Five years ago, I was working for a Belgian company that published the only weekly IT magazine in the country, Data News. I was not a reporter, but in charge of its online media products. When it was announced that Microsoft founder Bill Gates would be coming to Brussels to, for the first time, pitch Windows Vista to enterprise customers and partners at the MS Business Innovation Event, I jumped on the opportunity to convince the editor of the magazine to arrange for a camera to be placed in the conference hall so we could record his talk.

Believe it or not, but I remember actually having to argue a bit to make it happen. But I ultimately got my way, and we taped what I believe is the only footage of Gates speaking at that event. We put it up on YouTube – about a month after they were acquired by Google, come to think of it.

Anyway, I haven’t watched the video since 2006, but I kept on getting emails notifying me of comments on it on an almost-daily basis for years (to this day). There are now close to 1,900 comments on the YouTube video, mostly saying how boring Gates is – particularly in comparison to Steve Jobs’ presentation skills – and how big a turd Windows, and especially Windows Vista, really is.

Judge for yourselves, but I urge you to listen to what the man says, too.

A while ago, I decided to watch the video again myself, and I was struck by some of the things Gates talked about in that speech, so I figured I should share it on TechCrunch some day. I finally got around to it. Jump to 1:13 if your time this weekend is overly precious to you – I’ve transcribed some of things Gates said from that point on below:

The form of the computer is changing as well. It’s getting smaller, it’s getting more pervasive. If we think about the machine on our desk, it’s becoming a flat-panel device with a very large screen area. In fact, bigger and bigger, so that we can look at and deal with more information.

The portable machine is getting thinner, lighter and smaller, and in fact there’ll be a tablet form factor that you can carry around literally like a tablet of paper. And it’s comfortable enough to read off of that screen as you hold it in your hands; that it’s as good as having a magazine, a newspaper … the traditional way of reading.

If we think about using that device for a student, as it comes down over the next five years. To be only a few hundred dollars, and they’ll be able to use that instead of buying textbooks, they’ll get digital curriculum that’s superior in every way. That can be personalized, that can have video, can have interaction. The wireless Internet showing up on that tablet gives that student a chance to navigate the world of information in a very rich way.

If we think about the device in our pocket, obviously it started off as a pure-voice device. But now, with camera-like capability, starting to show maps, bringing us our mail, our schedule, becoming our digital wallet, storing all of our media, music and even videos that we want to take around. That device is getting amazingly powerful. In fact, it has the power that even a PC only had a few years ago.

I should note that I’m well aware tablet computers had been on the radar for many, many years even back in 2006, and some companies – including Microsoft and Apple – had been trying to make them a reality and a commercial success, so I wouldn’t venture as far as to say Bill Gates was laying out a vision of a future that existed only in his mind. I know he didn’t really say anything spectacular.

What is amazing to me is that Gates pretty much predicted the iPad back in November 2006, and that it took until April 2010 for the first truly commercially successful tablet to hit the market, by its rival Apple no less. The Windows 8 tablets ‘wave’ will be coming in the first half of 2012.

Enjoy the video:

Windows, Microsoft’s ubiquitous operating system, sits firmly in place.

One year after launch, licenses for the successor of Windows Vista, Windows 7, have gone over the counter no less than 240 million times.

As Microsoft points out, that makes it the fastest selling operating system in history, which is not super surprising when you consider how many were clamoring to upgrade from Vista, and XP for that matter.

Still, that’s nearly a quarter billion licenses, folks.

Microsoft says that, as of September 2010, Windows 7 was running on 93% of new consumer PCs, although we’re left guessing as to what constitutes a “new consumer PC” here.

In contrast, Windows 7 ‘only’ boasts 17% global OS market share (according to Net Applications), which means a lot of computers are still running XP and Vista.

On the bright side, growth seems to be accelerating. Last June, Microsoft announced that they had sold 150 million copies of Windows 7, so that translates to sales of about 90 million licenses in the past 5 months. A lot would have to go wrong for Microsoft not to hit 300 million copies sold by year’s end.

On a personal note, 99% of my online activities, work and play, are done on a Windows 7 PC.

It’s a genuine pleasure to use, period.

That was Microsoft COO Kevin Turner during his keynote speech at the company's Worldwide Partner Conference (WPC) in Washington today. I'm going to go out on a (not very big) limb and predict that this comment is going to come back to bite Microsoft in the ass.

