But what about China?

Well, unlike the identical Droid RAZR for Verizon and the UK version (just RAZR), the Chinese model of the phone differentiates itself in terms of design, reports Unwired View. The corners are rounded off a bit more, and a TD-SCDMA radio’s been thrown into the mix, meaning the phone is headed for China Mobile.

It also seems like the bezel material is more of a silver than the gunmetal color we’re seeing here in the States, but that could merely be the flash lightening things up. On Verizon’s model, the ear piece is also silver, whereas this Chinese model seems to lack that finishing touch.

Specs wise, things haven’t really changed. You’ll still find the same 960×540 qHD display, 8-megapixel camera, Kevlar fiber casing, and Android 2.3 Gingerbread. In terms of availability, this version of the RAZR has just made its way through China’s version of the FCC, so it could potentially hit shelves pretty soon.

Sorry, Verizon: looks like your exclusivity on the Motorola Droid RAZR might not last all that long. Based on the finer details of some docs pulled fresh from the good ol’ FCC, it looks like AT&T might be getting a RAZR of their very own.

At first glance, there’s not much to be gleaned. The device is constantly referred to as the “IHDP56ME2″ or “M0C2E”, rather than “OMG AT&T RAZR LOOK!” or anything along those lines. It does have all of AT&T’s radio bands (GSM 850/1900 and WCDMA Bands II/V for 3G) — but how do we know this thing is actually a RAZR? The devil is in the details.

You see, Motorola had to design a brand new battery for the Droid RAZR. As their first Android phone with a non-removable cover, the Droid RAZR’s battery needed to be wider and flatter than those they’d built before. They built this new battery and lovingly dubbed it the “SNN5899A”.

And hey, whatd’ya know: as noted by the guys at WirelessGodness, this mystery handset also happens to use the SNN5899A.

Given the legacy of the original RAZR, it only makes sense to get it on as many carriers as possible. Remember the original RAZR? That thing was on every carrier imaginable. You could have started a wireless carrier in your basement and offered the RAZR by the end of the week. AT&T will obviously avoid using the “Droid” half of the “Droid RAZR” name (Droid = Verizon’s branding), but I’d be surprised to see them drop the other half.

The documents of note can be found here.

Delay! Delay! Screw it, release garbage.), I didn’t think I could ever like another Motorola device again. Guess I was wrong.

I just spent a bit of time with the just-announced Droid RAZR, and, at least at first glance, it is… surprisingly great. Dive in for my first impressions, won’t you?

The First Impressions:

The Samsung-made Super AMOLED screen is, as we’ve grown used to with Samsung’s most recent displays, amazing. The blacks are deep, the color contrast vivid. It’s still not quite as high res as Apple’s retina display, but the difference is a hard one to notice

The overall device aesthetic is… interesting. Not quite my tastes (perhaps because I’m so used to round corners, while the RAZR is intentionally angled), but not at all off putting.

No lag. None whatsoever. Of course, we’re talking about a brand new device here with little bogging it down, and Android as a whole is considerably less laggy than it was a year ago — but try as I might, I couldn’t get any of the transitions or animations to stutter.

New to the Droid RAZR is a feature Motorola calls “Smart Actions”, which allows you to automate certain events based on triggers like location (based on WiFi networks or geofences) and time. Arrive at work? It can change your ringtone away from “Sexy and I Know It” and your wallpaper to someone who is wearing clothes. Back at home? It’ll put things back to your personal tastes, flip off Bluetooth, slow down the processor (to save battery), and up the ringer volume in case the handset slips into the couch. There are third party apps that do similar things, but Motorola’s offering is surprisingly intuitive and seemingly well built.

Slim. Incredibly slim. Even with the chunk of ugly at the top (where the radio/camera are stored), this thing is razor (HAH!) thin.

Though I wasn’t able to get sample shots of the device, I did use the camera. The shutter lag was minimal, and the time between photos was trivial.

My favorite part of the entire device? Oddly, the back. So many manufacturers (I’m looking at you, Samsung), have come to focus all of their efforts on the front of the device. What about the part the world sees while I’m actually using the phone as.. you know, a phone? The Droid RAZR’s back surface is almost entirely Kevlar, which feels remarkably nice in the hand. It’s the texture of soft-touch paint, without the added thickness.

The battery isn’t swappable — which is sort of weird, for an Android device. They sacrificed that option to make the device slimmer.

That’s all for now — but feel free to ask any questions down in the comments below. We’ll try to get our hands on a production device to give this thing a proper review in the coming weeks.

