It’s just that it’s kind of a strange thing to see making a big debut when people are more cautious than usual with their money, and PC gaming (as ever) is being declared dead. But after our hands-on at CES, we were convinced that it was at the very least impressive and well-built, and apparently enough other people thought so that Razer sold out almost immediately.

Now, the actual number sold isn’t mentioned, but Razer isn’t a small company and they were going all-out with this thing at CES. But we’ve seen devices launch to sales of dozens, so a strong response to a launch like this is definitely good news.

The company shared the news on their Facebook page, and urges prospective buyers to sign up for a notification email list. Hopefully that $2800 won’t burn a hole in your pocket in the meantime.

Personally, I’m more excited about their plans to disconnect the touchscreen and LCD keys from the laptop, making a customizable piece of hardware you can use with your existing PC. I’m not really down with the small-screen gaming and I like my keyboards a little meatier, so the Blade isn’t for me — but I do have gear envy when I see all those future toys on the side.

We couldn’t go to CES and not see what Razer had on display, and fortunately, CEO Min-Liang Tan was on hand to take us on a quick tour through the company’s booth. In between talking about the company’s new gaming accessories and their Synapse cloud storage system for game settings, we were (thankfully) able to get our hands on the Project Fiona tablet and the Razer Blade gaming notebook.

For the second year in a row, Razer has come to CES with the aim of disrupting mobile PC gaming, but the Project Fiona tablet couldn’t look any more different than its predecessor. It’s a surprisingly light machine, but Fiona was more than enough to handle traipsing through the world of Skyrim with its Core i7 processor. Even so, Devin the indie game maven was particularly enamored that he was able to demo a bit of Terraria on camera.

Razer is testing the waters with the Fiona, and Tan tells us that it could enter production in one form or another if it gets enough of a positive response. Look at the Switchblade for example — though the actual handheld never quite materialized, the concept was integrated into the company’s insane Blade gaming notebook.

We’ve covered the Blade before, but actually seeing it in person is a completely different experience. The computer itself is remarkably thin and light (not to mention incredibly spec’d) but people’s eyes are understandably drawn to the Switchblade UI embedded to the right of the keyboard. While the Switchblade LCD keys don’t depress as deeply as those on the regular keyboard (I’m decidedly picky when it comes to that stuff), the overall experience was one has a lot of potential.

Razer is courting developers with an SDK that will launch alongside the Blade itself in an effort to drive interest in creating apps for the platform, and to that end the company will also be distributing a standalone USB version of their Switchblade UI available to developers. It’s not out of the realm of possibility that a consumer model could eventually hit store shelves — Tan wouldn’t comment on products in production, but he admits that it would be totally doable.

Anyway, this is one of our longer hands-on videos since it encompasses most of Razer’s booth, so sit back with some popcorn and enjoy. Trust me, if you’re a gamer, you’ll want to stick around for the whole thing.

They've been running under their own steam this whole time as what's called a "successful business," but they've decided to take a big funding round to expand their reach.

IDG-Accel, specifically their joint China Capital Fund, has chipped in to the tune of $50 million, a minority investment that allows the fund to join the board at Razer, and allows Razer to expand further into the whole-systems business, something that requires considerably more R&D and space to manage.

Gaming hardware company Razer has been on our radar for quite a long time: they’ve made high-end gaming peripherals like mice and keyboards for years, and have recently expanded into more esoteric devices and game-specific partnerships. They’ve been running under their own steam this whole time as what’s called a “successful business,” but they’ve decided to take a big funding round to expand their reach.

IDG-Accel, specifically their joint China Capital Fund, has chipped in to the tune of $50 million, a minority investment that allows the fund to join the board at Razer, and allows Razer to expand further into the whole-systems business, something that requires considerably more R&D and space to manage.

Razer tells us that the new money and board member shouldn’t affect day-to-day operation, and says the investment was “fairly straightforward,” though they wouldn’t say whether it was contingent on any goals, markets, or products.

The money will largely be used for R&D, particularly in gaming user interfaces and systems. The company has been putting more effort into partnership deals, like StarCraft 2 branded mice and keyboards, and most recently they put out a full-on gaming laptop, the Blade, with a built-in touchscreen and LCD keys among other things. Presumably more systems like this or product partnerships with larger OEMs will be enabled by the cash infusion.

