The real “winner” of the e-book wars is E Ink, the Mass.-based (it was spun off from a project at MIT) company that develops the technology behind the screens of all the top readers, including the Kindle and nook. If you’re holding a Kindle or a nook, congrats, you’re holding the same core technology: E Ink’s display. The company has announced that its next-generation display, named Pearl, will be available in “Q2.” Pretty sure the second quarter of the year ended yesterday, so I’m going to go ahead and assume that the next new version of the Kindle, nook, etc. will use the new display. My bad: the new Kindle DX has the Pearl display. That’s even better news, yes. → Read More

There are some sweet mobile phones coming out over the next few months and a BGR crony turned up release dates for Best Buy’s hotest upcoming phones. The info comes off of a PowerPoint slide and reveals quite a bit. Coming October 26th: Sprint – Samsung M540 “Rant”, available in black, purple and red Sprint – HTC Touch Pro Verizon – Blitz AT&T – BlackBerry Bold 9000 (date obscured on image) T-Mobile – BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220 Coming November 16th: Verizon – BlackBerry Storm Granted, wireless carries and manufacturers alike tend to push release dates around a bit, but this should give you a general idea when you can use your Best Buy Reward Zone points on one of these new phones. → Read More
If you’ve been just dying to get a BlackBerry 8120 and your favorite color is “Frost”, “Black Emerald”, or “Indigo”, you’re in luck. Come October 15th, T-Mobile will be offering the Pearl 8120 in your hue of choice. Nice to see some color choice added to the line beyond just “Boring Gray”, though two of the three colors are still pretty doom-and-gloom. What’s wrong T-Mo, no love for the neons? Expect the new colors to launch at the same $149.99 after contract rebates and the like. → Read More

[photopress:Tmobile_8120_8820.jpg,full,center] Two Wi-Fi-endabled new Blackberries are coming to T-Mobile in the near future, and they’re pretty awesome. T-Mo’s got a thing for Wi-Fi, mostly for their home service that lets your cellular phone become your home phone. We know people who’ve used the service and love it to death. The 8820 is of the same family as the Curve in the 8800 series and has the same pancake form factor. It also has GPS, EDGE, full QWERTY, and all the other usual Blackberry niceties. The 8120 is a Pearl Blackberry without GPS, but with video capability. Both smartphones have myFaves, with the 8120 available on April 14th and the 8820 available on Monday the 24th of March. Go forth, Blackberry fans, and rejoice. T-Mobile 8820 and 8120 [BGR] → Read More
I find that AT&T’s newest BlackBerry to be quite odd. Maybe I’m crazy, but I thought AT&T loved them some GPS while T-Mobile loved them some Wi-Fi. In any case, AT&T has added the BB Pearl 8120 for about $200 with the usual 2-year contract. It’s the latest and greatest Pearl (2-megapixel camera w/ video) so get ready for some hot 802.11g action, ladies. I was on the plane yesterday and noticed a sarariman sitting next to me with a Pearl. I don’t get it. Why would anyone in business want a QWERTY-less BB? I know it’s small and all that jazz, but anyone want to fill me in? *The old Pearl is pictured above. → Read More
Now we’re talking. Back in July, yours truly did a post on the new AirDrives headphones — you know, the headphones that basically sit on the outside of your ear “eliminating the need to choose between music and social interaction” — and I mused that they might be better positioned as workout headphones. Well, Mad Catz has gone a step in what I believe to be the right direction by offering up an iPhone-friendly headphone/mic combo (also compatible with BlackBerry Curve and Pearl). Any cell phone headset that can let outside noise back in would be nice and safe in the car. Let’s hope Mad Catz releases a universal 2.5mm version too. Cheap? No sir, they’re $99. However, they’re made to be worn all day because they don’t actually go inside your ears. AirDrives(TM) Interactive Earphones for iPhone Now Available [Press Release] → Read More
http://i4.photobucket.com/player.swf?file=http://vid4.photobucket.com/albums/y113/one028/MOV02852.flv My recent switch to a BlackBerry has me compulsively looking for mods and everything cool for my 8320 and this may or may not be newsworthy or even new to some of you, but it’s Sunday and some of you may be bored. I haven’t tried this yet, so I can’t vouch for it, but my Curve does have Wi-Fi and I’ll be testing this out shortly. A recent tutorial on BlackBerry Forums reveals that you, CrackBerry users, can stream Sirius or XM to your BB. The thread starter tried this on a Verizon Pearl and found the original tutorial for the LG Voyager on Howard Forums. There are currently very few commenters so I’m not sure which devices it can or will work on. Being the intrepid bunch that you are, I will assume some of you will try out and leave some feedback. Enjoy your Sunday, folks. BBF [via Gear Diary] → Read More
