With all the talk of Playbooks and TouchPads these days, it’s sad that poor old LG hasn’t had much traction with their 10-inch G-Slate aka The Optimus Pad.
Well how’s this for traction? This bit of fanfic shows the Optimus Pad fighting, Michael Bay-style, high over a futuristic cityscape. While we all know Honeycomb is going to be amazing, did you know it could shoot fire and lasers? → Read More
What exciting times we live in, what with word that Sony has plans to subpoena a boatload of Web sites and individuals in an attempt to track down the members of fail0verflow and other PS3 hackers. Good luck with that. But wait, what’s this? Now LG wants to ban the sale of PS3s here in the US of A because of a patent dispute? In the words of Scott Hall, two sweet! → Read More
Mobile World Congress — that big convention in Barcelona where a mountain of new phones get announced each year — is still over a week away, but the details are already starting to trickle out. After a little retailer slip-up and some leaks started pulling back the veil on the device earlier this week, LG went ahead and confirmed that they’d be using the show as the launch pad for their new Android flagship (with Glasses-free 3D!), the Optimus 3D.
Just a few minutes ago, LG released the teaser video (after the jump) talking up their Mobile World Congress announcement. Guess who makes an appearance? → Read More
We all know LG hates bezels. Or loves thin bezels. One of those things. At any rate they are eliminating the thick bezels we all have on our TVs and monitors and replacing them with thinner ones.
I love the trend, personally, but it takes more than a thin bezel to make a decent display. What else have you got, LG? → Read More
Just last week, Dutch retailer ThePhoneHouse jumped the gun and put up a listing for the thus-far unannounced LG Optimus 3D. The bad news? Outside of the name (specifically, the “3D” bit in the name), there wasn’t much to be learned — they didn’t put up specs, and they didn’t put up any pictures.
Of course, a leaked name is often enough to get the leak-train rollin’ — and a-rollin’ it is. See that Droid X-lookin’ thing over there? That is, according to the good ol’ rumor mill, none other than the Optimus 3D. → Read More
Yesterday afternoon, an LG Optimus 2X finished the last leg of its rigorous journey from a South Korean factory to my front porch in California. As the first Android smartphone (and the first smartphone of any platform, really) to make it into the wild with a dual-core Tegra 2 processor, it is — for the time being at least — the most powerful Android phone in the world. We’ll have our full review up in just a few days, but in the mean time I figured you guys might enjoy this footage I shot earlier this morning comparing the 1080p video recording of the LG Optimus 2X to that of the iPhone 4. Check it out after the jump. → Read More
You hear that thumping? That’s my heart a-pitter-patterin’ over just what got dropped off at MobileCrunch HQ: the world’s first dual-core smartphone, the LG Optimus 2X. It’ll be a few days before I’ve had enough time with this device to weigh in with our official review — but in the mean time, enjoy our humble gallery of hands-on stills below. Let me know if you have any questions about this one, won’t you? → Read More
Wowza. After the news that LG was pushing Optimus Ones off the shelf at a rate of around a million handsets per month, I sort of just assumed they were having a good quarter, financially. Not so much, it turns out. In fact, Q4 was pretty much their worst quarter in recent history. → Read More
So apparently there’s a bit of a rumor going around that T-Mobile’s G-Slate, which had the honor of introducing us to Honeycomb, will actually have an autostereoscopic 3D screen. The evidence: GPSandCo got word from LG that the thing would both take and display 3D images glasses-free. → Read More
After two years, LGE and Vizio have settled their differences over patent-infringement disputes in both the US and Taiwan. This legal battle had to do with their flat-panel TVs, but terms weren’t disclosed as to what and how it was settled. But the settlement did end in a licensing agreement “that will resolve all outstanding patent disputes and related actions.” → Read More
The LG G-Slate was one of the many tablets outed at CES 2011 that caused many to simply say, “eh.” Just another tablet, right? Sure, but this might be the T-Mobile tablet so fans of the network should probably jump over to this just-launched promo page to sign up for the latest product news. (and spam) → Read More
It seems, at least at first blush, that we are out of the slimy gullet and into the potentially less dangerous teeth of this recession. Joblessness is still high but folks I know who are working in IT and CS are in high demand. People are hiring, but not out in the open, and shoppers, as evidenced by this year’s holiday season, have a little bit of cash. But CE manufacturers, back in 2008, pulled into their turtle shells and haven’t come out. The past few years have passed in a slothful haze and I’m worried that 2011 will be another year of negative innovation.