And the fact that the fund is China-focused is not trivial; the Chinese gaming market is exploding and is considerably more PC-based than the US and Japan, where consoles are more popular. PC gaming is the primordial ooze from which Razer emerged, and although it is still going strong here, it’s going stronger in China and Razer likely senses the magnitude of the opportunity.

If you haven’t yet heard of the Blade (or if you’re suffering from a sticker shock-induced bout of amnesia), it’s a powerhouse of a gaming rig crammed into an aluminum body that’s less than an inch thick. It’s certainly no slouch when it comes to specs: it sports 2.8 Ghz Intel Core i7, 8GB of RAM, a 2 GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M video card, and an 17-inch LED-backlit display. Oh, and who could forget the 10 context-sensitive touch keys to the right of the keyboard, which change depending on the game currently being played?

In fact, the Blade has only gotten better since last we saw it. Thanks to a considerable amount of media love for the gaming notebook, Razer President Min-Liang Tan says that the company has been able to renegotiate component prices and swapped the 320GB HDD for a 256GB solid-state drive without further inflating the price tag. Is that going to be enough to sway potential buyers? Probably not, but if you have $2,800 to burn, I can think of worse things to blow it on.

The state of the prototypes isn’t mentioned, but I have to guess that they’ve probably been working on nailing down driver support and custom software for the customizable keys and touchscreen. And without proper support from developers (like, say, the ability to show your ammo count, lives left, that sort of thing), the Blade is really just an ordinary expensive laptop.

Sure, they can sell them for a substantial bit of cash, but there are easier ways to steal laptops. Maybe the thieves are just big Razer fans. At any rate, if you have any clues or see one of the laptops on the market, contact cult@razerzone.com.

Announced today at PAX Prime, Razer’s new Blade gaming notebook packs a whole lot of gaming horsepower into an aluminum body that’s less than an inch thick.

As one would imagine from a company so heavily focused on improving the gaming experience, the Blade doesn’t skimp on components. A 2.8 Ghz Intel Core i7 processor powers the whole thing, with 8GB of RAM, a 2 GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M video card, and a 17-inch LED-backlit display to round out the package.

Seasoned PC gamers may scoff — they’ve seen their fair share of gaming laptops, after all — but the addition of Razer’s Switchblade gaming UI take the Blade above and beyond the realm of the ordinary gaming machine. First seen in an ambitious concept video last January, Switchblade now resides in the space to the right of the Blade’s keyboard. A set of 10 “dynamic adaptive tactile keys” provide quick access to in-game commands that change depending on what you’re playing. Below that is a two-function LCD that displays pertinent game info when a mouse is being used, and becomes a multi-touch trackpad when one isn’t.

Razer is touting the Blade as the world’s first “true” gaming laptop, and while I don’t particularly buy that distinction, it’s a machine that certainly doesn’t make any compromises. The hardware and design are absolutely on point, and with a price tag of $2,800, it’s the kind of machine that most gamers will only be able to dream of.

Most are traditional stereo headphones with “virtual surround sound” — a process that adds depth and directionality, but delivers it through two speakers. Headphones like Tritton’s and Psyko’s actually use multiple drivers to simulate being in a room with, say, five speaker channels and a subwoofer. They’ve had mixed success, but maybe Razer will have more luck. Their upcoming Tiamat headset uses no less than 10 individual drivers (5 in each earpiece) to produce what they are saying is a world-first 7.1 sound experience.

I’ll believe it when I hear it, though: the Megalodon sounded great with the right inputs, but failed to “upscale” plain stereo well. Hopefully the Tiamat handles that better.

The new headset has a front, rear, side, and center channel in each earpiece along with a subwoofer. You can adjust each channel separately on the handsome puck. There’s a retractable microphone, of course.

The Tiamat 7.1 has a little sister, the Tiamat 2.2, a virtual-surround headset with a similar design. Looks like an updated version of the Chimaera.

They should be shipping later this year; the 7.1 costs $180 and the 2.2 will cost $100. More details can be found at the Tiamat microsite.