Microsoft has a long, illustrious history of putting its foot in its own mouth with comments like this. But usually it's CEO Steve Ballmer making the comments. Ballmer's most famous remarks are also about the iPhone. After it was announced in 2007 (but before it launched) Ballmer seemed willing to tell anyone who would listen that the device would fail. Who can forget this video?

That was Microsoft COO Kevin Turner during his keynote speech at the company’s Worldwide Partner Conference (WPC) in Washington today. I’m going to go out on a (not very big) limb and predict that this comment is going to come back to bite Microsoft in the ass.

Microsoft has a long, illustrious history of putting its foot in its own mouth with comments like this. But usually it’s CEO Steve Ballmer making the comments. Ballmer’s most famous remarks are also about the iPhone. After it was announced in 2007 (but before it launched) Ballmer seemed willing to tell anyone who would listen that the device would fail. Who can forget this video?

And then there’s his comment to USA Today: “There’s no chance that the iPhone is going to get any significant market share. No chance.” He went on, “But if you actually take a look at the 1.3 billion phones that get sold, I’d prefer to have our software in 60% or 70% or 80% of them, than I would to have 2% or 3%, which is what Apple might get.“

The iPhone is now Apple’s most successful product in its history. Microsoft, meanwhile, is in the process of completely pivoting its mobile product offering after bleeding market share in the years after the iPhone’s release.

Of course, this comment by Turner is a bit different. He’s commenting on the antenna issues with the iPhone 4 — a problem which is very real. But comparing the problem to Windows Vista, Microsoft’s operating system in between Windows XP and Windows 7 that is generally considered to be a failure (even by many inside Microsoft), and a massive misstep by Microsoft, is foolish.

The iPhone 4 antenna issue is a scar on a beautiful woman. You don’t break up with the woman because of it, you work around it because of her other attributes. She might even put on some coverup (the bumper) so you don’t even notice it. And some may not even notice it at all.

Windows Vista is Kathy Bates in Misery.

Turner’s assumption is that the antenna issue is going to damage Apple’s brand to the point where people start jumping ship. And he hopes to have Windows Phone 7 waiting with open arms. “One of the things I want to make sure you know today is that you’re going to be able to use a Windows Phone 7 and not have to worry about how you’re holding it to make a phone call,” Turner said.

But all indications right now is that this exodus is not and will not happen. Engadget did a nice roundup of writers and experts all around the country to get their reaction to the iPhone 4 antenna issue. The consensus? No big deal.

Either all of them are brainwashed fanboys on Apple’s payroll — see, I saved you a comment right there, commenters — or they’re just giving their honest assessment. An assessment that happens to exactly match mine.

More importantly, there are still no reports of widespread returns of the product — despite flashy headlines suggesting that a recall is a certainty. I think Turner, like many people, has gotten too caught up in those headlines.

So I’m making the prediction that Turner’s comment will be one of those that gets repeated over and over again when he’s proven wrong. It’s not as bad as Palm investor Roger McNamee’s comments about the iPhone, but it could go down with some of Ballmer’s greatest hits:

Re: iPhone in 2007: There’s no chance that the iPhone is going to get any significant market share. No chance.

Re: Google in 2004 (alleged comment): “Google’s not a real company. It’s a house of cards.”

Re: social networking in 2004: “There’s a faddishness, a faddish nature about anything that basically appeals to younger people.”

Don’t look now, but Windows 7 is taking over. And while Vista is still in the number 2 spot overall, Windows 7 has reached that critical 10% milestone almost a year earlier then Vista. Having used both version of the OS, it’s pretty obvious why.

With the popularity of Windows 7, there’s been a noticeable decline in Vista’s marketshare. It’s even impacting Windows XP, with the most popular OS slipping down gradually into oblivion. Windows 7 is expected to surpass Vista sometime in June though, with the much hated OS getting replaced by the new kid. Oh, and where does OS X come in? A gradually increasing 5.3%.

Microsoft has been putting together the Windows 7 Technical Guarantee Program and it appears that it’ll likely go into effect starting July 1st of this year. It’s that program that lets you purchase a machine with Microsoft’s current operating system and then upgrade it to the newest one when it launches, similar to what the company did when getting ready for Vista.

