Call of Duty cash cow will be milked completely dry

Let’s go back to the year 2005. That autumn, RedOctane released a game called Guitar Hero. It was pretty successful, so it spawned a sequel, Guitar Hero II. That came out on the fall of 2006. One year later, Rock Band first popped up. Then, in the span of around two years, video game publishers lost their minds, and published approximaely 800 music rhythm games. Now you have a situation where not even The Beatles can make Rock Band big again. The lesson: don’t saturate the market with same-y games too suddenly. With that in mind, laugh: Activision has created a “dedicated [Call of Duty] business unit that will bring together its various new brand initiatives with focused, dedicated resources around the world.” “Brand initiatives,” folks. Get ready for, like, 900 new Call of Duty games in the next few years! → Read More

Thou shalt not look: Activision slaps a Cease & Desist on MW2 aimbot hack

Hope you peeped that youtube video when we told you about it earlier, because Activition has fired off a cease and desist order on the video of the aimbot and wallhack being used. They claim it’s a copyright infringement, but there’s a whole lot more video out there that they are just ignoring. Sounds like someone is trying to hide their dirty laundry. → Read More

Modern Warfare 2 delayed for the PC, Call of Duty trademarked for movie use

Two things: One, the PC release of Modern Warfare 2 has been delayed by a couple of weeks until November 24, 2009. The console versions are still on track of a November 10, 2009 release.

Second, Hollywood is apparently in need of an all-American, shoot-’em-up, special effects nightmare of a movie because Activision has trademarked Call of Duty for movie use. → Read More

Looks like Call of Duty 4 will be on the Nintendo Wii this year

Help me parse the following sentence: “The record-setting and award-winning Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is coming to Nintendo. Activision Publishing, Inc. will release Call of Duty: Modern Warfare on Wii on November 10 in conjunction with the launch of Infinity Ward’s Modern Warfare 2.” Does that mean Call of Duty 4 is coming to the Wii, or some other Call of Duty game? → Read More

Fortunate Son: Soundtrack selection points to Vietnam era Call of Duty

That Activision is looking to license music from the 1960s—plus Cuban, African and Soviet Union hits—can only mean one thing: the next Call of Duty will take place during the Vietnam War. (And what a fun war it was! Perhaps there will be an Escape from Saigon on a Helicopter, tail between your legs, quick time event?) Treyarch, of Call of Duty: World at War, Call of Duty 3, and all those Tony Hawk ports from the early 2000s fame, looks to be involved. You can almost hear the groans from the Internet. → Read More

GameStop, the arbiter of the video game industry, would like to see some price cuts

Since when the does video game industry bow to what GameStop thinks? Your guess is as good as mine, but the company’s CEO Dan DeMatto, wants Sony and Nintendo to cut the price of the PS3 and Wii, respectively. That’s all well and good—who wouldn’t want to see the PS3 at $199?—but why should GameStop be the kingmaker? → Read More

Call of Duty: World at War gameplay footage

http://www.gametrailers.com/remote_wrap.php?mid=38818 Wait, what? A first-person shooter.. about World War II? That’s.. that’s incredible! Why has no one done this before? I’m still on the fence with this one. On one hand, Infinity Ward set the bar really high with Call of Duty 4, and I’m far beyond sick of WWII games. On the other, holy crap look at that flame thrower. If they can maintain the pacing and sense of chaos shown in that video, this may be the next thing to gobble up all of my free time when it hits Windows and all the next-gens come November 11th. How about an online beta in the mean time, Treyarch? Check out two more gameplay videos after the jump.. → Read More

Bungie praises Call of Duty – much they have to learn

I know, CoD4 was modern warfare but I just wanted to make that picture. I’ve been putting off playing Call of Duty 4 (I know, I know) so I can catch up on the rest of the last year’s excellent crop of games (Bioshock, Crysis, Persona 3, Mass Effect), but literally everything I’ve heard about it has been positive, which is pretty rare. I’m sure it’s in no small part due to its amazing scripted sequences and cinematic in-game experience, which were already excellent in the first Call of Duty (the beach landing was brutal). Well, the lead AI programmer from Bungie thinks so as well. As an AI programmer, he obviously is biased toward the emergent combat system of setting up a “room” and filling it with occupants (something Halo did pretty much all the way through, love it or hate it), but he admires how good a game can be when a good writer and scripting team get together and make it work for the player. A hybrid (a la Half Life 2 at its best) is probably the best approach, but it’s also the most difficult. It’s nice to hear, however, that the people on the bleeding edge of game development aren’t afraid to say they have a lot to learn from each other. → Read More

E3 2008: Call of Duty: World at War detailed by Activision

Activision chose not to participate in E3, but they still made their presence felt in LA by holding their own press conference off site. They covered a handful of titles that included Guitar Hero: World Tour (details on this coming later today), Quantum of Solace, Spider Man: Web of Shadows, Wolfenstein and Marvel Ultimate Alliance II: Fusion. Regard the latter, Activision gave a tiny tidbit that’s pretty cool. You can fuse together super hero powers to make some ginormously awesome super power. But you want to know more about Call of Duty: World at War, right? Here are a few of the major facts in case you can’t watch videos right now. Kiefer Sutherland will be voicing over one of the main characters. There will be 4-player co-op as well as two-player split screen. Everything was built off of the COD4 engine, so you know it’s going to kick some major ass. The video shows off a trailer and actual gameplay footage from two-player split screen. Enjoy. → Read More