Rigid build means if they don’t fit, they don’t fit

Full review:

Really quick: the Chimaera comes in two flavors, the $129.99 stereo version (which is what I have here) and the $199.99 virtual surround version (which I don’t have). You can see a comparison here, but what you’re missing out on is virtual surround (questionably useful but occasionally nice in games), digital optical and RCA in, an on-device equalizer, and an improved, 5.8GHz wireless transmitter (should have less competition on that frequency). So, onwards.

The Chimaera is a large, plastic-y production, with deep cloth-lined earcups trimmed with leather. There’s a flip-down mic on the left earcup that is flexible and positionable. Both earcups have four buttons on them – mute and power/sync on the outside and audio/mic volume on the back.

Connected to your 360 or PC is the combination charge stand and transmitter. Again there is no attempt at miniaturization (as opposed to AKG’s, for instance); it’s more of a display stand, meant to be prominently placed. On the stand you’ll find on-off and sync buttons, and (in the stereo version’s case) a single 3.5mm input. It has to be plugged in — no USB here.

Now observe this picture and tell me whether you think these are a little large, or if you think I just have a tiny head:

No, I’m pretty sure these things are huge. They’re not particularly heavy, for their size at least, but they do feel big on your head. The fit is hit or miss: there’s not a lot of latitude in how your head can be shaped for these things to sit on your properly. In my case they tend to grip me far more tightly above my ear than below. It’s not quite to the point where it breaks the seal, but I can definitely improve the sound by pressing them in a bit at the bottom. I didn’t have this trouble with a similarly large pair of headphones, the Logitech G35s, which fit very well despite their size.

Sitting them on their stand is super easy and I never had any trouble getting the charge to start. It displays its status prominently on the stand; there’s no tiny LED to look for. Razer claims 12 hours of battery life from these, and while I didn’t time it carefully, I’m quite sure I got at least 8 of them, and I didn’t take it down to the point where they shut themselves off. They shut off automatically if there’s no input for 10 minutes, so no need to worry about manually shutting them off if you have to run out.

I found the sound to be good, but rather heavy on the bass, which was right up front and tended to overpower other parts of the soundscape. Generally this isn’t a bad thing in games, but it’s a pain to have to re-EQ your music when you’re wearing them. Isolation would be good if they fit your head correctly, so mileage will vary there.

Range is as expected for a plain RF transmitter: you’ll want to be within 20-30 feet with no walls, and more than one wall (in my experience) tended to break up the signal.

There are a lot of buttons, only a few of which you’ll be using with any frequency. The mute and mic mute buttons are well enough, but the Sync button is very prominently placed for such a seldom-used function. The volume buttons on the back of the cups control volume (on the right earcup, very handy) and mic volume. Instead of the latter, I’d have preferred media control buttons like those on the G35 and others. When you’re connected wirelessly to your computer or hi-fi, it pays to have a remote on your head. But as these are also very 360-oriented, it’s an understandable omission.

Conclusion

The stereo Chimaeras overpromise, I think. Their bulk is somewhat off-putting, and sound is a mixed bag — good for games, a little too bottom-heavy for music. For an all-purpose PC headset, I’m not convinced it’s worth the $130, though it’s more in its element leaning back on the couch playing 360. Unfortunately there’s a lot of competition here, and decent headsets like the Gamecom are available for far less. The surround-sound Chimaera sports more features and of course virtual surround, which sets it apart from the competition, but the stereo version is in a rather awkward position. Check out the more expensive version or save a little cash and get something with less pomp.

The Old Republic is, potentially, every Star Wars-loving gamer’s dream. Own your own ship, travel the galaxy, pick a side in an epic conflict… if they pull it off. Razer’s taking the chance they won’t, though, and have put out a few peripherals customized for the Old Republic experience.

First you’ve got the keyboard, which has a built-in touchscreen with 10 LCD buttons over it – they can be mapped or macro’d however you want and the graphics for each button will change depending on how you assign them. Will this be useful for other games? Only if they work with Razer. It does look pretty sweet, though.

Next, the mouse, which is a Jedi-themed mutation of their Naga MMO mouse. 12 buttons on the side for your macro pleasure.