The program will apparently be optional to OEMs, so not all companies will be participating. But you can guess that a computer with a “Free upgrade to Windows 7!” sticker will probably sell over a similar machine without.

TechARP got a hold of all the technical documents but here’s a quick rundown.

Good on new PCs with Vista pre-installed purchased after July 1, 2009.

Versions will synch – Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium, Vista Business to Windows 7 Professional, Vista Ultimate to Windows 7 Ultimate, etc.

32-bit to 64-bit upgrades not supported, but clean install will be allowed.

Windows XP to Windows 7 upgrades not supported, but clean install will be allowed. Also, your OEM will have to be participating in the XP downgrade program.

The program dates could change based on when Windows 7 will actually be available but this should give everyone a pretty good idea of what’s coming.

Here’s a tip: next time your company creates a snazzy marketing slogan make sure it isn’t misleading. Microsoft may be liable to the tune of $8.5 billion as a result of so many people buying “Vista Capable” PCs in the run up to Vista’s release in January, 2007. The problem is that, to the average person, “Vista Capable” means, “Hey, I can run Vista.” And you can, but only the most basic “this is Vista?” version.

That $8.5 billion figure is part of an ongoing class-action lawsuit filed against Microsoft last year. A whole series of document—“heavily redacted,” says Computer World—relating to the case was released yesterday.

How did the lawyers come up with $8.5 billion, which is approximately double Niger’s GDP (it’s random fact Friday, by the way)? Well, that’s how much they estimate it would cost to upgrade all those “Vista Capable” PCs so that they could adequately run a “premium version” of Vista. That amounts to 1GB of RAM and a graphics card capable of running Aero. Or, around $150 to upgrade each desktop and $245-$590 to upgrade each laptop. At that price, you might as well buy a new laptop, right?

As you might expect, Microsoft doesn’t exactly agree, saying it would be, essentially, giving people a free Premium PC even though they only paid for a non-Premium PC.

Oh, how Microsoft wishes they could just use that Men in Black mind eraser device so that we’re all, “What’s Vista?”

This is the Phoenix. See how it resembles the mythical creature?

As if being green were some passing fad, HP announced two new desktops and a display today. The HP Pavillion Verde Special Edition a6645f (really?) and Pavillion Phoenix SE a6655f have energy-efficient AMD procs and they’re Energy Star qualified. The SE desktops can handle up to 5GB of RAM, Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit edition, 15-in-1 card reader placed up front, and a SuperMulti DVD burner with LightScribe. The Phoenix boasts an AMD Phenom X4 9150e Quad Core proc and 640GB HDD. The Verde has an AMD Athlon X2 4850e Dual Core proc and 500GB HDD. Riveting, we know.

The former will start at $659 and will be sold exclusively through Best Buy starting November 9. The Verde will be available starting November 9 exclusively at Circuit City starting $579.

The aforementioned display is a massive 25.5-inch widescreen with a built-in 15-in-1 card reader, 2-megapixel webcam, built-in speakers, “multiple” USB ports, HDMI inputs and a high contrast ratio. The HP w2558hc is also Energy Star qualified. It’s available now for $599.

Wait. This is what qualifies as being “green?” An energy-efficient proc, various power settings and a 100 percent recyclable packaging constitutes being green and leaving less of a carbon footprint? Wow.

This enormous and allegedly unsolicited blog entry by an “ordinary Joe developer” (is he related to the plumber?) details some of the under-the-hood stuff that’s going on with Windows 7 development. Although Ballmer has described 7 as being “Windows Vista with clean-up in user interface [and] improvements in performance,” this guy seems to think it’s a little more than that. I nursed my hope that 7 would be a completely different experience for a while, but now it seems less and less likely by the day. Still, it seems that MS has changed up the strategy for putting things together, emphasizing smaller teams with less higher-up input. Teams called “Triads” — one developer, one tester, and one program manager — chisel away at problems and work independently. The poster says this leads to a more integrated approach to creating a feature, and more transparency in management means decisions can be made in good time with enough visibility for the teams to accommodate them. He says they’re also not afraid to lean down in order to ship faster, which can only be a good thing considering how enormous Vista has gotten. In fact, it looks as if the time it’s taken to get Vista to a real working state may be enough that you can skip right over it with their blessing. Make this something people can put on a netbook, people. Make it something people want to upgrade to. Whether you look on Vista as a qualified success or an utter failure, we can all agree it was more of the same. We’ve really had the same Windows for a decade now. We want to love it, give us a reason! [via El Reg]

