Giant-fingered technology enthusiasts, lift up your hearts! Magellan has a 7-inch GPS system on the way: the $299 RoadMate 1700. The touchscreen has a resolution of 800×480 and there’s a video input jack so you can hook up your iPod or DVD player. Sounds safe!

Other features include preloaded maps of the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico, microSD expansion slot, spoken street names, and “highway lane assistance.” Other than that, there’s not much more in the way of details but apparently the thing’s going to be shown off at a media event tonight in New York, so maybe we’ll find out more then (unless you just don’t care).

The company press release says that it’s available now, although it’s no where to be found. Amazon’s got it on pre-order with an October 10th shipping date, though, so let’s stick with that for now. As press releases go, I’d give this one a C- due to lack of information and/or misinformation. You don’t grade press releases, though. It’s not like school.

Can’t find your way out of a paper bag? Poke a hole in said bag with your finger and then tear it open and step out. Simps, done.

Can’t find your way around town? You can get a refurbished Magellan GPS unit for $50 with free shipping, which is a good price since the entire GPS infrastructure is apparently about to crumble in the next year or so. You don’t want to sink too much money into a GPS system, if that’s the case.

Wild, rampant, sensational news aside, the Magellan Maestro 3140 GPS unit features a 3.5-inch touchscreen, SiRF Star III chipset, text-to-speech turn-by-turn directions, Bluetooth, AAA travel data, and maps of all 50 states and Puerto Rico.

It’s been refurbished by, and carries a warranty from, Magellan although the warranty period isn’t specified. I’d guess it’s 90 days, though, as is customary with most refurbished GPS units.

Ah, Black Friday. After working at Circuit City from 2000 to 2006, I don’t care how good the deals are, I’m sleeping in that day. This year is shaping up nicely though if the $99 GPS and $149 Blu-ray player rumors are true. Reportable, the GPS units are going to be top tier units from Garmin, TomTom, or Magellan and the Blu-ray player should be the Samsung BDP-1500. Still, I don’t care how cheap I can get a gizmo or widget, there is no way in hell its worth getting up at 3:00 A.M, only to wait outside in Michigan’s freezing November temperatures; my mother-in-law disagrees though.

I’ve always been good with direction and I’ve never seen the point of owning a GPS. As tedious as it is to jump on the computer and check out GooMaps for directions before taking off on my adventures, it is cheap and relatively free. I don’t even bother printing out directions, I just write them down. But the Magellan Triton series is certainly changing my mind. I’m still anti-convergence anything these days, but these are just too good to pass up. The Triton line consists of six models which feature full-color touchscreens, barometers, 2-megapixel cameras and an LED flashlight. Magellan has scored a first in the GPS world with the acquisition of maps from National Geographic. Like whoa! The pinnacle of the Triton series is the 2000 and it boasts the aforementioned features as well as a 2.7-inch QVGA screen, an SD card slot, and a speaker/microphone combo. The 2000 is a mere $499 considering all the amenities it comes with. The Triton 500 is half the price of the 2000 and has basically half the features. The screen is downgraded to 2.2-inches and lacks the 2-megapixel camera and flashlight. The budget 200 loses the barometer and SD card slot and power is provided by two AA batteries. Not a bad deal for only $129. The entire line of Tritons will ship to the US in September. Triton 1500 $400 * 2.7-inch QVGA color touch screen * built-in base maps * uploadable maps using VantagePoint software * SD card slot * speaker and microphone * flashlight * waterproof to IPX-7 standards Triton 500 $250 * more compact-sized * 2.2-inch QVGA color screen * SD card slot * uploadable maps using VantagePoint software * built-in base maps * electronic compass and barometer * waterproof to IPX-7 standards Triton 400 $200 * 2.2-inch QVGA color screen * SD card slot * built-in base maps * pointer and compass screen * waterproof to IPX-7 standards * uploadable maps using VantagePoint software Triton 300 $150 * 2.2-inch QVGA color screen * built-in base maps * waterproof to IPX-7 design * pointer and compass screen * uploadable maps using VantagePoint software * 10 MB of memory for map storage Triton 200 $130 * 2.2-inch QVGA color screen * built-in base maps * waterproof to IPX-7 design * pointer and compass screen * runs on two AA batteries Magellan is back with Triton [Navigadget]