And then there’s the headset, looking to me like a rebuilt Carcharias or Piranha. It’s got a nice big hexagon for a shape, so everyone will know you love shapes like that.

All three come with alternative decorative plates, so you can be Sith or Jedi. In this world, though, there are also two factions: people who know the symbols for Sith and Jedi, and people who don’t. It’s a war.

More info is being slowly trickled out over at Razer. OR watch our hands-on video here!

We first saw the Hydra, then called the Sixense (after the company that originally developed it) back at CES 2010 almost a year and a half ago. I was impressed with it then, as it felt more natural and responsive than a Wiimote (what doesn’t now?), and used a genuinely different and powerful technology. It’s based on magnetic detection of the controller, instead of optical, and it felt great then, though they had some work to do on latency. It seems like they’ve finished polishing it off, because it’s headed our way in June.

It’ll detect position and rotation quite accurately, and each Wii Nunchuk-like controller has an analog stick and four buttons.

The Hydra controller will be open for pre-orders in May, and it comes in a special Portal 2 bundle; they actually worked with Valve to make this thing work extra well with Portal 2, and have done so (they told me back in the day) with a number of other big games and developers. It says 125 games are compatible out of the box, and they’re listed here.

The Portal 2 Bundle includes the game, the Hydra (base and two controllers), and some special DLC levels, and will set you back $140; no word on the non-bundle version, but I’d guess it’ll cost around $90 or $100. There’s more information at the Hydra minisite.

When the Razer Switchblade first showed up at CES, I have to say I was pretty skeptical — and I’m still skeptical now. Not that they won’t put this thing out, but that they’ll be able to do so for any kind of affordable price. Still, it’s good to know they’re taking serious steps to make it a reality. Today they announced a partnership with Intel and Chinese gaming biggie Tencent to provide some launch readiness for the experimental gaming device.

The agreement is basically a three-way partnership to make Tencent’s popular games work perfectly on the platform — that means optimized drivers by Intel, customized assets by Tencent, and of course the hardware from Razer. It certainly looks cool, but until we give it a real try, it’s impossible to say whether it lives up to its promises.

It’s good news for rich Chinese gamers, but will we see similar partnerships on this side of the Pacific? Hard to say. The hot emerging market right now is tablets, and everyone is trying to sell a million on iOS. Will there be room for this comparatively hardcore gaming device? And will gaming companies, already torn between PC, consoles, handhelds, and mobile/tablets, want to further extend their development juice? I guess we’ll find out.

Here’s the full press release:

RAZER, TENCENT, AND INTEL FORM A STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP FOR PC GAMING IN CHINA

Three of the largest technology brands in China to optimize games for mobile play on the Razer Switchblade

Beijing, China – April 13th, 2011 – Razer, the world’s leading high-end precision gaming brand, with Tencent, China’s leading provider of games and internet services, and Intel, world leader in computing innovation are proud to announce a strategic partnership aimed at expanding the entertainment possibilities for Chinese gamers. The Razer Switchblade concept has been designated as the flagship concept to lead this mobile PC gaming revolution.

All Chinese gamers can rejoice, as their favorite Tencent titles like Dungeon and Fighter, Crossfire, League of Legends, QQ Speed and many more are optimized for portable play on the Razer Switchblade. You can now fight, shoot, cast spells, race or just socialize with friends while on-the-go, as Tencent strives to ensure their software delivers the best gaming experience through perfect synergy with Razer and Intel’s hardware.

“This is the first time three of the biggest technology brands in China have come together,” said Min-Liang Tan, CEO and Creative Director, Razer, “we’re united by a common goal to deliver the best portable gaming experience to as many gamers as possible. With the Razer Switchblade’s adaptive tactile keyboard, Intel’s range of processors, and Tencent’s popular games, this is no lofty goal – it’s happening right now.”

The Razer Switchblade concept was created from the ground up by Razer designers and engineers, focused on enhancing the entire user experience of playing PC games on a handheld device. It features an ultra-sensitive multi-touch screen, adaptive tactile keyboard, and an intelligent user interface that adjusts the configuration and key layout on-the-fly based on game content and user requirements. And at the heart of the concept device is an Intel Atom processor designed for next generation small form factor computing.