<s>We’ve got a nice demo video or two coming up soon — sadly, the WiFi here appears to be carrier pigeon-based. Check back soon!</s> Update: Now with video!

Their own mysterious video went live earlier today, and hints pretty strongly at some impressive hardware due to be unveiled soon.

As with most teaser videos, Motorola's latest is heavy on imagery but light on detail. In between the images of fast cars and a Douglas Adams reference, Motorola alludes to something faster, thinner, stronger, and smarter ready for a debut on October 18.

As with most teaser videos, Motorola’s latest is heavy on imagery but light on detail. In between the images of fast cars and a Douglas Adams reference, Motorola alludes to something faster, thinner, stronger, and smarter ready for a debut on October 18.

On top of that, Motorola sent out press invites to that event, and Engadget discovered that Motorola’s PR team named the image “spyderlaunchinvite”. I’d say that pretty strongly hints at the existence of the Motorola Spyder, which also made the rounds with the monikers Droid HD and Droid RAZR.

What really gets me here is that there are hints that point to different names, provided you look hard enough. The teaser video quickly flashes a razor blade, which seems like a call-out to the Droid RAZR rumor. It doesn’t help that Motorola (with the help of CSC) has recently picked up a handful of RAZR-related domain names that are about seven years too late to be relevant for the original models.

Then again, the invite should theoretically be the most up to date of all the materials that have made the rounds. It seems pretty unlikely that someone tagged it with the wrong filename, unless Motorola has been sitting on the invite image for longer than we thought.

In any case, it won’t be long before we find out what Motorola is working on. If I may be so bold as to quote West Side Story, “something’s coming — I don’t know what it is but it is gonna be great.”

Not entirely unlike the iPhone today, it was the sleek phone that everyone wanted. But if you happened to be on the largest carrier in the U.S., Verizon, you couldn't get one. Again, sound familiar?

It wasn't until just about a year later that a version (the V3c) finally came to Verizon. It was a long wait, but I was excited to finally have access to the device, I pre-ordered one the first day I could. When I finally got it, there were some surprises in store. Rather than having the same colorful user interface that my friends' RAZRs (on other networks) had, it had some god-awful red proprietary UI made by Verizon itself. It also came with the added bonus of having Bluetooth file transfer capabilities disabled by Verizon. And it was loaded to the brim with Verizon's V CAST garbage.

So while part of the wait was undoubtedly due to Motorola getting a CDMA version of the device ready to sell, a bigger part was likely Verizon negotiating and working to load the device up with their crapware. That doesn't speak well for the supposed Verizon iPhone.

Not entirely unlike the iPhone today, it was the sleek phone that everyone wanted. But if you happened to be on the largest carrier in the U.S., Verizon, you couldn’t get one. Again, sound familiar?

It wasn’t until just about a year later that a version (the V3c) finally came to Verizon. It was a long wait, but I was excited to finally have access to the device, I pre-ordered one the first day I could. When I finally got it, there were some surprises in store. Rather than having the same colorful user interface that my friends’ RAZRs (on other networks) had, it had some god-awful red proprietary UI made by Verizon itself. It also came with the added bonus of having Bluetooth file transfer capabilities disabled by Verizon. And it was loaded to the brim with Verizon’s V CAST garbage.

So while part of the wait was undoubtedly due to Motorola getting a CDMA version of the device ready to sell, a bigger part was likely Verizon negotiating and working to load the device up with their crapware. That doesn’t speak well for the supposed Verizon iPhone.

Rumors of the iPhone coming to Verizon are louder now than they’ve ever been. There is no doubt that Apple has been working on a CDMA version of the device (codename: N92) for some time now, and perhaps is even in the process of manufacturing it as we speak. But whether that device is destined for Verizon or Sprint (the other U.S. CDMA provider) remains to be seen. Undoubtedly, Apple wants their device on the largest carrier in the country (Verizon), but they’ll also undoubtedly will have to make sacrifices to make that happen. And Apple doesn’t like to make sacrifices.

Much has been written about how Apple will probably have to take a lower subsidy from the other U.S. carriers if they move beyond their exclusive deal with AT&T (which gives them an outrageous subsidy that adds billions of dollars to their bottom line). But there’s not a lot of talk about the more fundamental thing Apple may have to give up by putting the device on Verizon: control.

Remember, when Apple first launched the iPhone in 2007, the first carrier they went to talk to about a deal was Verizon. The two sides could not come to an agreement at the time, and the main issue was undoubtedly control. Apple had basically no leverage at the time as they were the new player in the space with zero market share. Verizon knew that and probably laughed at some of Apple’s demands. So Apple went to AT&T, and the rest is history.