Consider what happened this year: we saw a load of Android phones, we saw an iPad and a new iPhone, and saw some tablets. That’s it. 3D TV was a flop, most other product lines saw little or no improvement, and generally CE industry sat this year out. CES, if all portents can be believed, will be a bust as well.
People ask me every year what my favorite gadget is. That’s almost impossible to answer. Sadly, for me, it’s like asking a proctologist about his favorite patient: they all sort of blend together and none of the experiences are very nice. So what is my favorite gadget? The gadget that truly stood out?
It’s the freaking Parrot AR.Drone. That’s right. A toy. Here’s why, and here’s what manufacturers can take away from this toy. → Read More
Say you’re buying a TV – any TV, really – and you’re not quite sure what you’re doing. Say you’re in a store and the sales guy says “Well, you want this to be a Smart TV, right?” and you, not knowing any better, agree. Then he upsells this dumb LG box that simply adds LG’s Smart TV offerings including LG’s apps and some DLNA support. And you go home and realize that it’s just a dumbed-down Roku, Western Digital, or Seagate box. Heck, it’s even worse than Apple TV and the new one, barring the obvious hacked value, is pretty boring and is still better than this. You’ve been played. → Read More
In the electronics industry, it often seems like everyone is pretty much suing everyone over something, somewhere.
This morning, I caught that Sony Corporation has apparently filed suit against LG Electronics (right before CES, no less).
LG Electronics is the division of the LG conglomerate that markets and distributes the group’s home entertainment devices (TVs, Blu-ray disc players, DVD recorders and whatnot) as well as its mobile phones and home appliances. → Read More
LG’s notorious obsession with having thin bezels is well known, and they are continuing that vein with their new Xnote P210, a notebook computer with a 12.5 inch screen. The other features don’t necessarily stand out as much, but at least they are trying. → Read More
Yesterday we heard LG would be showing off the world’s largest (for now) 3D LED TV, and today they tell us they’ve got a 3D TV coming, the LW6500, that doesn’t use active-shutter LCD glasses (thank god). I’m beginning to feel used as a blogger — they’re clearly trickling information out for maximum effectiveness. So to spite them, I’m going to write very little here other than that I think passive/polarized 3D is way superior to active-LCD, and they’re on the right track. We’ll get a hands-on at CES, don’t you worry. → Read More
Although the specs on this LG HDTV pretty much put it at the head of its class (72 inches, 3D-ready, local-dimming LEDs, 400Hz (barf), in-TV access to local and remote content), I just don’t like the look. Am I crazy? I just think it’s kind of gaudy-looking. I think I’m more of a thin-bezel wall-mount kind of guy. That little crystal base isn’t doing it for me. They’ll be showing off the LZ9700 at CES, though, so we’ll get a better look then at what they’re claiming is the word’s biggest something or other. Every device out there now is the world’s somethingest these days. → Read More
LG may be seeing a lot of press with the likes of the B, 2x, and budget powerhouse Optimus phones, but apparently that’s not good enough for them. They need more. More! → Read More
Wuh oh! Looks like LG just fired the starter pistol for the trend that’ll almost undoubtedly rule 2011: phones with dual-core processors. Claiming the title as the world’s first dual-core smartphone: the Android-powered LG Optimus 2X. Now, at this point this thing is about as secret as Julian Assange’s hair color — but up until now, it was known by its internal name: the “Star”. Ready for a spec-fest? Peek behind the jump for the full details. → Read More
Virtualization. There are few words quite as able to make a geek’s heart all a-flutter. Teaming it up with a smartphone? Man, you gonna give a geek a cardiac arrest!
LG have now teamed up with VMware to help bring virtualization to the smartphone world.
But why? Well, it’s purely for the enterprise geeks.
Having to carry two phones around is a pain in the ash, but the requirements of enterprise phones are usually so specific (and restrictive) that you can’t really use your personal phone as a work phone. What’s the solution? Put a seperate work phone inside your personal phone using the magic of virtualization. → Read More
