TED talk: To save the world, we have to play 21 billion hours of video games per week

Yes, you read that right. According to Jane McGonigal, we as a people need to play online games for 21 billion hours per week in order to solve the world’s problems. Real problems, too, not silly things like making sure Simon Cowell stays on for another season of American Idol. We’re talking poverty, having access to clean water and healthy food, climate change, obesity, global conflict, etc. The real deal. Hey, this is McGonigal talking, not me. I’m fine with using World of Warcraft as nothing more than a giant time sink. → Read More

Review: Creative World of Warcraft headset

Short Version: Fresh from the box, Creative’s World of Warcraft, is here! They were designed for WoW players and their performance definitely reflects that. While a tad bulky, they don’t feel heavy.
Pros
• Very Comfortable
• Hard to hear outside the headphones
• Wireless Mic works well. Does not get in the way.
• Driver allows deep customization of audio to serve your needs.

Cons
• No way to determine battery power.
• Volume buttons feel a little flimsy.
• Microphone can adjust but not very well.
• In order to download drivers, you must register the product.
• Reasonable but not impressive range.
• Not compatible with consoles (at least the PS3) → Read More

World of Warcraft hackers embrace man-in-the-middle attacks

Here’s some troubling news for my fellow World of Warcraftplayers. It seems that hackers, account thieves, and other miscreants have now embraced man-in-the-middle (MITM) attacks to further their evil ways. Blizzard says it’s not a widespread issue, and it’s rather difficult to pull off, but it’s something y’all should be aware of. → Read More

Man alive, the World of Warcraft economy is quite elastic!

There are people out there who take to World of Warcraft‘s Auction House like NYU Stern graduates take to Wall Street. The Auction House, for those unawares, is a place where WoW gamers can buy and sell in-game items using in-game currency. It can be incredibly complicated, and there are entire guides dedicated to “playing” the Auction House in order to make money. I’ve made a fair bit of coin by merely buying items at one, low price, then re-listing them on the Auction House for a new, higher price. → Read More

Yeah, Cataclysm will come out this year

It’s earnings call season, and while no news is more shocking than the fact that WWE will drop the Survivor Series, there’s something for World of Warcraft fans. And, really, who isn’t a fan of World of Warcraft. Anyhow, yeah, Cataclysm will come out this year. We’ve (and by “we” I mean the WoW community) pretty much assumed as much since the expansion was first announced, but now the money men have made it official. → Read More

World of Warcraft headphones get pricing, details

Creative is finally giving up some details on the World of Warcraft headset that they showed off at BlizzCon and CES. The price is a bit higher then we’d all like, with an MSRP of $159.99 for the wireless version, and $119.99 for the wired version. They do look cool though, I like the choice between the Horde and Alliance artwork lit up on the sides. → Read More

Let's talk about the World of Warcraft: Official Magazine for a bit

You’ll recall that, a few months ago, we mentioned that Blizzard, in collaboration with Future (the publisher responsible for Edge in the UK, among other magazines), would be creating a World of Warcraft-themed magazine. It’s called World of Warcraft: Official Magazine and I just received the very first issue, Winter 2009. From a visual standpoint, the magazine is gorgeous. It’s like looking at a work of art. These guys clearly know their way around Adobe InDesign. → Read More

Jens Pulver: World of Warcraft maniac

So I woke up this morning and logged straight into World of Warcraft, as I do every morning except Tuesdays, what with the stupid “realm maintenance” nonsense. I sold a couple of Netherweave Bags. I logged off, and soon after began another day of CrunchGear. Meanwhile, Jens Pulver, who was the UFC’s first 155-pound champion, was doing the same thing. Well, except for the CrunchGear part—he was training for a fight. → Read More

That’s right, ladies and gentlemen. Our own Nicholas Deleon hit level 75 with his Blood Elf Warlock yesterday in World of Warcraft.

Only five more levels to go until, “I’ll have nothing to do anymore,” said Deleon. → Read More

Spider-Man 4 production halted, series will be re-boot in 2012; World of Warcraft could be director's new project

It looks like production on Spider-Man 4 original story title has all but fallen apart, with director Sam Raimi pulling out, Sony freaking out and re-booting the franchise, and World of Warcraft fans wondering what to expect next. This is very exciting news! → Read More

World of Warcraft's new dungeon finder just made life worth living again

For me, the best part of Patch 3.3 in World of Warcraft is the new dungeon finder. I’ve used it a bunch in the past couple of days, and can say this: PUGing is now fun (though it’ll change the way we look at guilds). → Read More

Will World of Warcraft's Patch 3.3 drop tomorrow? Let's hope so!

Tomorrow could be a very big day for World of Warcraft fans. (And aren’t we all WoW fans?) Yes, players from Tokyo to Toledo, from London to Lima, are terribly excited about the possible release of the latest, and last, patch for Wrath of the Lich King. It’ll bring the game to version 3.3, and, more importantly, bring about the demise of Arthas. Boo, Arthas! → Read More

Did this guy just ‘beat’ World of Warcraft? (Answer: No.)

Does getting every achievement in World of Warcraft mean you’ve “beaten” the game? I wouldn’t say so, but that seems to be the meme going around, with word that a man in Taiwan has ticked off all but one achievements in the game. → Read More

Celebrating 5 years of World of Warcraft

World of Warcraft turns 5-years-old today. Back on November 23, 2004, a year before the current generation of video game systems even began (with the launch of the Xbox 360), Blizzard released the massively multi-player online game at a time when massively multi-player online games were still largely the haunt of hardcore gamers, people with fast Internet connections who were willing to pay $15 per month for access to a game that they already bought. Who can forget the message board threads: Why do I have to pay for a game that I already paid for at the store? How do you beat the game? What happens if and when I stop playing? → Read More

Blizzard starts selling in-game pets for real world money

Really big World of Warcraft news today, friends. (Why do I write so much about WoW? Oh, you know, it’s just the biggest, most successful MMO in history. Not writing about it would be like covering tech with mentioning Microsoft or Apple.) Blizzard is now selling in-game pets that you can buy with real money, $10. We’re talking cash money. Dollar dollar bill, y’all. → Read More