Those Apple/Verizon discussions have undoubtedly been had many times since the massively successful launch (and subsequent updated version launches) of the iPhone. Both sides know that it makes sense for the most popular smartphone to be on the most popular network. But the question remains: who is willing to give up something to make that happen?

The past week, I’ve written a number of posts with the same basic refrain: the carriers suck. Each of those posts was in the context of Android, and specifically how the carriers are taking advantage of the openness of that mobile OS to take us back in time 5 years where they had complete control over the U.S. market — the time before the iPhone. Verizon is the worst perpetrator so far. Is there any doubt they want to do the same thing with the iPhone?

Back in 2007, Verizon probably thought Apple’s ideas of an App Store and user experience completely controlled by them but run on Verizon’s network were insulting. If there was going to be an app store, it was going to be a Verizon app store. If there was going to be a new user experience, it was going to be a Verizon new user experience. AT&T probably wanted those things too, but they saw what Apple had done with the iPod and were likely willing to take the chance — provided they got the exclusive on it. No less than Apple CEO Steve Jobs has credited AT&T with having this foresight.

Verizon can no longer laugh at Apple’s ideas, but instead the prospect of the iPhone as it is currently constituted on their network probably scares the hell out of them. Sure, they’d add billions in revenues from new contracts, but they’d essentially be a dumb pipe for this device. As they’ve proven with all of their other devices — including the RAZR and now their Android phones — they don’t want to be that. They want to be in control of not only the network, but at least some of the content on that network.

So now the question in my mind is whether or not Apple is willing to make any concessions to Verizon? Would Apple allow them to include a V CAST app standard on every iPhone, for example? One that couldn’t be deleted? What about apps in the App Store that only work with Verizon iPhones and not AT&T iPhones (just like Skype for Android)? What about interface changes (either software or hardware) that show more prominently that this is a Verizon phone? Or what about a cut of all apps sold and all music/movies/tv show downloaded?

It’s hard to imagine Apple allowing Verizon to do any of that. But they may have to if they want to deal.

All I’m saying is that I’m still not sold on the rumors of an iPhone on Verizon’s network being a slam dunk. It certainly might come, but I suspect Apple will have to make some concessions they would never make in normal circumstances to make it happen.

If they’re not ready to do that just yet, might we see a T-Mobile and Sprint version of the iPhone first? That would certainly give Apple some more leverage by making Verizon the only carrier in the U.S. without the iPhone. And Verizon is probably okay with that right now as they watch Android sales explode and watch their power over that OS — which they can control — expand.

Apple gets a lot of shit for not being as “open” as Android. But as always, things aren’t as black and white as they seem. Verizon’s repurposing of Android is starting to show this very clearly. That level of outside manipulation, wrapped in the faux cloak of “openness”, is something that Apple is never going to allow on a device that they make.

And no matter how badly we all want the Verizon iPhone, we don’t want that.

