Yesterday, Acer’s Taiwan Sales Manager said of their tablet lineup, “They are aimed at phasing out netbooks… That’s the direction of the market.” Today, Acer has amended that statement, saying “According to recent statement from Sales Manager based in Taiwan, Acer Inc. confirms that the company will not phase out netbooks in favor of tablets.”

In an interview with Mobilized today, Acer CEO Gianfranco Lanci mentioned that they are working to create a Windows Phone 7 powered handset.
Gianfranco also talked about why they originally turned to Android (over Windows Mobile 6.5), and why Windows Phone 7 has them interested again.

Acer has unveiled a new “concept device” that they think represents the future of laptopping. I’m not so sure. And while some of all this depends on how well the keyboard and gestures are executed in their custom UI, I don’t think people are quite ready to go all-touchscreen just yet. For a smartphone it’s one thing, but when you’re trying to put all your computing on a touchscreen, it could get hairy.

Acer is announcing a set of five touch devices under the Iconia line including Windows 7 touch tablets and laptops as well as an Android model. Well this is peculiar. It looks as if Microsoft has tried, in effect, to use some of its influence to prevent Asus and Acer from creating Android- and/or Chrome OS-based devices. It’s doing so by tacking on royalty fees for Taiwan-based manufacturers (such as Asus and Acer) in order to use some of their patents relating to e-mail and multimedia. Acer is locked and loaded for a total assault on the tablet market. The company’s CEO told the WSJ that it has a whole series of tablets ready for a NYC launch event on November 23rd. Said tablets are supposed to be sold between $299 and $699. And that’s where the fun facts stop. Mr. Gianfranco Lanci didn’t mention how many tablets were coming or when they would be available. Do you need an all-in-one? Nah, probably not, but that won’t stop Acer from plopping out two new models, a 21-incher and an 18-incher for $700 and $500, respectively. Acer CEO Scott Lin believes netbooks are not dead and that they’ll see about 40 million units sold in 2010 and a similar number in 2011. He expects the high performance Atom N550 from Intel to increase speed and reduce price to about $300, which is pretty darn cheap. → Read More

This is a pretty insane-looking machine. Of course, they’re not the first to try it; Toshiba’s Libretto W100 is already out there, but dual 7-inch displays aren’t the same as a full-size laptop like this. Can this design possibly work at this form factor? I thought the Courier idea worked mainly because it was small enough that using it like a laptop wasn’t possible. As we mentioned earlier in the summer Acer plans to release an Android-based tablet. Now Acer’s Taiwan president, Scott Lin, has just said that Acer is excited to be making their tablet PCs Android-based – something to compete with the iPad. Acer will be releasing a tablet PC, based on the Wintel platform, later this year. If the market responds positively, they will release the Android version early in 2011. Acer is still focusing on it’s smartphone segment, and will ship two million in 2010 and expects 5-6 million in 2011, with the majority running Android. → Read More

Here’s another iPad alternative..well two..maybe; Acer 7 and 10-inch tablets running the new verision of Android, Android 2.2. If announced, the devices are rumored to get flash support and sport ARM chipsets. It’s speculated that Acer is shopping around telecom providers to package with the devices, because clearly, they want to compete with the iPad. What can I do to get you into a new Acer Aspire X3 or M3 Series PC? I can’t go lower on price – my manager is already busing my stones about dropping the price down to $449.99 – but how about I throw in a “space-saving chassis” and mention they’re an “appealing addition to a dorm, bedroom or home office.” No? Still nothing?
Look, the X3 series is the high-end stuff, a good, strong machine. This M3, though has only been driven one-hundred and then thousand miles by somebody I know personally who changed the graphics cards regularly. You can get an Intel or AMD processor to go with your X series or a nice AMD processor for M3. You’ve heard bad things about foreign processors? Where? Consumer Reports? They lie. They lie all the time.