“Intel is committed to creating and extending the personal computing experience for end-users together with our ecosystem partners,” said Ian Yang, President, Intel China. “The collaboration with Razer, Tencent and Intel will provide optimized experiences for the rapidly growing gaming community in China.”

“Like Razer, we want gamers to have just as much fun playing our games on-the-go as they would at home or at a PC café,” said Mark Ren, SEVP, Tencent. “We’re really excited to bring the revolutionary Razer Switchblade to millions gamers connected to our games, allowing them to experience our world of fun anytime, anywhere”, said Steven Ma, VP of Tencent.

Razer, Intel, and Tencent are committed to growing China’s PC gaming market, and will be announcing exciting updates to this strategic partnership in the months to come.

About the Razer Switchblade Concept

The Razer Switchblade concept is a revolutionary mobile PC gaming device that allows gamers to play on-the-go without giving up the precision and control normally associated with a desktop gaming system. Integrating a multi-touch seven-inch screen, an innovative adaptive tactile keyboard and housing the next generation Intel Atom processor, the Razer Switchblade concept delivers the full desktop experience in a netbook-sized solution.

Gamers at the very least will be disappointed, though they’re handy for the occasional TV show or spontaneous music-sharing moment. Features: Extremely compact design 360-degree sound distribution USB-rechargeable internal batteries MSRP: $59.99 Pros: Really very tiny Cool-looking little guys Plenty of clarity in the high and mids Cons: Bass pretty much absent Proprietary cable Can’t turn off stupid lights Full review: Well, yes and no. You need to control your expectations, but they’re quite effective for their size, and combined with the fact that they’re powered and super-portable, this makes them a pretty decent buy. I tested them out on a few tracks from my library, and the sound is clear and quite loud, though the low end is pretty much not there. It’s kind of implied in that there’s a pretty smooth fall-off from the higher frequencies, so you can work out what it should sound like, and I didn’t notice any distortion from the speakers trying to hit lower than they should. We watched Raiders of the Lost Ark, and although of course the lower frequencies of, say, plane propellers and engine noise was only slightly audible, everything else came through loud and clear. Explosions, dialogue, and music all sounded solid, though I think that the mid-highs tended to overpower the rest. The 360-degree sound distribution is sort of a silly feature when you think about it, but it’s a handy way to let your laptop or MP3 player be a quick-setup jukebox in the kitchen, say, or at the beach. The real result, of course, is that half the speakers’ power is being directed away from you, which is just hugely inefficient. There are blue lights that fade in and out while charging, and just stay on most of the time otherwise. Why can’t I turn them off?! What if I’m watching a movie in the dark! The cable is a special one from Razer: it’s USB and 1/8″ audio on one side, and two micro-USB plugs on the other, which plug into the speakers and convey sound and power. It’s a little confusing at first, and of course if you lose the cable, you’re screwed.
^In the corners, there.^

I was excited to check these out when they were first announced, but when they arrived, I was flabbergasted by just how tiny they were. I mean really. They’re very small. As you can see in the photo below, they’re just about half the size of a can of soda. Can these things really produce any sound?

Well, yes and no.
Fortunately the Feroxes (Feroxii?) come with a cute little carrying case that just fits them and the cable. It’s not pocketable or anything (it’s about pop can-sized), but it’ll easily fit a laptop bag or satchel.

Conclusion:

These speakers are cool-looking, surprisingly compact, and produce a totally usable sound for some situations. On the other hand, if you’re at all interested in using them for serious gaming or media consumption, you’d be much better served spending your cash on a pair of good portable headphones. You can get the Nox Audio Specialist for $70, a great buy. The Ferox speakers are cool, and they certainly aren’t bad, but they don’t really hit the spot they’re aiming for; as a complement to a media player or tablet, they’re nice, but for anything more serious than that, there are better options.

Looking for a new headset for your 360 audio pleasures? You might have heard of the Chimaera when it was announced back at CES. They weren’t quite fully baked back then, but they’re ready for your dollar now. I just hope you’re well-provided with said dollars, because these wireless surround sound headphones ain’t cheap.