If people had gotten the Razr in 2005, when it was popular (I swear, every two-bit jerk had one at my school; I pitied them), by the time the iPhone rolled around in 2007, their two-year contract with whatever wireless carrier they had would have been about to expire.
It’s been a few months since the iPhone first graced the world stage and I’ve owned mine since September, entering the fray only after the price drop made it worth picking up. So here we are, holidays upon us, and the iPhone — actually, probably the Touch — promising to be a big seller for the 16-to-95 set. Well, friends, I’m going to make a case against the iPhone. Although I believe it’s a break-through product, it is not, in fact, all that and a bag of chips. Even if the chips were good. What is the iPhone? It’s a PDA disguised as a media device disguised as the second coming of Jeebus. While I own one and use one, there are phones out there that do a better job at everything the iPhone does without complaint. Need email? Get a Blackberry. Need instant messaging? Get a Sidekick. Need an operating system so poorly designed that it causes physical illness? Get anything running Windows Mobile 6. Just rethink your iPhone purchase. Apple is good at a few things. They make icons pop and move like Sugar Ray and can make a photo-realistic icon like nobody else. Sure, we’re big Apple lovers over here at CG, but let’s run down the RAZR spec list and the iPhone spec list and see what this $99 (free with rebate) phone has on the iPhone. Spec RAZR iPhone Winner Coolness Ummm… It can cut you. It’s a RAZR, duh! It’s a robot turd. RAZR Price Free with purchase of a Big Mac $399 Duh Porn Browsing Not so much Oh so much OK. iPhone wins Camera Yeah, with video! For making home-made porn! Sure, if you like still pics. RAZR, again Keyboard Real keys Some weird virtual keyboard RAZR Applications Music player, all that jazz. Even a Calculator! Maybe there will be an SDK at MacWorld but there’s nothing yet.
Until June 29, it’s hard to tell too much about the iPhone, but I can tell you with near-certainty one thing: the product was almost certainly rushed to market before Apple’s engineers would have liked. At MacWorld, Jobs said: “We’re shipping them in June”. Had the phone release date been set in July or August, the entire tech world’s collective red flag would have swung. So they set the release date as June 29 — a Friday, and the last weekday of the month. This, coupled with the fact that Apple has never, in recent memory, released a product on a Friday, should make everybody say “Hmmmm,” and suggests they took a calculated risk of releasing a product that might be a little buggy (probably about as bad as the first run of screen-flickering, case-cracking, motherboard-busted MacBooks), rather than suffer the embarrassment of not keeping their word. Which means that when the iPhone comes, Digg will likely be full of horror stories from the poor saps who camped out at their local AT&T store, only to find their purchase was buggier than a camp cabin. Here’s what we’re predicting will go wrong with the iPhone, and a little about what may go right. CRACKED SCREENS The iPhone is thin — just 11.6mm — and nearly the entire front is made up of the much-heralded touchscreen. That means glass. And, as anybody who has ever tossed a Wiimote knows, glass breaks. So when Mr. Customer gets a shiny new iPhone and sticks it in his back pocket (after all, that’s where he’s kept EVERY phone since the StarTAC), don’t be surprised if he finds that glass screen can’t sustain all 200 pounds of him. Cracked screens will be to the iPhone what scratched backs were to the Nano. THAT “KEYBOARD” That virtual keyboard will be about as useful for tapping out emails and text messages as a rotary phone. Don’t be surprised if a sizable contingent of iPhone buyers express some remorse at ditching their BlackBerry when they spend an extra hour each day pumping out emails on the road. TAKE THAT RAZR! Thank goodness for 3.5mm headphone jacks. If Apple had been stupid enough to include an undersized socket, that alone would be reason enough for many of us to pack a separate music player (which sort of defeats the purpose of having an iPhone, now doesn’t it?) Until June 29, it’s hard to tell too much about the iPhone, but I can tell you with near-certainty one thing: the product was almost certainly rushed to market before Apple’s engineers would have liked.

CRACKED SCREENS

The iPhone is thin — just 11.6mm — and nearly the entire front is made up of the much-heralded touchscreen.

THAT “KEYBOARD”

That virtual keyboard will be about as useful for tapping out emails and text messages as a rotary phone. Don’t be surprised if a sizable contingent of iPhone buyers express some remorse at ditching their BlackBerry when they spend an extra hour each day pumping out emails on the road.

TAKE THAT RAZR!

Thank goodness for 3.5mm headphone jacks. If Apple had been stupid enough to include an undersized socket, that alone would be reason enough for many of us to pack a separate music player (which sort of defeats the purpose of having an iPhone, now doesn’t it?)

SLURP AWAY

And about that WiFi. Chances are it won’t be smiled upon, but the smart money says that you guys find a way to slurp (SHARE) songs with other iPhone users, and chances are they’ll be a lot easier to find than one of those “one million” Zunes in the wild (and certainly won’t be bogged down by songs that expire after a few listens.)

WORST SOFTWARE IDEA EVER

Expect there to be absolutely zero demand for a “Bootcamp Mobile,” which would let insane iPhone users load up Windows Mobile on their iPhone. Please don’t do it, Apple.

A PHONE-LESS iPHONE

What kind of gray market will pop up for contract-less phones? Since AT&T is REQUIRING iPhone purchasers to sign up for 2-year contracts (any lawyers out there know if this is legal?), it isn’t difficult to imagine folks who have no real need for the phone aspect looking for a nice web-browsing widescreen iPod. But boy will they be expensive (probably about $750 new.)

BLANK SCREENS

And now for the number one prediction about problems that will plague the first run of iPhones off the assembly line: battery life. Try watching a movie for more than an hour on a 5G iPod and you’ll know what I’m talking about. Then throw in the battery-sucking demands of WiFi, phone calls, browsing the Web, and backlighting a larger screen than any iPod has ever had.

Here’s hoping my dire predictions come to naught.

