A few things went unannounced during Nintendo’s GDC keynote this morning and the biggest news on the DSi front is the confirmation of 1000 free DSi points if you purchase the third generation DS within the first six months of launch. That’s quite a bit of free swag considering DSiWare games and apps will be divvied up into four price tiers: free, 200 points, 500 points and 800+ points. The DSi point to $ ratio is 100 to 1, so 1000 points is a considerable amount of free booty. So be sure to pick up your DSi between April 5th and October 5th if you want to cash in. → Read More
Wouldn’t it be rad if Nintendo announced Virtual Console for the DSi at GDC this week? We’re unsure if this will actually happen this week, but there’s a rumor going around the web that this was mentioned last night at an event for Club Nintendo members. If true, you’ll be able to download classics from the Gameboy and Gameboy Advance era, but they’ll be limited to first-party titles. And I doubt anyone will have issues with that. Games can be saved onto SD cards on the new DSi in capacities larger than 2GB.

Last year, Microsoft Games head Shane Kim suggested that once sales numbers for consoles started approaching 100 million, then we could declare a winner. That Wiinner is all but declared, and the continuing strong sales of the DS only cement that victory. Not much more to say here, but 100 million really is a pretty insane landmark. Nintendo today in Japan announced three new colors for the DSi [JP]: Pink, lime green and metallic blue. The new handhelds will be sold in Japan from March 20 and cost ¥18,900 ($196), just like the regular models in black and white. → Read More

According to the latest Internet rumor, American gamers will be able to get their hands on the Nintendo DSi on April 4th for $179. Flickr’d Nintendo’s printing factory continues unabated! More than 500,000 DSi’s were sold last month in Japan, its first month of availability (the DSi won’t come out in North America or Europe till the first half of 2009), which suggests that gamers there are still enamored with the device. The exact number of DSi’s sold was 535,379, from November 1 to November 30. Add in the number of DS’s sold, including the DS Lite and original DS—note that the DSi doesn’t play GameBoy Advance games—and the total climbs to 24.2 million units. You know the drill. A hot new gadget launches and someone – most often a nerd-type – tears it apart for some circuit board pr0n. Hey, we can’t blame ‘em and the next up in this age-old ritual is the Nintendo DSi. The new handheld just launched to an eager Japanese gaming crowd last week, selling over 200,000 in the first few days alone. Chances are one of those units is what we are looking at here as the gaming system doesn’t launch in the States until next summer. Anyway, nothing to ground breaking here but the deconstructor does note that the CPU seems a tad more beefy which could be the reason for the shorter battery life. Nintendo is looking to cash-in with early holiday sales by launching the DSi in Japan tomorrow, November 1, 2008. The tech giant still hasn’t announced a US release date but at least narrowed the launch down to the summer season. Japanese gamers can pick up their DSi tomorrow though for ¥18,900 ($192 USD). Supposable, Nintendo has shipped 200,000 gaming handhelds to Japanese markets and has plans to ship 100,000 more by November 4. Remember anxious US gamers, if you cure your itch and import one of these gaming systems before the US launch, the new DSi software is region locked so you will have to import the new games too; your standard DS games will work fine however. → Read More