At $200 (or, insanely, €200), they’re pretty expensive, though. I’d shop around a bit, but if you have the cash to spare, these are probably quite decent.

If surround-sound isn’t your bag (they’re “virtual” surround, but that generally sounds pretty good), you can get the stereo version for much cheaper: $129.

The premise of the Anansi is that it’s a keyboard designed to create the maximum number of macros possible. It does this by having not only a few dedicated macro keys on the far left, but by having a full seven keys below the space bar dedicated to imitating such combinations of modifier keys as “Shift+Alt,” “Alt-Control,” just plain “Control,” and so on. Seven of these keys! You can customize them just like every other key on the board — Razer’s robust configuration utility allows you to set the Y key to type a Q if you want, or to perform a 50-stroke macro. So in the end, these keys are really just extra keys of no particular merit. They are located conveniently under your thumb, though, which makes them a natural fit for modifiers. The keys are regular membrane switches, not mechanical like the Black Widow or scissor-switch like the Lycosa. Personally, I prefer either of those to this feel, but that’s a personal preference. The keys on this (and similar) keyboards just feel mushy after using a mechanical keyboard, and unnecessarily deep after typing on scissor switches. Overall there’s just not much to recommend the Anansi over its numerous competitors, including those by Razer. For an all-purpose keyboard either the Lycosa or Black Widow work better, and for macro fiends the Sidewinder keyboards (and, as someone invariably mentions, the options from Roccat) are just as good an option. For a hundred bucks you can, and should, get more keyboard than this. Product page: Razer Anansi keyboard

Backlighting is easy to configure, and can be quite bright. You can also set it to rotate through the colors, which is cool for a minute but gets old fast.

There are no USB or audio ports on the keyboard, which is disappointing. Gamers use lots of accessories and are generally power users; their keyboard should be a versatile tool. The Anansi is really a one-trick pony, although if you’re a macro guy and have lots of taunts, obscure moves, or what have you, the thumb modifiers could come in handy.

Conclusion

Overall there’s just not much to recommend the Anansi over its numerous competitors, including those by Razer. For an all-purpose keyboard either the Lycosa or Black Widow work better, and for macro fiends the Sidewinder keyboards (and, as someone invariably mentions, the options from Roccat) are just as good an option. For a hundred bucks you can, and should, get more keyboard than this.

The Death Adder is one of them; I reviewed it a couple years back, after it had already been out for some time, and although I love me some G500 and Xai, the Death Adder is still number one with me. When I look back over all the mice I’ve reviewed in my time, one particular thing always comes to mind: “What the hell are you doing with your life?” But then I get over it, dry my tears, and continue thinking about how many mice come and go, but there are a few that still stand out as the best. On account of its complexion. The funny thing is, it was already black. Yes, I’m looking at mine right now, definitely black.

It does have a white scroll wheel, though. So they’ve fixed that. And there’s a new non-slip rubber coating on the side, where the old one had slick plastic. The logo doesn’t light up anymore, either. I’m okay with that.

At any rate, it’s still a great mouse, and now you can buy one for the same price they were at three years ago: $60! Yay!

A good pair of portable speakers is hard to find. Well, not that hard, but non-powered speakers that produce good sound and yet fit comfortably in a bag aren’t exactly littering the ground. Razer looks to remedy this with their new Ferox sound system, a pair of egg-shaped speakers that open up at the top and provide “360 degree omni-directional acoustics.”

We’ll forgive them for using that phrase. They have acknowledged they have an overstatement problem, and they are going to see someone about it.

So in other words, the speakers aren’t directional, which may or may not be a good thing. Filling a small room with sound will be easy, but you also can’t really be the only one hearing it, which means their usability in public is somewhat reduced. They have rechargeable batteries in ‘em, which are supposed to last 12 hours, which is nice, but also one more thing you have to worry about.

The mechanism that rises up at the top looks impressive, but who knows whether it produces decent sound? At $60 (available nowish) they’re not too much of a risk either way, but we’ll get some to review and let you know whether you should pick some up or just stick to headphones.