It was only a few years ago that virtually every cell phone was identified by a serial number-esque stream of numbers and letters that, while I’m sure they made plenty of sense to a company’s on-hand staff of engineers and marketing pros, were more likely to leave consumers scratching their heads. Hence the rise of the RAZR, the Chocolate, and the Treo—instantly-recognizable brands that bring up images that have been finely crafted through millions of dollars of advertising and marketing muscle. But there’s a logical end to this name game. And it can be summed up quite simply as “more of the same.” It’s amazing it took companies so long to realize how off-putting it is to consumers when a product is called the JF-78XXW or whatever.
Hence the rise of the RAZR, the Chocolate, and the Treo—instantly-recognizable brands that bring up images that have been finely crafted through millions of dollars of advertising and marketing muscle.

But there’s a logical end to this name game. And it can be summed up quite simply as “more of the same.”

It’s amazing it took companies so long to realize how off-putting it is to consumers when a product is called the JF-78XXW or whatever. I mean seriously, most people don’t even know their own Social Security number. It will be a cold day in a Sprint store before somebody walks in and says they need—NEED—the VX-998383F (or whatever). It’s just not how we roll.

Of course, these days it’s standard operating procedure that a hot new cell phone will have a catchy name. Part of this comes from an increasing share of marketing money being spent on specific phones, as opposed to merely Verizon or Cingular as a whole. The whole point of marketing is to leave a product hanging in somebody’s mind. Without a catchy name, this is impossible. But it’s also just simple logic—create a catchy name with a nice image and the money will follow

But beyond that, a cell phone’s name is extraordinarily important to these companies for a simple reason—cell phones are essentially becoming commodity products. A catchy name (and image) is a simple way of differentiating a phone from the slew of other 1.3-megapixel clamshells out there. Cell phone companies are fighting the commodification of their products tooth and nail. If all phones are viewed as identical, it’ll be all-too-easy for no-name Chinese companies to swoop in and steal Motorola’s thunder.

Lets break cell phones into two categories: “hot” phones and “commodity” phones. Hot phones have marketing money, striking designs, cutting-edge features, and real names. Just by looking at a phone’s name, you can tell if it is a commodity phone or not—if it’s name shows up in the dictionary (with or without vowels), it’s hot. Nameless commodity phones essentially fall into the “free with contract” or “I lost my phone and need the cheapest one you have today” territory.

Unfortunately for cell phone manufacturers, it’s inevitable—they will run out of decent names (or at least the low-hanging fruit.) As deep as the Oxford Dictionary is, I would say that there really is an incredibly finite supply of words that work with cell phones. The LG Chair or the Motorola GLV just don’t have that certain je ne sais pas.

So what is going to happen? Are companies sweating bullets and hiring dozens of interns to scour the dictionary for the next hit name? Hardly.

What is more likely is, as has become the case with the RAZR, names will become synonymous with DESIGN above all else. New features will come, the design may even shift a bit, but once a company stumbles onto a hit name-design combination, they will milk it for years. If LG views the Chocolate to be a home-run, they’ll throw a new one out next year with the same name and form factor, but updated features. This will save companies money in marketing (the product will already be well-known) and design (they’ll be able to recycle old molds.)

And, since we’ve essentially reached the end of the thinner-thinner-thinner phone arms race, it should be easier than ever for company’s to get away with reusing old designs.

And for you the consumer? Well, this means that you better get used to seeing the same designs pop up again and again for years and years. Don’t be surprised if cell phone companies fall into what I call the “Hollywood Trap” — that is, they get complacent and stick to what works, refusing to take risks. In this case, the only winners will be the upstarts who see an opportunity to put some interesting designs in people’s pockets. After all, is there anybody who isn’t sick of the RAZR yet?

. According to the manual, the new high-end RAZR utilizes Windows Media 11 and PlaysForSure, meaning your Yahoo! music subscription will work with the phone. The idea of carriers opening up their hardware to music from other services isn’t new, Cingular started the trend way back when with its super-sleek, sexy, slender, desirable ROKR, an iTunes-compatible musicphone. The thing was a STNKR, but it did prove that people wanted music on their phones, but didn’t want to be locked into a second music store. While PlaysForSure is still playing second fiddle to iTunes as far as legit music downloads go, that could change if more carriers and manufacturers start loading their phones up with the non-Apple competitor. PlaysForSure works just like iTunes, the available music is roughly the same, and the quality is just fine. The key, however, is that there are far, far more cellphones than iPods, and if they all worked with the PlaysForSure store of the user’s choice, then it could be the first real threat to iTunes and the iPod.