We loooooove Black Friday. It’s our favorite day of the year. It’s that day after Thanksgiving in the USA when the holiday shopping stuff really ramps up. It’s the day of the amazing door-buster specials and long lines and mall corndogs and tired, cranky sales clerks and cheap HDTVs and Jagermeister. It’s also the day, from what BGR hears, that Crackberry addicts can first get their worn-out fingers on Sprint’s Blackberry Pearl 2. → Read More
You Blackberry Pearl fans are going to get jealous, as we’ve been hearing all morning that its successor, the Blackberry Pearl 2: Electric Boogaloo is nearing production readiness. Don’t get too panicky, though, as the Pearl 2 isn’t that much of an upgrade, and even looks the same. The new Blackberry, known internally with the kodename Komet, takes the exact same form factor and adds modern fun like stereo Bluetooth and a fancy 3.2-Megapixel camera. According to BGR, the camera is side-aligned, like high-end Sony-Ericsson cameraphones. This means it’s likely packing that auto-focus feature, meaning the spy shots of hawt gear you send in to us might look decent. Nice. Also added is an external MicroSD slot, support for DRMed Winodws Media files (uh, yay?), and streaming media support. Oh yah, the tiny phone has WiFi, so you can actually use those multimedia features. We’re not sure yet if it’s using 3G, but even if it doesn’t, the iPhone-like idea of replacing it with free WiFi is interesting. Expect pricing to be at about $250 at launch, dropping to $199 with contract after a couple months, with prices falling until it bottoms out at $50 when every airhead mall chick has one in one of the various colors it will be produced in. Check out the Technicolor rainbow above. What you see could very well be the successor to the popular Blackberry Pearl. BGR received a reliable tip that the 8120 is to replace the Pearl this summer as an updated version. New features include color choices of black, red, titanium, and gold, a 2-megapixel camera (very nice), GPS, and WiFi. Yeah, WiFi. That means you can use IM+ to make free Skype calls from your Blackberry with ease. Rumor has it that T-Mobile will launch the 8120 around September, but nothing has been confirmed yet. Rogers will be launching it in Canada around September. Rockage. BlackBerry 8120 to replace the BlackBerry Pearl? [BGR] → Read More
Merrill Lynch is up to it again with those crazy predictions. Well, maybe this isn’t so crazy, but it’s still noteworthy. Rumor is that come May 7th, Sprint will be getting the Blackberry Pearl and T-Mobile will be getting the 8300. The reasoning behind this speculation? RIM will be reporting its Q1 earnings come April 11th and the May 7th launch date also happens to be RIM’s Capital Markets Day. What does it all mean? It means if you’ve been hankering for a full-QWERTY Blackberry with WiFi on T-Mobile, your prayers have been answered. I suppose it’s cool that Sprint customers are finally getting the Pearl, but it’s so last year. BlackBerry 8300 to T-Mobile & Verizon/Sprint BlackBerry Pearl to Launch May 7th? [BGR] → Read More
T-Mobile is pulling an Apple-esque move and offering the Blackberry Pearl in white this year. The specs are still the same, but instead of a dull, depressing black shell on the outside, you now get a bright and happy sparkling white one. You can snag one for a cool $149 with a two-year contract and they’ll be available in the next week or so. → Read More
has launched on Cingular’s website with something we didn’t know about: Push To Talk. We knew Cingular had plans for PTT, but we didn’t think it would debut with such little fanfare and on such a pedestrian phone. Sure, it’s got 3G, but it’s a cheap-o otherwise. In addition to the CU400, PTT can be enabled on the Pearl, the Moto V365, Samsung D407, and SE Z525a. Until more phones on the network have the service, we don’t see it being very popular, though for a family, the $19.99 plan is actually a fairly good deal. And since this phone is only $29.99 with a 2-year contract, you can probably afford to outfit your whole clan with 3G goodness. Unless you’re old-school Mormon, that would just cost a fortune. I reported Tuesday that the BlackBerry Pearl had a prelaunch status on the Cingular site. Well the sexy BlackBerry candybar is now available to the masses. It carries a $199.99 price with a two year contract. You can get it online now. Or if you prefer brick-and-mortar, a limited but expanding number of retail stores will be carrying the Pearl. Good luck finding one though. Also announced is that the Pearl will support Cingular’s TeleNav GPS. The TeleNav system allows for the routing of 10 trips per month for a fee of $5.99 or $9.99 for unlimited trips. Possibly useful in a pinch, but definitely not as good as something like the Helio Drift. Product Page → Read More
Previously limited only to T-Mobile, the BlackBerry Pearl will soon rear its head on that other GSM provider, Cingular. The fancy pants Pearl is the first candybar from BlackBerry. It features all the features you’ve come to love from BB, in a sexy phone body. I’ve played around with a couple of them so far and I’m definitely a fan. The camera side of the phone looks particularly attractive. → Read More
