, lack a AF motor like the D40/D60 and have more than three AF points. Sounds possible, right? It basically would be a stripped down D90 which would hopefully come to market around the $600 mark. More as we get it.