What sounds like a headline from The Onion is from the real story of an area man who did get Windows Vista to work with his printer, but not without the help of Microsoft software engineers. PI reporter Todd Bishop first brought word of the man’s trouble not long ago on the PI blog and local geeks wanted to help, as Seattle-area geeks tend to do. One helper was a Microsoft test engineer from the Windows printing group, who went out of his way to visit the man and fix the problem. To be fair, it wasn’t really a Vista problem, as the man was installing the original XP drivers on the Vista system, which didn’t work. After removing the old drivers and installing new Vista drivers, they were able to make it work. However the point remains that of all the work put into Vista, shouldn’t there be something that tells you when you’re doing it wrong?

Despite what others might say, over the weekend I broke down and upgraded to Windows Vista Ultimate. I hit a couple driver-related snags, but was able to recover no problem. However, while I’ve been testing systems for months now with the OS on it and I know my way around Vista, I was dreading the upgrade. That got me thinking: What would my dad do (who’s pretty tech savvy, but a tad short on patience) or some completely normal non-tech-savvy person who’s heard about all the Vista beauty, but is afraid of the cost and possible inconvenience the upgrade might cause? You could always drag it into a CompUSA or let the chuckleheads at Best Buy do it while they steal your amateur pr0n and music. Or you can let YourTechOnline.com take over your system remotely and watch their every move. The Canadian-based company offers all kinds of tech support options, but for $139.99 they’ll take over your PC and determine its Vista compatibility, figure out your backup requirements, start and verify the backup, format the hard drive and install Vista, verify the install, and finally get to restoring your stuff. You’ll have to supply your own copy of Vista, of course. Not a bad way to go if you’re not the DIY type. YourTechOnline.com

If you don’t have anything nice to say about Windows Vista then don’t bother writing about it. That’s the general consensus on a certain post on eWeek’s Microsoft Watch. One of the writers over there recounted a story in which his sister bought a Sony Vaio laptop with Vista installed that had a Windows Experience Index score of 3.3—considering the laptop cost $1,500, shouldn’t the score be a little higher? As it turns out, the graphics card memory was responsible for the low score. His main point: buying a Vista PC shouldn’t have to be a $2,000+ affair. And that’s when the fanboys tore him apart. Again, his main point was just that machines that play nice with Vista shouldn’t cost as much as they do. Then many of the commenters viciously attacked his character. Think, “Dude, you clearly hate Microsoft, so why don’t you go go work for Apple.” So because he voiced his opinion on how Vista might improve, he’s gutted. It seems there’s been a slight delay to address some last minute technical issues. You’ll be able to play against Xbox owners on Live and against fellow Windows users for free.
One of the many wows of Windows Vista is SideShow, a technology that outputs information like e-mail onto screens other than a PC monitor. Using SideShow, this Ricavision Bluetooth remote control lets you navigate through your Vista PC’s media library, schedule TV recordings and read your e-mail without so much as leaving the couch (so long as you’re within 328 feet of the PC). The remote’s 2.5-inch QVGA LCD is large enough to display all of that info without straining your eyesight; who wouldn’t want to control the music without having to deal with a clunky mouse and keyboard? Sure, such a fancy remote costs $200, but think of how jealous the neighbors will be when they see that, not only does your remote have a screen but that it can interact with your Vista PC. I imagine all they’ll be able to say is “wow.” Product Page [Ricavision via I4U News]

Samsung’s Q1P ultra mobile PC (UMPC) is the first such device to receive Windows Vista certification. Now that it’s Vista certified, it can sit at the cool kids’ lunch table at school. UMPCs haven’t exactly lit the world on fire (just look at the price—$1,300? No thanks), but it’s good to see more and more devices support Microsoft’s version of OS X. The Q1P’s stats are fairly plain, with a 60GB hard drive and 1GB of memory. The seven-inch touchscreen is plenty spacious, though, with which you can doodle the hours away then convert your handwritten notes into searchable text. Funny, Samsung wants the Q1P to be a hit with businesses and if there’s a group that’s more averse to using Vista than businesses IT departments, I haven’t seen it.
