RealD has officially given the Oakley 3D glasses its nod of approval. The certification states that the Oakley 3D glasses will “complement and optimize the 3D entertainment experience for audiences all over the globe.” This is no doubt important to the dozen people who bought the 3D glasses for use in exclusively in the theater. Everyone else that simply jumped 3D fashion bandwagon probably are about as thrilled as Ken Jennings who lost to a human and a machine on Jeopardy last night.

Oakley and TRON, sitting in a tree, marketing synergistically. Oakley is “selling” $150 limited edition 3D glasses that are going to make your TRON:Legacy experience just about as amazing as it can be. That’s right: these are basically expensive versions of those cheap glasses you get at the theatre.

Presumably the only time we’ll ever see these is when the stars wear them to the premiere on December 17 but it should be a fun cross-marketing opportunity. Presumably you could wear these again to upcoming Pixar films and maybe take it to Avatar 2 when it comes out in 2040.

The idea of baconish accessories has my approval, but why would you want the bacon look without the accompanying bacon smell, or authentic bacon crackle? When they come out with a pair of Oakleys that have an aroma unit and built-in speakers, you let me know.

There’s only one other surf-forecasting app, GreenRoom Surf Forecasts, available today and it costs $2.99. It’s limited to spots in California, but you can get a seven-day forecast whereas Surf Report only provides up to three days. However, Oakley’s app is free and you can’t beat that.

I’ve never actually seen anyone wear Oakley’s MP3 sunglasses in person. I’ve seen athletes wear them and I think Dog the Bounty Hunter wore them, but he’s been taken off the small screen for his racist remarks so he doesn’t count anymore. I think it’s a good idea, but why? Not everyone can pull off these sunglasses because they simply won’t fit your face properly. I guess there’s enough demand for Oakley to redesign these things.

The Split Thump are different from previous models with built-in controls that are cleverly hidden beneath the logo and the earbuds are removable so as not to look like a jackass when you’re clearly not listening to music. It’s sort of like the douchebags who wear their Bluetooth headsets 24/7 when everyone and their mother knows they’re not taking a call. The Split Thump will come in 512MB ($249), 1GB ($299), and 2GB ($399) models in black and white with varying colored lenses. No word on when they’ll be available for sale.

Hand crafted in jewelery quality 18K solid gold by prestigious jeweler Michael Dickey, this rendering features gold iridium tint lenses signed by Lance Armstrong and is one of only two in existence. The unique sculpture replicates the frame design worn by Armstrong in seven Tour de France championship victories.

As the group makes their final sprint down the Champs-Elysees on Sunday, July 29th, the auction will close at 17:26 CEST (5:26pm Paris time).

All proceeds will go directly to the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

Oakley and Motorola tag-teamed for this case of misguided digital/optical convergence. Even with all of their practical shortcomings aside (imagine the decision you have to make when driving at night: do I keep my sunglasses on and drive nearly-blind, or risk getting a ticket for holding my phone?), these things are just plain hideous. These look like something a 7-year-old boy would think looks “cool”, and basically scream “I demand attention!”

Thump Pro is designed for athletes and performance-demanding individuals, who need consistent, clear vision at all times. They come with solid-state memory from 256MB to 1GB and can play iTunes AAC, MP3, WMA, DRM’d WMA, WAV, and MP3 music formats. Be prepared to dish out $249 for the 256MB pair and up to $349 for the 1GB pair. But how do they look? Better than previous Thump models, but they’re still pretty NASCAR.