Short version: This new mechanical keyboard from Razer is clicky and attractive, but some layout and design choices irk me, and this thing ain’t cheap. Features: Specially-designed mechanical keys with low-pressure actuation 5 additional macro keys, 5 backlight brightness settings Gaming mode and on-the-fly macro recording USB, microphone and headphone ports MSRP: $130 (Ultimate), $80 (no backlight or ports) Pros: Solid to type on Clicky sound for those of you who like that kind of thing Ports and media keys work no problem Cons: F-key clusters too close together Key labels can be confusing Macro lovers may want more Full review: The famous clicking noise of mechanical keyboards is prominent here. I find that different keys have different timbres you can actually pick out: the space bar is lower, the backspace key louder, and the number keys have a different sound than the letters. I’m not crazy – it’s actually just a function of the angle you press the key at and the shape of the key itself. At any rate, the sound is nice and slightly varied. But those looking for a quiet keyboard should move on. I found the labeling on the keys distracting. Razer uses a sort of squared-off typeface for the key caps, and while readability isn’t really a problem (I think we all know where the letters are by now), they have opted to put the shift characters on the bottom instead of on the top, something that bugs me, though it more looks wrong to me than causes much of an effect. It does make me second guess myself occasionally. There is a blue backlight behind the whole thing, or rather behind the keys individually, and the lighting options are off, dim, bright, really bright, and pulse. I found pulse just incredibly distracting, and the brightest setting far too much so. I would have preferred something like the WASD lighting from the Lycosa, or a customizable zone-lighting system. Why can’t I light up just WASD and the numbers? Or the numpad and macro keys?

Full review:

I was excited for the new mechanical keyboard from Razer; my two favorite keyboards of the last few years are the SteelSeries 7G and Razer Lycosa, and I figured this one couldn’t help but put the two together. As it turns out, it’s not quite the monster I thought it’d be, but it’s a solid and good-looking keyboard anyway. I’m using Razer’s product shots since mine (except for the above one) didn’t turn out very well.

The keyboard itself is a nice wedge of glossy plastic, and the main layout change you’ll notice is the five macro keys on the left side. As I often have occasion to say, I’m not a big macro guy, but I appreciate them nonetheless. From the side, it’s apparent that the keys have a shallow arc to them, as opposed to the flat layout of keyboards like the Sidewinder X4. The 7G also has a slight curve, but this is more pronounced (and not visible in the pictures, for some reason). It seems to put the top two rows of keys slightly closer to your fingers — not a bad thing, but worth mentioning.

The famous clicking noise of mechanical keyboards is prominent here.

I also found the location of the “function” button, which allows access to the media and mode keys, to be troublesome. Most of the mode buttons are for hitting with the right hand, yet the key to activate them is also a right-hand key. You can thumb-index it for the gaming, brightness, and sleep function buttons, but it’s extremely awkward to pinky-thumb it for the media keys. If the function and Windows keys switched places (the 7G has this), you could hit the function key easily with your left pinky and then easily reach any of the functions with your right hand. As it is, you have to think about it, take your hand off the thing, cross over, and worry about whether you’re going to hit the context button by mistake. Take my advice, Razer: switch these two and never look back.

And another thing! The F-keys are way too close together. There’s an inch-long gap between F1 and ESC that could have been used to make the three F-key clusters (1-4, 5-8, 9-12) more distinct. As it is, it looks almost like a mistake on the keyboard the way they’re spaced. If you don’t look, it’s hard to tell whether you’re hitting F4 or F5.

The USB and audio ports are on the right, which is of course where most people’s mice are as well. Wouldn’t you want the cables protruding from the other side? That might be more a matter of taste. At any rate, they work fine, though of course the USB isn’t high-speed. Plenty useful for wireless accessories and thumbdrives.

Conclusion

As I wrote this, I felt more and more that this particular keyboard is a “don’t buy” at the moment. There are too many other good keyboards on the market, and even if you were to opt for the significantly lower-priced basic Black Widow (no backlight, no ports), I still don’t feel you’re getting their best. I still prefer the aging but sleek Lycosa over this, and the 7G is both more tastefully designed and better laid out. It’s not a bad keyboard, but in the face of truly excellent competition, I just can’t recommend the BlackWidow.
